It's a visualization of correlation of playing time between different players. If you want to know how often one player is on the floor with another player, you can use this to quickly see. For example, Lee and Ellis are on the floor together a lot (dark red), but Biedrins and Udoh are hardly ever on the floor together (white). Players that are often on the floor together (i.e. units) can be seen in 3x3, 4x4, or 5x5 squares of red.
