I'm going to get straight and to the point on this one...Oakland Native Damian Lillard was in the building this past Sunday working out privately with the Warriors. Some people would think "Oh, he's coming to workout as usually!" but us who understand the draft process would wonder "Why is he working out by himself?". I think the Warriors have a forreal interest in this Native point guard especially with Steph Curry & his glass ankles hitting restricted free agency. Now lets take a look at how Lillard measured out at the draft combine:
Damian Lillard (PG) - 6'3, 190lbs
| Height w/o Shoes | Height w/shoes | Weight | Wingspan | Standing Reach | Body Fat | No Step Vert | Max Vert | Bench Press | Lane Agility | 3/4 Court Sprint | Class Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6' 1.75" | 6' 2.75" | 189 | 6' 7.75" | 7' 11.5" | 5.9 | 34.5 | 39.5 | 13 | 11.15 | 3.34 | NA |
He tested out beyond average for a point guard which at a basically remarkable level. Here is a guard I would seriously compare him to in terms of measurements, play style, and demeanor:
Derrick Rose (PG) - 6'3, 195lbs
| Height w/o Shoes | Height w/shoes | Weight | Wingspan | Standing Reach | Body Fat | No Step Vert | Max Vert | Bench Press | Lane Agility | 3/4 Court Sprint | Class Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6' 1.5" | 6' 2.5" | 196 | 6' 8" | 8' 2.5" | 4.6 | 34.5 | 40.0 | 10 | 11.69 | 3.05 | NA |
Some of you are probably wondering why in the world am I comparing him to a 3x All-Star who was the youngest MVP in league history but lets be honest. If anyone has seen Lillard play he is basically a Bay Area version of Derrick Rose. He is crafty, athletic, and his demeanor is so calm and smooth that he lets his game speak for himself. If we do not draft a small forward or big, we must draft him if he's available. This is my reasoning:
1) He's said openly that he would not mind playing here EVEN THOUGH we already have Steph Curry on our roster. That is a huge bonus for us because that means he's willing to come off the bench and help us win games OR take that starting spot away from Curry and win us games. Either way, he's all about team first and that is the kind of player we need on our roster. (Lets not forget we still cannot trust Curry's ankle.)
2) This team needs athleticism in any way, shape, or form and with this guy he can be our athletic anchor that is willing to attack the lane and can easily fix one part of this team we need help in: SLASHERS.
3) He is a point guard. He's not a scoring guard that is being groomed into running plays for us (I.E. Monta Ellis & Stephen Curry) and he wants to get teammates involved. He even said in the interview that he wish he had gotten his teammates more easier looks despite key injuries taking place to his more talented teammates. We need someone like him who wants to get his teammates involved and won't settle for ISOs all night.
4) He's experienced. He spent 3 1/4 years playing college basketball (medical red-shirt in his 3rd year) and not only that he is still around the same age as most guys projected to go in the lottery. So he's experienced with still alot of upside with room to grow.
5) He's from the Bay Area! Not only does this guy want to be here! He's from here! I know we tried this a few years ago before all the Linsanity but forget that now because I think Lillard will have a much better career if placed in the right situation. Not only will drafting Lillard be a great chance of stepping this organization into the right direction, but this will make this team much more marketable. I mean honestly, people were cheering on Lin every time he stepped on the court and he wasn't even a known commodity so imagine what could happen for Lillard.
6) If Lillard works out and Curry's ankle proves that it is "stable" we have a problem we have not had in a while. We will actually be stacked at a position! We will have trade bait!
I say give this guy great consideration.
