Okay, this whole free agency period I've been cheering the Lakers on to sign Brandon Rush to their 3 mil exception. I was satisfied with no rumors circling around him and other teams, thinking his fantastic season had flown under the radar. When the other free agent 2's began to thin out as they signed, it became apparent Rush did not in fact fly under the radar. When Courtney Lee was S&T'd to the Celtics, I officially became slightly concerned. The Minnesota Timberwolves have a need for a backup 2 and seem to at least be considering Rush as their man.
As the T'wolves demonstrated with Nicolas Batum, they A) aren't afraid of that little 'R' in front of 'FA', and B) aren't afraid to invest some serious dinero into potential alone. The Warriors have seemed tentative to add any contracts that go into the 2014 offseason, when Goose and Richard Jefferson expire together. I wonder if they consider Rush important enough to invest some of that moolah in him. The Wolves not only have more money than us right now (that 12+ mil they were offering Batum is still free space), they could potentially poison pill the contract so it spikes in that 2014 offseason. I doubt they would sign him for more than 7 million, so they could backload the contract to make it even less likely we match.
So I ask you: what should our threat level be at currently? I'm sorry, but Brandon Roy is a serious question mark. Knees don't magically repair themselves. The Wolves have got to be looking at that 2 guard spot and seeing upwards to 30-40 games next season without Roy, so don't it's definitely a position of need. Do they backload the contract to make us hesitant to match? Is there even any other 2's left in this FA pool?
