Warriors vs. Knicks: Postgame Interviews (3/11/13) by Warriors
Mark Jackson
On tonight's game:
“At the end of the day, that’s a heck of a defensive night. I don’t know how many teams in history have nights like that. It takes a combination of great defense and at times bad offense. I wish we could take the credit, but it’s a combination. We’ve played that kind of defense and they made shots. At the end of the day, I think its closer to who we truly are. It’s a great way to stop the bleeding.”
On what clicked tonight for them:
“We made it click. We executed, we defended we rebounded the basketball – they hurt us in New York with Tyson Chandler dominating the paint and we kept a body on him. We were very unselfish and we played our brand of basketball. At the end of the day, I tell my team ‘That’s who we are’ and we are well aware of it and now let’s continue to build on it. Get used to us because we are not going anywhere. I read the notes and listen to the statements and all of that – we are going to be here.”
On Stephen Curry:
“Players are going to get their shots especially when you’re setting screens. He’s a guy, especially a point guard that has the ball in his hands, that pushes the ball in transition – so he’ll get looks. Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith are going to get their shots. The guys that are scorers are going to get their looks, you just have to play good defense. We talked about what adjustment they would make after he had a big night in New York, not much you can do. The guy is a heck of a basketball player and a tough matchup for anybody.”
On defending Carmelo Anthony:
“Again, great defense both individually and collectively. We didn’t want to allow him to take over the basketball game so we gave him different looks, minimized his touches and got help early and often. He’s a heck of a basketball player. You can play that same type of defense and he can go for 40 – we’ve seen it. Very proud of the way my guys competed and paid attention to detail.”
On Klay Thompson:
“I thought Klay (Thompson) did an outstanding job, but he’s been an outstanding defender pretty much all year for us. There are times where he guards their best perimeter guy. He steps up to the challenge and I thought he was locked in from the opening jump.”
Stephen Curry
On winning handedly:
“It didn’t matter how we got it, we just needed to win. I mean, you lose two games in a row against teams that we matched up well against and we didn’t get it done, so this win was important for us.”
On if he expected to win this way after their last meeting in New York:
“This is the way we expect to win every night. Not necessarily by 20 plus, but just playing sound basketball. On the offensive end guys were moving and getting open looks, that’s Warriors basketball and what we said at the beginning of the season. Now we need to get a little more consistent and we have a shot to do that with the next few home games.”
On if he was surprised that they had open looks in the first quarter:
“They had (Carmelo Anthony) on (David) Lee and were worried about him in the post. A couple ball screens caught them by surprise in transition and I got a swing from D. Lee after they had the trap in the post. He made a great play swinging it into the corner, it’s got to be surprising after the other game to get open looks. Everybody talked about a 54-point game before, but after that you just forget about your shot and it’s just one of those things where early on you stay aggressive.”
On Utah and Houston both losing tonight:
"You pay a little attention to it but you can’t hope for other teams to lose or anything. You need to take care of business with the teams you play and make your own destiny. We can’t depend on anybody, we have to climb as high as we can."
On if the team is back to where it was prior to the losing streak:
"We still have some room to grow. We’re not there yet, but thankfully we have this home stand. We’re not there yet but tonight was a big step."
David Lee
On how his knee feels:
“Not the greatest but I was able to come out and fight through it tonight. I didn’t get to play against these guys in New York so I had to make up for it tonight.”
On how watching the last game dictated what he wanted to do tonight:
“Well I really thought in the last 15 to 20 games we haven’t quite had that same energy. Every team goes through it, I thought especially tonight defensively we were flying around challenging shooters. We didn’t let them have that many easy buckets, we didn’t let them have a transition, and when we do that and share the ball we’re a pretty good team.”
On the sense in the locker room before the game:
“Just that it’s a big game. This is a very good team that we just played and it was a big game for us tonight. Every game for us is going to get more and more important as we go along in the playoff race we’re in. We’re just worried about taking care of business and we did that tonight.”
On the Knicks:
“I think it’s tough because it’s their first night in a long road trip, they’re a much better shooting team than they displayed tonight. It shows we can shut teams down, that we can fly around and make plays, and it all started with our energy tonight. If we can display that kind of energy we can be a very good team going forward.”
On what the team has to do to win down the stretch:
“Defense, rebound the basketball, and playing unselfish on offense. We do those three things we said from the start of the year we can be really good, if not then we’re just an average team.”
Festus Ezeli
On the team:
“We’re getting back to us, we’re getting back to having fun again, we’re getting back to who we are as far as putting pressures on ourselves.”
On why the team won:
“We just got back to us, playing how we want to play again, and that was the result.”
On if the team felt pressure to win:
“Maybe just a little tight because we were worried about what people were saying, that’s just me speaking personally. Now we don’t have to worry about anyone, just worry about ourselves and how we’re playing. We know we can do what we want to. Basketball is supposed to be fun, and we’ve played as a fun, loose team this year.”

gswscribe: Warriors fans, Dominic McGuire is not coming through that door. And guess who you should blame? GSW did not sign...
McGuire, the defensive specialist who became a fan favorite with the Warriors last season, because he would probably end up taking minutes from Draymond Green, a source said.
The Warriors let McGuire walk this summer largely because they believed Green could bring what McGuire did, plus more rebounding. But while it is clear Golden State could use someone with the athleticism and defensive acumen of Green, it's not worth taking away from the development of the Warriors young small forward.
So the Warriors opted to fill their whole at third string power forward -- hence the signing of Malcolm Thomas from the D-League. Golden State doesn't have a legitimate PF behind David Lee and Carl Landry, so Thomas is an insurance policy.
Make no mistake, this is Mark Jackson's call. Management gave Jackson (who coached McGuire last season) veto power since he will have to blend in whoever they sign. And he is not a fan of McGuire taking minutes away from his rookie. The Warriors could still sign McGuire, who is a free agent. He was not on a roster by the playoff eligibility deadline, So Golden State can sign him at any point and he'd be available for the playoffs.

What's next?
- Homestand 3-2. Here comes another team that we should beat with our eyes closed. So you know that means it'll go down to the wire.
