Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs preview and game thread

The Warriors will need big games from both Bogut and Curry tonight. - Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The Golden State Warriors, winners of four out of their last five games, head into San Antonio to take on the streaking Spurs. What else is new?

Screw stats and matchups.

Only one matters tonight:

The Warriors haven't won in San Antonio since 1997, spanning 28 games. So if the Warriors played a third of their games on the road against San Antonio to start a season, they'd be winless. Good times.

That's the irrational way of looking at things. The logical me states that Andrew Bogut and Stephen Curry didn't play in a majority of those games, and this year's team is a lot different from last year's. And the year before that, and so on.

The Warriors have had a couple "statement" games this season. Games where they give everything to try and validate the success they've had while the opposing team treats the game as if it's like any other. They beat the Miami Heat on the tail end of a historic road trip. They beat the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder back to back after losing three in a row. And they just handed the Houston Rockets a good old-fashioned whooping.

However, the Spurs are different. They are a well-oiled perfectly constructed machine with zero regard for aging mechanisms and "injury" problems. No Tim Duncan? Here comes Boris Diaw and Tiago Splitter. No Tony Parker? In comes Cory Joseph (from the D-League) and Patty Mills. No San Antonio Spurs? In comes the Austin Toros and they'd win 55 games a year.

Perhaps that's a bit of an overstatement.

It is in that notion that the Warriors franchise strive to develop players, manage assets, and play the way the Spurs do. WIth the D-League of the Warriors—working as a farm system—on the come up, young players like Curry, Klay Thompson, and Harrison Barnes creating an intriguing core, the Warriors are starting off on the right foot. They may never get there, but how many teams actually do?

Tonight, they have the chance to face off against the prototypical model of a franchise in San Antonio, and knock them down a notch.

Here's hoping Andrew Bogut can actually fly tonight.

This is the preview as well as the game thread. Comment judiciously...or not.
