NBA Free Agency rumors: Dwight Howard to make his decision Friday, Carl Landry draws interest from six teams, Brian Scalabrine to join Warriors coaching staff

USA TODAY Sports

After hearing from all the teams on his short list, it's decision time for Dwight Howard.

Let the record show that the first move the Golden State Warriors made in the 2013 free agency moratorium period wasn't getting a commitment from Dwight Howard or re-signing Jarrett Jack or Carl Landry.

It will very likely be bringing Brian Scalabrine on as an assistant coach.

But first, let's review yesterday's actual free agent developments.

Dwight Howard will make his decision Friday: Warriors fans probably shouldn't be waiting anxiously for Howard's decision at this point - it's quite clear that other teams are the more likely landing spots. Zach Harper of CBS Sports rated the Warriors third in his Dwight Howard power rankings yesterday and that's probably the most optimistic perspective out there. But whether it's the Warriors or someone else, Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that Howard will be retreating to either Colorado or Montana and that it could be announced via social media: "Twitter is believed to be one option, but given Howard's personality and camera presence, my money's on a tweet linking to a YouTube video." Fun.

Anyway, most ridiculous pitch for Howard: the Dallas Police Department saying publicly that they're safer than Houston. To recap, what incentives are at stake for Howard: if he picks Dallas, he'll get chicken fingers for life and safety, L.A. will get him a T.V. show, Atlanta is home, and Houston can offer close proximity to Hakeem Olajuwon. Not sure if playing for a preacher trumps any of that.

Josh Smith's fortunes still being linked to Howard's: Even before free agency, people assumed Josh Smith's fate would be linked to Howard's, whether it be teams waiting for the Howard situation to pan out or going somewhere with Howard. But the Houston Rockets, perhaps showing that they feel they're the front-runners for Howard, are already taking steps to bring in Smith specifically to play with Howard.

Six teams interested in Carl Landry: The Clippers met with Carl Landry yesterday and are apparently one of six teams interested, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN. The teams are Indiana, Denver, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Cleveland in addition to Golden State. Two teams that weren't mentioned that were rumored to have interest in Landry are Milwaukee and Portland. Regardless of specifics, we apparently have a long way to go before resolving that one.

The Andre Iguodala saga got interesting: To keep a long(er) story short, the Kings offered Andre Iguodala a four-year, $52 million dollar offer but when he didn't agree right away they pulled it, according to Sam Amick of USA Today. Reactions:

The Warriors were one of the teams to meet with Iguodala in Los Angeles, but that's more about demonstrating a culture change than anything else, as described by Kurt Helin of ProBasketballTalk.

Brian Scalabrine set to join Warriors coaching staff (h/t KlayAllen): According to Jay King of MassLive, former Boston Celtics player and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine will join the Warriors coaching staff after turning down the Chicago Bulls. While King notes that the Warriors already have a little Boston flavor with Darren Erman, who will serve as coach for summer league, already on staff, Scalabrine will also be another coach coming from the broadcast booth to the bench (although he has been working with draft prospects as well).

Indiana to wear sleeved jerseys in summer league: Why these things are being brought back is beyond me, but Indiana will reportedly wear sleeved jerseys in summer league. Hopefully, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

That's it for Tuesday. Feel free to keep track of today's rumors in the comments below.
