I think everybody can pretty much agree on one thing right now: Bob Myers has pulled off an incredible offseason. A team with practically zero flexibility on the verge of losing our two best bench players somehow some way has not only replaced them but added even more talent. It started by shedding the toxic contract of Richard Jefferson and Andris Biedrins along with a bunch of picks. On paper losing the picks hurts but when you consider what was to come, those picks are likely very late first rounders which as shown through the drafting of Nemanja Nedovic can easily be had.
With the said new cap we got arguably a top 5 SF and top 5 defender in Andre Iguodala, a guy we basically have wanted here since, since well ever. Just with that addition alone we have gotten better than last season despite a lack of deph. With Iguodala in place we set out to look for a replacement for Carl Landry, Jarret Jack and Festus Ezeli (for half the season). But with Iguodala we didn't need another ball handler, we needed someone who can give us 10-20 minutes and play defense and shoot when asked, insert Toney Douglas. He won't distribute the ball around or manage a fast break but he can defend with the best of them. And we got him on a very cheap contract. When it comes to replacing Landry we didn't even really need to do to much with Barnes and Green ready to play as stretch fours. But Bob Myers was able to get another big body in Mareese Speights who can mimic most of what Landry does. So everything seemed set, sure we'd be small on the bench without a true center for while especilaly if Bogut went down but surely we were done right? Wrong. Myers came through with Jermaine O'neal, sure he's old and offensively frustrating at times but he will rebound and defend just as well as Ezeli. And all he has to do is last up until Festus can make a return.
But with all this new talent comes the tricky of problem of playing time. We don't want to stunt the growth of last years rookies (especially Barnes) but these new additions do take PT away from them. So how do we do that? How do we decide between Festus and O'neal? Speights and Green? Where does Barnes play along with Lee, Iguodala and Klay ? But the bottom line is that these are much better questions to be asking ourselves this time of year than asking ourselves why we paid Corey Maggette 50 million or how many D league guys are we bringing in this year.
