Defensive Efficiency Rankings per player for the Golden State Warriors.

Okay so over the past few hours I was running a few ideas for trying to measure the defensive effect of having a certain player on the floor by using his points per 100 possessions. Basically the idea is we take the PPP*100 from when the player is off the court and subtract it with the PPP*100 for when the player is on the court. The final number is the difference that shows how many points per 100 possessions the player is worth on the court. This purely tells us how much the defensive efficiency of the team goes up or down depending on if the player is on the court compared to when he is off it.. All these stats were take from http://www.nbawowy.com/ . So what i've gone and done is calculated the DefEff score for all 11 players currently on our roster.

Okay that may seem all well and good but for comparisons sake I took the names of all the players on the all defense 1st team this year and ran them through.

I will admit these results made me skeptical. While there seems to be a constant when it comes to big men in that whenever center's or prominent big men defenders are on the floor the Defensive Efficiency rating for that team is lower compared to when they are not on the court. However it's when we delve into the small forwards and guards that things start to get a little bit weird. The results tend to fluctuate from the wildly positive to the horrendously negative. I also noticed that the teams on top of the DefEff rankings players seemed to have the most consistent and non-fluctuating scores. For example the league leading Indiana Pacers players Paul George, Roy Hibbert, George Hill and Lance Stephenson all posted scores higher than 3.0 .Anyway feel free to mess around with the formula and see if you can find interesting. Feel free to give feedback this was just a fly on the wall idea that i'm still looking into. Hope you enjoy.
