Was originally going to make this a reply, but the existing thread on our interest in Knicks guard Toure' Murry was more of a joke, and this is no joking matter. We have a total of 3 guards signed for next season at this point.
Murry is probably not viewed as our #2 PG, but as a developmental combo G to give us minutes at both 1 & 2. Right now, the only bench G on our roster is Nedovic, so those guys will be competing with each other. Think of TM as replacing a draft pick.
We’ll still need to sign at least 1 vet G that we can count on for minutes, but 2 would be better unless we’re confident that we can count on the developmental guys. The competition for back-up PGs is always intense, as bad teams will offer MLE+ money to try out the most promising of these as starters. These will mostly be the younger guys who may still have some upside. Guys like Ramon Sessions, Shaun Livingston, Greivis Vasquez, Jerryd Bayless, Darren Collison. Jordan Crawford could sneak into this group, if someone buys the idea of him as a scoring PG.
More established (older) PG options include Steve Blake, Luke Ridnour, Kirk Hinrich, Devin Harris, Beno Udrih, & Jordan Farmar. Apologies to the guys I’ve left off – some are sure to be out of our price range, some I think are too small for this team, & some just slipped my mind.
Ideally someone from the 1st group that the FO likes slips & we sign them for 2-4 years. Otherwise, we’ll look to pick up an older vet for 1-3 years.
Anyone that wants to chime in on FA options for a back-up SG, or trade possibilities for either slot, please do!
