The Trade Update - Indiana's View

Be sure not to miss the Pacers' boxscore from Friday night.

  1. Guess who were the only two starters not to score in double figures?
  2. Guess who were the only two reserves not to score a point?
In a total of 75 minutes of game time, the four ex-Warriors scored 9 points on a blistering 3 of 17 from the field.

We have some growing to do on our side, but once we are healthy it will sure be fun to watch. This period without Baron is helpful for everyone else to learn to create their own shot more effectively. Just look how much better the offense looks now than it did when Baron missed games before the trade. This should cut down on Baron's perceived need to launch 3s if for no other reason than to save his legs from having to work it inside every possession (I am convinced this, and the need to open up the drive, is the reason he shoots all those outside shots, even when he knows he shouldn't).

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I visited a Pacers Board Last Night
A few of the fans are starting to complain about Dunleavey and Murphy.

At first, W's fans were kind of jerks going there and laughing at them about the trade.  The Pacers fans rallied around their team and defended it with honor.  That's how it looked to me, anyway.  Most Pacers fans are still very happy with the trade.

However, after the last two games, cracks in the armor are starting to appear.  After the last game, the constant losing and lack of interior defense and constant shooting of 3's was starting to wear down certain posters.  People were openly asking why Dunleavey could play 24 minutes in a game and not shoot one free throw?

Now what I sense is a realization by Pacer fans that their defense is worse than before, they are losing more frequently, and they are in worse future salary situation than before the trade.

I predict if Dunleavey is not traded this summer, the fans in Indiana will turn on him next year also.  They are starting to talk about trading JO due to the inability to sign anyone for the next 4 years.  That's madness!  The salary situation is sinking in over there.  They are waking up to a nasty post trade hangover, and they are getting surly.

Didn't
they get spanked by 24 pts last night!?

Agree totally
Whether they make the playoffs or not, I think I like this team more than any edition since the Webber/Owens/Spree/Mullin/Hardaway crew. Basically all the things that I fantasized about in my wildest dreams are coming to pass:
  1. Biedrins blossoming into our first serious big man in ages
  2. JRich back and totally kicking ass
  3. Monta starting at PG and making Baron look expendable
  4. Competing for the playoffs
Sorry if I jinxed us, but ... I love this team!!!

(Time to post this in the game thread...)

Whoops
That was meant to be in reply to interregnum's post.

I agree with you too, Atma, but by "Good Lord" are you implying that you're surprised?

On my list, I forgot to add...

5. Dunmurphy out of my friggin' life forever.

The only surprise to me is how crappy Ike Diogu has been. At this point it's looking like Diogu-for-Josh Powell straight up would have been a steal for us..

Defining "Good Lord"
I meant "Good lord, that's awful!"

I think Murphy might work out for them in the long run, but Dun- well Bird and Walsh should be fired for taking on that contract and Carlisle should be fired for trying to play Dunleavy at the 2 guard spot.

Ouch
Next year it will be the Pacers trying to unload Dun and Murphs contracts.

With Nellie coming in, getting rid of the white hypes, and a playoff race that WE ARE IN, this year has had the most promise since the 90's.

Bill Simmons from ESPN.com on the deal
I don't like any multiplayer deal in which you're giving up the two best guys in the deal AND taking on an extra $30 million in payroll over the course of the deal. Call me old-fashioned.

What Happens with the Philly Pick?
Aren't we supposed to get Philly's first rounder this year or is it conditional?  If it's not conditional, it should be pretty high.

by commish on Feb 24, 2007 4:09 PM PST reply actions

It's conditional
We're not getting the pick, alas. On the other hand, Phoenix is getting Atlanta's pick, unless it's Top 3. The rich get richer...

by Sleepy Freud on Feb 24, 2007 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

Just to let you guys know..
The ping pong balls only determine the top 3 picks.  Every pick after that is based on the record of the remaining teams that did not win a top 3 picl.  So the team with the worst record is guaranteed at least the 4th pick.

Basically, we're not getting a conditional pick from philly.

by ThermoElectro on Feb 25, 2007 1:18 AM PST up reply actions

That's what I said, no?
I just threw Phoenix out to show how savvy they were to demand that the pick in the Diaw/Johnson trade protected only if it landed in the top three. (Phoenix? Savvy? You don't say). As it stands, in one of the consensus best drafts in years, Phoenix will likely get a choice #4-6 pick, and we'll get only our own, likely somewhere between #9-14. Life just isn't fair.
