Diary Suggestion

let's make this place a little more organized

Star-divide

As has been mentioned often and everywhere, the diary section needs a little (read: alot) of tidying up. Here's an idea:

Posts should be labeled whenever possible, into "Report", "Rumor", or "Idea".

For example

REPORT: Magic Sign Rashard Lewis to blah blah

RUMOR: Don Nelson likes Darko

IDEA: Trade Foyle for Shaq

Reports and rumors should have links to the appropriate sources and follow all the rules.

Ideas should be detailed and pose sufficient analysis as to why BOTH teams would do the proposed trade, or why a free agent should come here.

GSoM staff could enforce at first just by editing diary titles, but eventually after the probation period, start deleting violators.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

No
matter how much sense it makes and how organized it would make the diaries, it's virtually impossible because the majority of the people aren't going to follow the guidelines and such. It's a good idea but it's not realistic with a chat forum, especially since I think there's over 8,000 GSoM'ers. Either way, if I remember I'll start to title my diaries with whatever category it may be. Who knows, maybe it'll eventually catch on.

Or
one more thing I just thought of is before you can post a diary it could have a little box you can check to put it under the appropriate category, so a box for rumors, news, ideas, trades, etc. I'm not sure it's possible cause I have no idea about webpage design or whatever it is you use to make a page. Just a thought.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jul 11, 2007 8:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think you need to expand the categories a bit
I suggest the following:
  • Report
  • Analysis
  • Real rumor
  • Bogus rumor
  • Game thread
  • Kevin Garnett discussion, continued
  • Marco! Marco!!!! MARCO!!!!!!!!
  • Meta diary, constructive
  • Meta diary, pissy
  • How bad does POB suck?
  • Look at me! I wrote a diary!
  • Coma's Corner (whatever happened to those?)
  • Gratuitous Sleepy Freud name-check
  • Hourly 49erGIANTWarrior roster suggestion
  • From the archive: Baumerworld
  • Late-night porn-spam attack!

Check that
Looks like it'll have to be labeled HIJACKED THREAD.

Sorry about that OZ -- I take full responsibility.

It's hard to keep track
HardCoreDoofus and 49erGiantJackass are definitely the same person. Baloney created a couple of alter-egos a while back, to agree with his own BS, but I can't remember their names now. I don't think Baloney and 49er are the same person, though you never know.

On a practical note: it can't be that hard to limit us to one member per IP address, can it? The multiple alias thing is pretty funny, but could start to get annoying...

don't worry she's coming over in about 15 minutes, maybe I could always sneak back on to a KG thread when she's a sleep, which knowing my stamina shouldn't take long.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jul 11, 2007 9:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

not a bad idea
but as mentioned, it probably wouldnt be followed.
Also you can usually tell which type of post by the title and more so by the poster.

and J rich 4 MVP how about breaking out the laptop and checking out the KG posts while your GF is there you know best of both worlds, maybe even have a sandwich and a cold one on the night stand.

or
we could let the moderators run the site

by jrizzle on Jul 11, 2007 10:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Less moderation and more self-policing
There are no moderators on this site. Fantasy Junkie, DJ Fuzzylogic, Hash, Yaobuttaming, and myself are bloggers/ writers. This is not a message board. This is a blog and community.

Easy rule of thumb for everyone- follow the style of the posts we put up on the front page of this blog. Diaries are intended to be a blog within a blog- meaning it's the community's opportunity to write a high quality blog post that would be the equivalent of something one of us would write for the main blog (with your own style and perspective of course).

  • Would you ever see us write something on the front page with nonsense to fill up a character limit requirement?
  • Would you ever see us not trying our best to proofread for spelling and grammar?
  • Would you ever see us copy and paste an article from somewhere else without a link or proper attribution?
  • Would you ever see us make up a rumor or anything else? (although you can't hold us to this for April Fool's!)
  • Would you ever see us have a potty mouth and jeopardize the family show we've tried so hard to maintain for over 2 years here with a profane laced blog post on the front page?
NOPE.

OptionZero's dead on- when we put up Rumors on the front page it's clearly labeled "Rumor: XYZ". There's no reason why people can't follow these tips OptionZero posted for their own diary headlines or at the very least have intelligent titles.

I personally never signed up to be a message board "moderator" and I don't care to ever babysit people here which we've unfortunately been forced to do with this community getting so large. I'm here to blog/ write and have a good time. I enjoy reading excellent diaries and great comments with different perspectives, but I absolutely detest having to moderate people's filth in the diaries and comments section.

Plain and simple- I feel obligated to always produce the best content possible for this blog. But I don't feel obligated to moderate the diaries and comments here or babysit people whatsoever. That's on the community.

Everything I write is on me- it's only as good as I make it.

All the comments and diaries here are on the community- they're only going to be as strong as the community is.

OptionZero took the right stance here by asking for everyone to self-police the diary quality here with better titles. That's what I like to see.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 11, 2007 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I should add
Not that I enjoy doing this, but we're currently deleting about 4-5 diaries a day for not following the rules of this mighty community. Again, not something I enjoy doing, but I don't want to come across as we're just being passive about this.

The way to see it is the more garbage we have to moderate the less time we have to spend writing content for the main page blog.

If there's anyone who's willing to be a "moderator" for this site drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.

posting versus moderating
For the record, I wouldn't moderate like I post.

As a poster, I'm a not bound by any real expectations except to myself really and the rules, so I don't feel bad taking shots at persons or being more abrasive.

As a moderator, I understand there's power to go with responsibility, so I'd have to curb anything too insulting. The analysis and information providing would have to stay, and I'd be no less honest, just less childish in the delivery.

For starters, my plans are:

  1. Deleting the worst diaries, such as the 49GIANTWARRIOR types that are really spam. The biggest indication of spam are excessive capitalization or emoticon-ing and a lack of follow-up. If a someone makes a "loud" diary and doesn't come back in it again, he probably wasn't here to discuss anything, just start trouble. I don't think any community needs that.
  2. Title editing. Basically enforcing this idea. No harm to the diary starters at first, just doin it for them. Hopefully after people see it enough, they will do it themselves, and that's that. After a couple weeks, repeat offenders get a warning; after that, their diaries get deleted if they keep posting stuff like "Warriors sign Lasme!!!(or player X" and turns out to be nothing but a random idea or fails to provide a source (following the copyright rules and such).
there's one other label i'd do, and that's "Off-Topic", such as for the question about why the Blazers traded Randolph
  1. Good taste. Humor's fine, but I'm pretty sure we all draw the line at rascism or sexism. The "n-word", excessing swearing, overly sexually explicit content, instant deletion, no warning. Pretty self-explanatory.
  2. Tech support. I'm no comp expert, but I might be able to do basic stuff like posting images? I'd probably need help there.
  3. Flame War Intervention
Personal attacks that go beyond friendly jibing is monitored, if it goes back and forth, then someone needs to step in. If there original diary was something positive worth keeping, then delete the inappropriate comments; if the original diary was trivial, delete the diary.

6. avoid redundancy.
Multiple game threads should be merged, obviously. If there's 2-3 more "KG" threads, they  should be combined or deleted. Some ideas have different aspects, like Sleepy noted: "should" the Warriors trade for KG is not the same as "can" the Warriors trade for KG. This is, of course, a fine line and pretty case specific.

That's all I can think of for now. I confess I've never been a moderator per se, but in forums where I'm a long-time member I already do as much of that stuff as possible, reminding new guys of the rules, giving tech tips, linking to sources, directing people to info on the web, etc.

Ultimately, I'd be working first for GSoM's bloggers, since it's their site; but secondly for the readers so they don't have to wade through 4-5 diaries just to find something worth reading.

Anyways, that's my pitch. If it sounds like something that would help GSoM, i'd be happy to do it; if not, no hard feelings, i'll just keep on keeping on.

Since
we've kinda gotten off topic here I have a question. Does anyone elses posts within a diary always seem to end up out of order so you have to browse them by looking at the time stamps to see when they were posted? Mine ALWAYS seem to be out of order.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Jul 11, 2007 11:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

QUESTION:
why do you feel like you have to make a diary making up stupid rules and trying to tell people what to do and how to make their diaries?

by travisl212 on Jul 11, 2007 11:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

self-policing
Labeling diaries and refraining from pointless, redundant posting will help keep the board consistently interesting. With clear guidelines and perhaps even templates, there's no reason people shouldn't be able to label diaries. Knowing what's recently been discussed takes more time, and the most common complaint I've seen has been that diaries repeat already-discussed topics.  Letting those repetitive posts wither from disinterest, with a standard response "this has already been addressed in (link to posts that have already addressed the topic)," should suffice to discourage all but the most determined spammers.

More aggressively negative responses are not only unnecessary but in some cases counterproductive, as they generate more attention than the spammers deserve. Aggressively negative responses, in some cases to first time posters, in some cases during a disagreement mid-thread, can be as discouraging as spam for members of GSoM. There's plenty of room for tough exchanges without crossing the line into name-calling and mud-slinging--witness some of the exchanges between atma and johnl, who disagreed heartily about just about everything and disdained kid gloves in expressing themselves, but never slipped ad hominems into the mix.  This is another area in which self-policing will help.  We're lucky in having the general tone be closer to Cheers than to Jerry Springer, so the Springeristic moments tend to stick out and give pause more here than on many other boards.  Let's keep it that way.

by mikej on Jul 11, 2007 11:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

atma vs johnl
Haha, I should add- johnl's a very good man. The crew and I met him at a game this past spring. Very sharp. Very knowledgeable. He knows his Warriors and hoops history. It was a pleasure talking hoops with him.

He and I disagreed big time (and very loudly- sometimes too loudly) on BD and Dunleavy 2 seasons ago, but I always enjoy his insights here in the comments. There's no hostility whatsoever or ill will even though he and I held some pretty oppositional viewpoints. That's the way it should be here. A community.

I want to stress that what makes this place special is that it's comprised of good folks you'd actually want to hang with at a game or outside of GSoM. GSoM Night and the 350+ GSoMers there proved that- very loudly and enthusiastically I'll add.

The day this community is filled with people I would not want to chill with is the day I retire from it.

Tags!
A way to implement the ideas mentioned in the diary is to let posters and commenters add tags to diaries, based on whatever the content of the diary is.  DailyKos, the parent site of SB Nation, has this system on their diaries, as do other sites, like Youtube.  So, for example, a diary about a KG trade would have the tags "Kevin Garnett", "trade", "idea" or "rumor", various Warriors player tags, etc.  And, if it's already on dKos, it can't be that hard to implement here, right?

by genesic on Jul 12, 2007 6:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wish
Unfortunately the Daily Kos system is far more advanced than the SB Nation one. We just don't have that ability. If we did, trust me we'd implement it immediately.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jul 12, 2007 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Athletics Nation has it too
AN has a tag system as well and it's in the same SBN system, I think.

by vignette17 on Jul 12, 2007 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope
Wish it was, but we don't have the same SBN system as they do. We're a version behind. Nothing we can do about it. We've asked several times for the recommended diaries, etc features. It's out of our hands, but hopefully we the looming upgrade there will be some tremendous improvements.

I'll admit this is more frustrating for us than you'd ever believe. We are currently the #1 blog on this network with respect to traffic and possibly media coverage, but we don't see the upgrades faster than anyone else. Both Fantasy Junkie and I have years of UI and web development expertise. We're the first to admit that this site and backend have some serious flaws. All we can do is wait.

Posting - to or not to
Since it looks like there is some housekeeping going on..

If you really know the ins and outs of DUB players/DUB recruits/"private visits" in downtown Oaktown or elsewhere...Do you post?  Are you interested? And since this site is optionally anonymous... you could always pose the hypothetical to remain just outside the boundaries, yet not "break open the safe" before the deal   BTW...I have seen rumors on other sites that reference this site.

How much...really...do we want to know...need to know...or better yet should be posted...to remain a fun credible DUB interactive site that is noninvasive to the TEAM and players that we believe in?

Thoughts?  Where is the line?  I watched pree in action with Darko...is this the line where not to cross?
