Is it time for the NBA to 'Re-Think' the Draft?

As suggested by Sleepy, I thought I would start a topic to discuss the possible alternatives systems for the Draft, as it appears that the current system could possibly encourage a team to deliberately lose in order to improve their draft position.

As I mentioned in my post in Sleepy's latest Tank update, if there is ever suspicion of a team team deliberately losing in order to gain advantage in the Draft, this approach enters some very 'murky' waters of possible match-fixing and intention to defraud a season ticket holder of their right to see their team do all that they can to win.

I am not saying that the Warriors are currently doing this, however the very structure of the draft as it stands, might tempt a team to consider it, especially if the fan base appears to be in agreement that boarding the mighty 'TANK' with commander Tank in charge of a group of 1st Batallion Tankballers to achieve the title of worlds finest 'Tankers'.. (no that is not cockney rhyming slang for something else) ;) might be a good thing?

So is there an alternative system that could established whereby the draft does not reward short term losses, but takes a different view?

Utah Draft pick

My step son said the Warriors already worked out a deal with Utah to buy their pick for cash so it doesn't matter what place they come in at the end of the year. Anyone have additional information on this? I thought they had to get into that 1-7 position in order to get a lottery pick. I have not heard anything regarding a deal that had been worked out with Utah only rumors

Thanks

A casino near the new Oakland sports complex?

You read that right. Imagine hitting the tables before or after a Raiders, A's or (ESPECIALLY) Warriors game.

I was thinking of ways to help make Oakland's Coliseum City idea work. I like what has been proposed so far but I haven't heard enough details about what would be included yet. And then it hit me. A casino would be perfect, especially if it's not directly adjacent to the sports complex.

Turns out I'm not the first person to think that a casino in that area was a good idea. Hit the jump

(And before any of you ask; NO, this is not in response to the Matier & Ross piece that hit SFGate this morning. It's here if you want to read it. I've been thinking about this for many, many months. I'm just a fiercely proud Town resident and Commercial Underwriting Analyst who wants to find a way to keep the Warriors in Oakland. This is just one idea I have.)

Jeremy Tyler: PF of the Future?!

I was watching the Warriors play last night for possibly the second or third time since the Ellis trade and I was shocked by a lot of things. For one thing, the ball movement was something I have not seen in awhile as everyone seemed to have touched the shot on nearly every possession and the rookies seemed extremely comfortable. What I did notice was the size of our big man project Jeremy Tyler. JT3 has showed me great improvement since the last time I've seen him play but I noticed he was not much bigger than guys like Kenneth Faried who is an undersized big in his own right. I think for the benefit of ourselves and Tyler's career, I hope we give him more run at the PF as it seems like more of a natural fit for him.

JEREMY TYLER (C/PF): 6'10, 260lbs

628x471_medium

(Doesn't look that much bigger than David Lee right?!)

Height w/o ShoesHeight w/shoesWeightWingspanStanding ReachBody FatNo Step VertMax VertBench PressLane Agility3/4 Court SprintClass Rank
6' 9" 6' 10.5" 262 7' 5" 9' 2.5" 13.4 28.0 33.5 10 11.26 3.29 NA

Looking at Jeremy Tyler's measurements I personally thought of a young Dwight Howard but after watching Jeremy Tyler play a little bit more he reminds me of another young big who he's just a few weeks older than. His name is Derrick Favors. Tyler has the size/athletic ability just like Favors to out hustle certain bigs and the motor to out play most bigs. I've also noticed how Tyler has a nice jumper at the top of the key that he has greatly improved and also a few go to moves in the post that guys like Dwight Howard are still trying to put together. Remember, Jeremy Tyler would only be a sophomore in college right now so tons of upside is still there.

Depending on what we get in the draft and in free agency, I do not mind Tyler being the guy backing up Bogut next year but I feel down the line being David Lee's replacement is the most realistic thing. By the time Tyler's contract is up for renewal, Lee's contract would be much easier to move as it will only have a year or two left on it. If Tyler continues to progress like he has while being able to go through a summer league, an effective off-season and a normal training camp I feel he can be a force in the league. I still feel Cali Native Jeremy Tyler will be one of the biggest steal in that supposedly "weak" draft.

Potential off-season move that could pay off

I'm talking about Greg Oden. Now the number one criticism to the post is going to be that he is injury prone and a bust. But hey so has Andris Biedrins as of lately. If you give Greg the proper time to recover he would be a whole hell lot better to watch than Andris. First off watching his free throws wont be unbearable to watch. He is almost a %70 free throw shooter for his career compared to %52 which was %11 this year by Biedrins. Second he actually has some muscle on his frame and won't be the softest guy on the court. He is a defensive presence in the paint. He is tall, big and most importantly athletic. He has the ability to block shots while looking elegant and audacious instead of a lanky bumbling fumbling wuss. Third with Bogut swallowing the majority of the minutes next season it will give Oden the ability to get back into the game after his time off. This transition will also help with his durability. It will allow him to play but not put too much wear and tear on his grandpa knees and hopefully the will be strong enough to last for extended periods at a time.

Since he just got cut and hasn't played all too much since he entered the league 4 years ago his contract will be much less than the 18 mil we owe Andris over the next 2 years not to mention the extra incentives in his contract. Now it is some what of a risk but with ever risk can come a big reward.

What about a bench?

If nothing else were to change between now and next season it would not take much to figure out who might be in the Warrior starting lineup if everyone is healthy. Of course things can change but not knowing the Warriors draft order, it is difficult to speculate. For this exercise let's just suppose we look at what we have. Then let's contemplate who we might want to/can bring back out of the faces we know.

Under contract next season are Bogut, Lee, DWright, Thompson, Curry, Jefferson and Biedrins. Based on playing time and past practice (but not without debate that could be a separate post of its own) the first five stand an excellent chance of being next season's starting five. Next is one who may (or may not) be an important reserve. Finally one most wished his contract would go go away if there was a way. Let's not debate that either.

It looks like the Warriors may have a draft pick(s) that could affect these discussions but even that could change depending on several variables. Those outcomes could even affect who is the starting lineup but again the point here is to discuss which players not currently under contract you would like to see return, if any. After several positive contributions a much improved Warrior bench provided this season it would seem possible to find one or a few players fans would like to see contributing next season.

I'll start with Brandon Rush not just because he is probably on many fans shortlist but because of his contract. He will mostly likely be a restricted free agent meaning the Warriors can match another teams contract offer. With DWright and Jefferson already under contract the issues becomes whether the Warrior wishes to pay for another wing players especially with a cheaper McGuire and possibly drafting (if high enough) another wing in hopes of upgrading the position at the starting level. Let's free ourselves of those what if's and discuss the status quo; who we would want back and why (or why not). That alone should provide plenty of lively discussion.

The rest of the current roster not under contract for next season is: Robinson, McGuire, Tyler, Jenkins, CWright, Gladness, Benson. Can't do all combinations in a poll so you are limited to one keep/dump. You can expand your thoughts in the comments. Interested to see everyone's thoughts.

NBA Draft talk

There has been quite a bit of Tank talk lately and the reason for that is obviously the draft. First off, Warriors keep on sucking and get that top 7 pick, that would be fantastic. That pick though is not the focus of this Fan post. The focus of this post is the 1st rounder that will be in the 24-27 range. The question is who should the Warriors get and why?

Final Month of the Season

We are entering the final month of the season, and if you believe Matt Steinmetz, there is a sizable camp that wants the Warriors to tank the season. I'm not usually in favor of tanking, but we aren't going anywhere this season, Steph will most likely not come back for the rest of the season. What are the chances we can finish 7th or higher? Good question.
