Golden State basketball is on the way! Come join our game thread and chat about tonight’s matchup here.

The Golden State Warriors will host the New York Knicks at the Chase Center on Monday night. The game will be played at 7:00 PM PT in San Francisco and can be watched on ESPN and NBC Sports Bay Area.

Previously with the Warriors:

The Warriors capped off their road trip with a big 128-121 win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night. Stephen Curry played his first game back from an ankle sprain he suffered more than a week ago. While he started the night off a bit rusty – zero points in his first quarter of action – the Warriors’ starting point guard inevitably made his presence felt, finishing the night with a team-high 31 points. More importantly, Curry revealed that as far as his ankle was concerned, he felt fine as everything went just as he expected.

Meanwhile, Curry’s fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, also had himself a big night. Thompson was second on the team with 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He also went 5-of-10 shooting from the three-point line as he continues to thrive in his new role coming off the Warriors’ bench.

What to watch for tonight:

Golden State hopes to keep their momentum going but will have to do so by defeating a gritty Knicks team at home. This might be easier said than done, however, as the Warriors have been incredibly average at the Chase Center this season with a record of 17-17 — the worst home record among all of the playoff-contending teams in the West.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are 18-14 on the road and are currently 2-0 on their current road trip. They have an overall record of 40-27 this season and sit comfortably as the fourth seed in the East.

Having said that, the Warriors have been a new team since the start of February. They have 15 wins during that span – tied for the second-most in the NBA. It’s been a great stretch for Golden State as they continue to ascend up the Western Conference standings, now ranking just ahead of the Lakers for the ninth seed. With just 16 games left in the regular season, the Warriors have their sights set on the Phoenix Suns, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Sacramento Kings, trailing each of them by just three games.

Julius Randle and OG Anunoby are out for the Knicks.

The Golden State Warriors are looking to build on their strong and important Saturday night win over the Los Angeles Lakers. And while today’s opponent, the Eastern Conference’s New York Knicks, is not a team that the Dubs are fighting against in the standings, they’re a pesky squad and a win would be very, very important.

Tonight we’ll see if the Dubs can get it done. Thankfully they’re the significantly healthier of the two teams. Here’s the complete injury report for both sides.

Warriors

Nobody! It’s another full squad game for the Dubs, who don’t have an injury, illness, or personal absence to note ... at least as of the time of this writing.

Out — Julius Randle (dislocated right shoulder)

Randle hasn’t played since injuring his shoulder nearly two months ago. Losing the three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection is a big blow to the Knicks, though you wouldn’t know it if you watched their last three games, which they won by a combined 46 points.

Out — OG Anunoby (right elbow injury management)

Anunoby was one of the biggest names traded this season, but he suffered a serious injury shortly after joining the Knicks. He recently returned to action after missing 18 straight games — his return coincided with those three recent impressive wins. But he’ll get tonight off to manage the injury.

Out — Mitchell Robinson (left ankle surgery)

Robinson only played in 21 games this year before suffering a season-ending injury. Here’s hoping he bounces back next year.

So this was Kerr giving hints on the way he is leaning for higher-stakes games, and several other people in the organization said to expect a slightly tightened rotation during the stretch run.

Assuming health, that means a starting lineup of Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Wiggins, Kuminga and Green and a three-man higher-usage bench of Thompson, Chris Paul and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Payton will be peppered into the mix. Moody remains an option but is again being edged out. Looney is sitting on the outside unless foul trouble or injury dictate his inclusion.

“It is tough,” Curry said. “Loon, Moses, Dario, probably in that order — especially Loon and Moses — there’s probably going to be times where they’re going to be needed. They’ll be ready. That’s the challenge they face. But this time of year, building an identity of how we want to play, that (tightened rotation is) huge.”

While the overturned 3 helped his team, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he would just as soon lived without the ruling.

“I also don’t like the rule that you can go back and look at an out of bounds, or LeBron’s 3,” Kerr said. “That seems to happen once or twice a year. I’d love to see that rule go away. I think we’re trying so hard to get everything just right, at the expense of the flow. I mean, who cares if a guy’s foot is half an inch on the line? Is that worth going back 45 seconds and changing everything, with the unintended consequences? It’s not my favorite rule, for sure.”

His return against the Lakers was timely — both for the team’s fortunes and for the purpose of disproving narratives.

Everyone and their grandmother know this fact by now, but the Golden State Warriors’ offense is monumentally much better if Steph Curry is there to act as its engine.

While Curry may not be the traditional (i.e., old school) definition of what a point guard is, he has pretty much redefined the concept of playmaking from that position — not only as an on-ball initiator, but also as an off-ball chaos generator who commands extreme attention from defenders constantly chasing him. Trying to examine his impact in terms of pre-defined roles is a futile exercise — as Isiah Thomas tried to do as a guest on Draymond Green’s podcast.

While it’s true that Green may have a bigger piece of the pie when it comes to the number of assists he generates whenever he’s on the floor — he’s second on the team in assist percentage (29%) behind Chris Paul (33.8), while Curry is behind Green (24%) — assists are just one part of the equation when it comes to what playmaking and shot creation truly are.

To be an elite playmaker in the NBA requires several factors, but perhaps the most important one is not only being able to create an advantage — it also requires being a walking (or running, in this instance), talking, and breathing manifestation of an advantage. Nothing else best captures what Curry has been for the past decade than the description above, and it’s a testament to how a system that has unlocked what he does best on offense has also been fueled by his all-time-great talent and skill.

The damage he does as he whizzes around the court like a pinball — able to come off one or multiple screens, a defender trying to keep up, and forcing opponents to make a choice (or ignore them) — is never not a fun sight to see. I would argue that it’s the most entertaining aspect of NBA basketball in the modern era, but if you think I’m too biased from watching Curry do his thing for several years, go see for yourself:

You can see why defenses are so hard pressed to defend Curry on the action above. They have several options to choose from when it comes to defending him around an exit screen or wide pindown, each with a corresponding consequence: 1) you can have his defender lock and trail, stay home, attempt to fight over the screen, and hope that he gets there on time — at the risk of the defender not getting there on time and leaving Curry open for a three; 2) switch the action, with the screener’s defender going over to defend Curry around the screen and Curry’s defender switching onto the screener — at the risk of Curry getting a favorable matchup; or 3) put two to the ball on Curry around the screen — at the risk of opening the slip/roll to the rim by the screener.

All three options above — with Curry as the keystone — generate efficient offense. Wouldn’t you agree that it’s the exact definition of someone who makes plays (i.e., a playmaker)?

Most people make the mistake of separating the concepts of playmaking and scoring, without realizing that these two aren’t mutually exclusive. Scoring is a form of playmaking, while also being the spark behind a scheme.

Curry bends and ultimately breaks half-court defenses because he can score like this:

While Curry and Green coexist in a mutualistic form of partnership, what ultimately separates them as playmakers is the chasm in scoring ability. While Green can thread passes through the tightest of windows, has delivery methods matched by few in the league, and makes himself a valued part of the offense, his inability to create his own shot and score places a lid on his value as a playmaker.

Green is the ultimate middleman, the one who acts as the bridge between the spark (Curry) and the explosion:

The “spark” — two defenders attaching themselves to Curry around Green’s ballscreen — is made possible because of the threat of Curry pulling up around the screen. It’s completely fine to acknowledge Curry’s importance as the fuel that drives this action without downplaying Green’s role as the one who perpetuates it toward its endpoint (Jonathan Kuminga).

The reverse is also true: one cannot solely appreciate Green’s talent as a 4-on-3 short-roll passer without acknowledging what made the situation possible in the first place:

And — in most instances — one can’t give Green the entirety of the credit whenever he does score. Because it often looks like this:

While Green has a knack for knowing when to keep the ball on fake handoffs, he is massively helped by Curry’s pull. LeBron James is expecting the ball to be pitched to Curry and is preparing to close toward him, but he is fooled by Green’s deception — which results in a layup.

Again, that is made possible by the attention Curry commands and Green’s ingenuity with the ball — but it’s also fair to place more weight on the former.

It’s not as if Curry himself can’t be a playmaker in the mold of an “old school” point guard. Even those possessions are born out of a desire by defenses to stop him in his scoring tracks:

Curry drawing multiple defenders inward — with Green nearby in the dunker spot to make himself available — is not a novel concept.

He creates chaos with the ball as much as he creates chaos off of it:

Which is why all this questioning and doubting of Curry as a point guard because he doesn’t rack up the assists and doesn’t pound the ball in half-court situations isn’t an enriching discussion. To devalue his playmaking because he doesn’t fit the traditional definition is to miss the forest for the trees.

Another way of looking at Curry and his value as the one who makes everything tick: In the previous three games that he missed due to an ankle sprain, the Warriors scored a measly 107.8 points per 100 possessions against the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks combined — which would be the equivalent of the worst offense in the league in non-garbage time.

Against the Lakers tonight, the Warriors put up 134.7 points per 100 possessions — a mark that would blow away the best offense in the league.

If that isn’t proof of Curry’s importance to this offense — and his enduring value as a playmaker, scorer, and overall fulcrum — I don’t know what is.

Steph Curry led the Warriors to a win over the Lakers in his first game back from an ankle injury.

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 128-121 on Saturday night. After missing the past three games with an ankle injury, Warriors superstar Steph Curry returned to the lineup for the battle between the ninth and 10th seeds in the Western Conference. With the victory, the Dubs improved to 35-31 on the season and are now tied with the Lakers for the ninth seed.

A lot changes every NBA season, but Curry and LeBron James continue delivering excellent performances whenever they face off. Lakers star big man Anthony Davis was sidelined with an eye injury in the first half, putting even more pressure on James to carry the load. James did the lion’s share of work for Los Angeles finishing with 40 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists in 37 minutes on 15-for-23 shooting from the field.

Not to be outdone by the older Akron-native, Curry scored a Warriors-high 31 points alongside 6 rebounds and 5 assists. With Klay Thompson scoring 26 points off the bench, and Jonathan Kuminga adding 23 of his own, Curry had the help to come out on top. While Draymond Green only scored 6 points, the Warriors forward caused mayhem all over the floor, recording 12 rebounds and 13 assists.

Curry may have finished with an impressive stat line, but he was held scoreless in the first quarter. The Lakers led for the majority of the first half, heavily aided by Steph’s struggles, but they were unable to build a significant advantage.

Kuminga was aggressive from the jump, knocking down four jump shots in the first few minutes of the game. Thompson and Trayce Jackson-Davis were excellent sparks off the bench as well, helping the Dubs steady the ship while waiting for Curry’s offensive outbursts.

The Warriors quickly took control of the game once Steph heated up, and led for nearly the entire second half. James managed to keep things close in the fourth quarter, pulling within four points in the final few minutes. However, any momentum for either team was destroyed by a comical video review and shot clock malfunction that made the final two minutes of regulation take more than 20 minutes in real time.

The Warriors will return home for their next game, enjoying one day off before hosting the Knicks at the Chase Center. Opening tip off is scheduled for 7:00 PM Pacific.

Golden State basketball is on the way! Come join our game thread and chat about tonight’s matchup here.

The Golden State Warriors end their week-long road trip with a visit to Southern California as they gear up for a primetime showdown against the Los Angeles Lakers. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM PT in Los Angeles and can be watched on ABC.

Previously with the Warriors:

Golden State is now 1-1 on this current road trip after Wednesday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks ended in a 109-99 defeat. Despite entering the game undermanned, the Warriors competed hard, particularly on the defensive end where they held Mavs’ superstar Luka Doncic relatively in check. Although they were able to end Doncic’s streak of eight consecutive triple-doubles by holding him to a modest 21 points, nine assists, and three rebounds; the Warriors’ own lack of offensive firepower – save for Jonathan Kuminga’s 27-point outing — ultimately led to their downfall as they could not keep up with Dallas down the stretch.

The loss brings them to 0-2 in their season series against the Mavericks. While this is significant for their place in the West standings moving forward, head coach Steve Kerr isn’t too concerned about that as he believes the team is still capable of going on a big run.

What to watch for tonight:

In the lead-up to tonight’s game, all eyes will be on Golden State for the potential return of their starting point guard, Stephen Curry. He is currently listed as questionable as he deals with an ankle sprain which sidelined him for the past three games. Having said that, he is trending in the right direction, even going as far as to say that he plans on being available for Saturday’s game.

Curry’s potential comeback couldn’t be timelier as the Warriors brace themselves for a crucial showdown against their SoCal rivals. The NBA is entering the closing stretch of the season, meaning every game matters as both these teams continue jostling between the 9th and 10th seeds in the standings. With the season series tied at 1-1 and Golden State currently trailing the Lakers by one game, tonight’s matchup represents a great opportunity for them to close this gap and potentially tip the scales in their favor as the season draws closer to an end.

The latest look at where things stand.

Throughout the year, I’ve been periodically keeping tabs on where the Golden State Warriors stand in the Western Conference playoff race; and, just as crucially, where their opponents stand.

The Dubs have slowly been improving in most iterations of this exercise but, not surprisingly, they haven’t shown much improvement over the last standings check-in, which occurred during the All-Star break.

But with Steph Curry primed to return — and a fairly easy schedule ahead of them — there’s still a good opportunity for the Dubs to make a run. While we wait for them to do that, let’s look at the standings in the Western Conference: the six teams currently holding playoff spots, the four teams currently in line for the play-in tournament, and the five teams that are already turning their attention towards the 2024 NBA Draft.

As a reminder, these are the actual standings, not subjective power rankings. And all the net ratings are adjusted for garbage time, courtesy of the fine folks at Cleaning The Glass.

Kuminga wants to play for Kerr, the same coach who at times benched him in the 2023 NBA playoffs. Kuminga also wants to join Golden State’s four-ring club – Curry, Green and Thompson – as 21st century franchise greats.

“When I look at those three people – Steph and Klay and Draymond – and I look at their pictures in the practice facility every day, I’m like, ‘This is where I want to be.’ I want to be right there.” Kuminga said. “I want to play here my whole life.

“You don’t choose and control where you want to be, but that’s the goal. That’s where I want to be. I want my name hanging next to those guys one day. And, you know, anywhere you get drafted, you always have love for the places you get drafted. And, obviously, I got drafted here. The people are great. They always take care of me. They’re always helping me grow as a person.”

“There’s no better person to pass it,” Kidd said. “He’s had an incredible, Hall of Fame career… When you talk about the point guard position, he’s the blueprint of success. He’s going to go down as one of the best to run a team.

The Pelicans are weird. Even with more time together, the starry trio of Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum is minus-nine in 658 minutes. The spacing can get clunky.

The coaching staff never seems entirely sure about which center — Larry Nance Jr. or Jonas Valanciunas — fits better with certain core lineup combinations, or how much (if at all) to shift Williamson to center. There is a gray area between versatility and confusion; the Pelicans live there.

But something real is happening. You don’t win on the road and pile up a top-five scoring margin over 65 games by accident. In some of those wins against bad and injury-ravaged teams, the Pelicans rampaged to huge first-quarter leads — icy statements of supremacy: We are better than you, and we don’t have time for this.

We shouldn’t turn our eyes too far from the present, but it’s always fun to look towards the future. So I want to address something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: what will next year’s starting five be? It’s a compelling question in part because the Warriors — 65 games into the season — haven’t really answered it for this year. Kerr has started 11 different players this year, with eight of those players having double-digit starts (a figure that could easily be 10 by year’s end). Gary Payton II is the only rotation player who has yet to start this year, and the bulk of the starting lineup alterations have been due to play rather than injury.

I have no clue who will start Saturday when the Dubs face the Los Angeles Lakers, which makes it all the more fun — and, admittedly, fruitless — to try and guess who will start in October. But let’s at least look at the candidates.

The Golden State Warriors appear close to welcoming superstar guard Steph Curry back to the lineup. While the face of the franchise has been out for the past three games since suffering an ankle injury, Curry recently participated in a scrimmage with the franchise’s G-League affiliate. In a press conference with reporters following the Dubs loss to the Mavericks on Wednesday night, head coach Steve Kerr expressed optimism that Curry will be available on Saturday when they face the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Only that he practiced and that everything went well,” Kerr said. “He’ll meet us in LA on Friday, practice there, and see if he’s ready for Saturday... We’re hoping to get Steph back for Saturday.”
