The Don Nelson Show KNBR 4/10/08
![]() Lucky's our dogg. |
I can't tell you how ecstatic I was when I heard that the Warriors picked up Nellie's option for next season. He's the mastermind behind this operation and the only coach in the league that could win 47+ games with this erratic and deeply flawed roster and stingy ownership. The only coaching upgrades out there are Phil Jackson (as long as he comes with 2 mega-stars and all time greats) and Jerry Sloan (as long as he brings a bruising 4 like Karl Malone or Carlos Boozer). After that 12 year drought we're lucky to have Don Nelson steering this ship. |
But that's not all I appreciate about this hoops legend. Nellie's pure entertainment every time the media mics him up. The weekly Don Nelson Show (mp3) on KNBR with The Razor and Mr. T is a must listen. Every time Nellie comes on he's funny, candid, and insightful. You just know Nellie's on the phone sipping a cheap American cold one when he's talking to Ralph and Tom.
Jump for some notes from his latest show.

Quickie: Kawakami Q&A with Mullin

If you haven't got a chance yet to read Tim Kawakami's blog post today, make sure to drop by: Chris Mullin Q & A: Not planning big changes for the Warriors, talking about Brandan Wright. He interviews Mullin about the current state of the Warriors. Of course, Mullin doesn't really ever say anything publicly about what he's planning, but this is still an interesting read nonetheless. He covers possible trades for a big man, is Brandan Wright going to play, CJ Watson, and more.
He probably will do something. On the margins, though. I didn't see Mullin pulling the trigger on something large before I talked to him, and now I definitely don't...
Which brings me to the final one, and probably the most significant one: Mullin, as he indicates in the Q & A, doesn't have anybody left he really wants to trade.
My favorite part after the jump...

Warriors Bobblehead Day!

I don't know about you but I get excited for Bobbleheads, I don't know why. I'm not sure I ever remember the Warriors doing bobblehead giveaways before, so this might be a first. The first bobblehead I got was a Barry Bonds one, and the head on that thing was HUGE! Haha. Even the bobblehead was on something, perhaps I got the HGH Bonds bobblehead. Okay bad joke. I really am a Giants fan. Anyways, that Mitchell Report does come out tomorrow, I wonder if Bonds is in there. Hmmmm.
But I digress, back to Warrior bobbleheads. On Monday, January 21, 2008, Martin Luther King Day, the Warriors are giving away a limited amount of Thunder bobbleheads. There are only 1000 of these available to the general public. So if you want one, you better get clicking. I would be going, but I have to work that day. Awww man! But I suspect many of you get the day off and can make the 1pm start time. The bobbleheads seem fun to me and after the Hardwood Classics T-shirt, it's probably the best giveaway the Warriors will have this year. Remember the "Where Amazing Happens" free shirt on opening night, ugh just awful. So, the bobblehead gets many style points from me.
What's more is that Chris Murphy, the famous Warriors group ticket sales rep who has been the backbone of GSOM Nights 1 and 2, is giving the good folks at GSOM a nice little perk. If you want the bobblehead and are among the first 150 from GSOM, you get to attend courtside shootaround. So you get the Thunder bobblehead, tickets to a Warriors win vs the Twolves, and you can sit courtside when the Warriors and Wolves go through their pre-game warmups. Good stuff.
The tickets are sideline upper bowl and have been discounted to $45 from a face value of $48. Also, $5 of each ticket goes towards the Warriors Foundation. So, if you're interested, here's the info.
2) In order to attend the shootaround, in the "Questions" section of the form, type "GSOM Member"
All this bobblehead talk got me thinking about what other bobbleheads would be cool.
- I'd want a Brandan Wright version with bobble ears. Just give the ears a little flick.
- DJ Mbenga probably wouldn't be a bobblehead since he has no neck, just shoulder muscles that connect his head to his body.
- Nellie with a beer can. It would be the slightly buzzed Nellie as you knock his head around. Or the beer can could bobble between his hand and mouth.
- Pietrus because well Pietrus' head never seems to be on straight.
- Dirk because even the Warriors don't play the Mavs, the fans can mess with his head.
Anyways, enjoy Bobblehead Day if you choose to go. I think it's a cool giveaway, I just won't be able to make it. I have a feeling these will go quick, so get yours soon. And feel free to tell everyone in the comments what you think a good bobblehead would be.

Chris Mullin Laughs at New York Post Rumor
Earlier this week we linked to an article from the New York Post claiming that Warriors front office man Chris Mullin was expected to be a top candidate to replace Isiah Thomas the Knicks GM. Mullin like many others thought the piece was pretty entertaining [SFGate]:
Gotta love those New York tabloids!

Mullin never forgets his folks.

Carnival of the NBA #51
Find out what the most happening topics in the hoops blogosphere are by checking out the YouTube heavy Carnival of the NBA #51. The 51st installment of this festivity is brought to you by brother site Clips Nation. Maybe if we're all nice to ClipperSteve the Clips' "Big 3" of Corey Maggette, Ruben Patterson, and Al Thornton won't torture the Warriors anymore this season. Seriously, what was going on the other night? I'm still in shock.

Don't forget to bring your cameras to this carnival!

Baron Davis Blog: Update on Monta and more

Boom Dizzle is back with his 2nd and 3rd updates to his blog. I definitely like his style. It feels like he's not filtering anything out, he's just writing what he's thinking. Yardbarker's doing some cool things getting pro players to blog on their website. The fans get to experience the personality of the players that was never accessible before. His first update comes straight from Hawaii entitled "Aloha". In it, he writes about playing with Austin Croshere and being proud of Jax and Barnes for becoming co-captains or as he phrases it "underbosses". Also, our boys over at Fear the Beard get a big shout out from Boom Dizzle.
It'll be crazy if he rocks some type of crazy design in his beard! People are already giving him suggestions on that post. You'll have to create a yardbarker account to leave comments.
Then in his latest post, "Just so you know..." he writes about Monta, and lets us all know that everything is okay.
Funniest line from the post when he's talking about POB and all the rookies playing well:
BD, nice work and keep the updates coming!

Training Camp: Day 3 Practice Video
For those of us dying to see some Warriors action, our thirst can be quenched by the latest practice video. The Warriors Training Camp blog gives us daily updates about the team. One of the interesting things from the video is how much Don Nelson stresses the importance of winning the first 2 games. No, not the first 2 games of the season, October 30 vs the Jazz(GSoM Night 2 - shameless plug) or November 2 vs the Clippers, he says the first 2 preseason games are must wins.
Then he has this dramatic pause and looks around to see people's reactions. The first time I saw it I expected him to laugh. And then he didn't so I thought he was serious. But now, after going back through it, he's got this tiny smirk out of the left side of his mouth while he looks around. Then he continues:
But I figured he was joking when he goes on to say:
Man, you never know what you're going to get from Nellie. What a trip.
Linkage
Tim Roye's been keeping a journal of his travels in Hawaii with the team. His first entry was on Day 1 of training camp. His second entry came today as he wrote about yesterday's practice and how Al Harrington was "Unstoppable Baby!". Well, not in those exact words, but he wrote how Al dominated. To further validate this, Don Nelson has called Al Harrington the best player in camp so far. Looks like shedding the 20 lbs is going to help Al tremendously.
