Exploring the rumored Crawford for Claxton and Law Trade: CBA and salary implications
I have no idea how reliable the sources are, but ESPN seems to be discussing the proposed "Crawford for Law and Claxton like it has real legs. (Perhaps the legs stolen from Speedy, hence his state of perpetual inability to play). The NBA's own website is similarly posting it as a not yet done deal, but one that's in the works. But as "it's more than a rumor goes", we are all still rather in the dark as to what, when, and, perhaps, why.
Big questions abound. Important questions. It isn't quite "what did the president know and when did he know it", but at least as far as our Warriors go, it's "what do we know about the trade and could it possibly be real?"

OPEN THREAD: Warriors Elect Not To Renew Chris Mullin's Contract; Promote Larry Riley To GM
The Warriors finally make the move that has been rumored for a long time now. Mullin won't be fired, his contract just won't be renewed. In to take his place is Nellie's guy (puppet?), Larry Riley.
What was originally reported by MT2 has been made official:
The Golden State Warriors announced today that the club has elected not to renew the contract of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin. In a related move, the team has named Larry Riley as the club’s new General Manager...
Riley has accumulated 20-plus years of NBA experience in various capacities prior to being named GM of the Warriors, including a six-year stint as Director of Player Personnel for the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies from 1994-95 to 1999-00. The Indiana native also spent six seasons as an assistant coach/scout with the Milwaukee Bucks (1988-89 to 1993-94) and six years with the Dallas Mavericks in the same capacity (2000-01 to 2005-06).
Reposting this as a story. Link to the original fan shot with comments.

Looking Ahead...
Not to be the bearer of bad news or anything, but have you seen the schedule? We're 7-19 and in the midst of a 4 game losing streak. That losing streak could very well extend past the previous long of 9. Let's take a look:
12/19: @ Atlanta
12/20: @ Charlotte
12/22: @ Orlando
12/23: @ Miami
12/26: vs Boston
12/28: @ LA Lakers
12/29: vs Toronto
12/31: @ Oklahoma City
With this Warrior team there are no guaranteed wins, only guaranteed losses. Prior to the Boston game, I see one winnable game, @ Charlotte. But even that will be tough considering it's the 2nd game of a back to back and, surprise, Charlotte has a better record than the Warriors. So if the Warriors don't win that Charlotte game, it could be 8 losses in a row heading home for Christmas.
And then...Merry Christmas Warrior fans! You get Boston and LA (the Lakers) for the first 2 games after the holiday. Yay. That could extend the losing streak to 10 games.
Then they come home and face Toronto on the 2nd day of a back to back, far from a guaranteed win.
What are the odds the Warriors go winless for the remainder of 2008? It may come down to how they play in Oklahoma City on New Year's Eve.
How does starting the new year at 8-26 sound?

The Need for Lead
Well here we are. Playoff baseball has begun which means only one thing. October.
As the A's pack up their gear and kiss McAfee goodbye, next door the Oracle stirs... In 28 days, Warriors Nation will flock to the Arena to watch the Warriors once again overcome adversity. Unlike recent years however, this year we face a new challenge. The absence of a proven point guard.
Nice wheels Monta.
Sure, this news is anything but recent. But with Monta busy getting his M class license and the start of the season (and the coming of GSoM Night V I might add!) approaching quickly, the question lingers:
"Who is the point guard that is going to lead us through our undefeated November?!"
Janny Hu of the SF Chronicle addressed this issue on Monday on SFGate.com.
Incumbent C.J. Watson is entering his first full season in the NBA. Newcomer Marcus Williams has little experience in the Warriors' fast-paced offense. Rookie DeMarcus Nelson would be happy simply to make the roster.
Now, while KBLX has has some burn time last year, I can't exactly recall if he ever started a game. So while I couldn't really throw a stone at C.J (mainly for lack of playing time), I also can't make the argument that he's going to be the second coming of Baron. So I figured I would consult the best Warriors resource I know.
You guys.

Kaz: Match or Let Him Walk?
Ever since news dropped that Kelenna Azubuike signed a 3 year/ $9 million offer sheet with the Clippers, I'm not sure how I feel about whether or not we should match the offer or let him walk. I don't think it's a clear cut decision either way because there are so many variables to juggle.
For a little history, Kaz joined the team 2 years ago as Mullin plucked him mid-season from the D-League. With injuries to JRich and Boom, Kaz wound up getting solid minutes showing he had a nice stroke and could fill minutes when the starterse needed a rest. This past year, he averaged 21 minutes in 81 games, starting in 17 of them. He's got a decent ability to score and rebounds well for a guard, but his defense on the perimeter is suspect. He started the year playing around 30 minutes per game, fell out of favor with Nellie in December and January, and then in the final 2 months found a permanent spot in the rotation.
Hit the jump for some thoughts. Why a bench player deserves so much attention? I have no idea. Maybe it's the boring offseason and there's nothing else to talk about. Maybe people like his attitude and thus a fan favorite. Or maybe we all care that deeply about our Dubs.
Also, check out the Fan Post, Azubuike signs with Clips

The Offseason Just Got Interesting
Baron opts out, signs on with McDonalds?!
After the draft where we picked up another big man project and let the trade exception expire, wake up Warrior fans, Baron Davis has opted out of his contract. What looked like a relatively boring offseason - the draft and resigning Monta and Beans - just got verrrry interesting. Opting out does not mean he's leaving, but it does give him some negotiating power with Mullin. And most likely, even if Baron leaves, we'll get some sort of compensation though I'm not sure how well Mullin will negotiate that.
Some thoughts after the jump...

I honestly didn't see this one coming at all. I can't believe this is happening. His Boomness Baron Davis has opted out of his contract. What in the name of Recall-Cohan.com is going on?
This ain't a vivrant thang.
Jump for a few quick thoughts.
