Rumor: Melvin Ely for Devin Brown + Zarko Cabarkapa + Chris Taft
In the TrueHoop comments section JonathanG (Jonathan Givony from DraftExpress?) is hearing that the Warriors have traded Devin Brown, Zarko Cabarkapa, and Chris Taft for Melvin Ely in a 3 for 1 deal. There's also probably 2 draft picks involved in the transaction.
We'll keep you updated as soon as we find out or if someone on the web reports anything. Definitely post it in a diary as soon as you hear if a trade goes down to keep the GSoM community updated with the latest.

Now thats good.
Please let this be true!
Bad Move!!
Poor Ike....
So Murph, Ike, Foyle, Biedrins, POB, .... logjam... why not throw another log on the fire.
It made sense when we were going to acquire G. Wallace....
This move doesnt even allow us to move one of those bad contracts.....
Taft unproven
Taft was a low rated 2nd round prospect (our 3rd pick) with an injury that's kept him from any contact for almost a full season.
Zarko wasn't mentioned by Nellie and just never clicked -- I doubt he'll resign in the NBA when his contract ends.
Ely isn't much but as a back-up PF/Center for a team that will probably need all the help it can get at the 5 spot.

Taft
Last season he looked good when he played. He held position in the post on defense and showed good hands rebounding the ball. He didn't look like he was going to light the world on fire, but he looked like he was going to be a solid if unspectacular pro. Where he was actually drafted is irrelevent at this point. It doesn't make him a better or worse player, but only indicates what people thought of him a year ago. The only real question is whether or not he'll ever be healthy and that's a real risk for a big man who has had back surgery at age 20.
But at the price he's at now, it's a reasonable risk to take.
Ely brings back someone who can score some, but at the expense of rebounds. Big men who can't rebound hurt their teams more often than not, probably one of the reasons Ely doesn't seem to improve the clubs he's been on. The players suggested in this means that they're talking about a deal starting at about $5million a year. For Ely, that doesn't really sound like much of a deal.
Excellent General Principle
I'm really feeling that line man.

...Looks like Taft was to make the money right for an Ely trade.
...I Liked the kid's flashes of play too.

Ely is decent

Our guys are "contracts" not players
The question is, do we want to spend these expiring deals on Ely? I agree with badnamedwarriorfan that the 2 picks are probably just 2nd round swaps...which is nice, but not that significant.
Personally, I don't think Ely will make much of an impact at all. Is this going to be a sign and trade? Our 3 contracts total $5.4mil, so is Ely going to be signed for the MLE by Charlotte and then traded to us? Do we want ANOTHER $5mil+/year guaranteed contract at the PF/C? I don't think so. I'd rather let these guys expire, or use them in a better trade to either get 1st round picks, or maybe an SF?
Just my low IQ opinion.

Looks like we posted similar thoughts
...you get the idea.
Agree with "contracts" , ...basically this deal completes the Fisher "contract" to Utah salary dump.
Add'l salary savings were realized and roster slots opened up to better balance player's roles.

Zarko getting $5.7 mil (2.2+3.5) the next 2 years;
That is $9 mil freed up; $5.5 for this trade so we know Ely will sign for $4.4 mil or more for this season. Is it a good trade? I think it is if Ely signs up for 2 years and a team opt on a third season.
Nelly projected two lineups;
Offense 1:
Baron's basic lineup;
PG BD
SG J Rich
SF Dunleavy
PF Ely/Ike
C Murphy/Ike
Offense 2:
Ellis/Dunleavy's basic Lineup;
PG Monta
SG Dujuan
SF J Rich
PF Dunleavy/Ely
C Murphy/Ike
Defensive subs
PG (McLeod?)
SG Pietrus
SF (Matt Barnes Invited to take this)
PF
C Foyle vs the larger Centers
Add'l Depth
PG McLeod
SG McLeod
SF 0
PF Biedrins
C O'bryant,(Not sure of Perovic's status)
- Owens $676,000 contract will probably be traded or dropped and the GSW will have a roster of 15 players.
I like this roster if Ely signs for multiple years. I really appreciate the way the youth is intact and set up to eventually take over.
Thumbs up!
