Why the O'bry(ant)

So I was hanging around today, and I happened to watch the Phoenix Philadelphia game in Cologne Germany.  For those who didnt get a chance to see it the sixers came back from 22 down to win it 103-100.  One of the players leading that come back, and the player who drilled the 3 pointer to put the sixers ahead for good, was Rodney Carney.  The draft is over and done, and we passed on Carney for project O'Bryant, but I couldnt help but wonder, why didnt we grab an athletic small foward who can defend the 1-3 positions.  We all know the Warriors struggle at the Sf position, Dunleavy isnt playing there anymore, and even if MP2 is solid we have no reliable backup.  So now Im asking the GSoM community, would you rather have Patrick, the chef, cheese cake cooking, pine-riding, duckduck goose playing, O'Bryant, or that the Warriors had picked Rodney, ready to contribute, hyper athletic, decent shooting touch, good defender, Carney?  I know this is pretty much beating the issue to death, but seeing Carney play in a nba(preaseason) game and do well, made me wonder who is going to be the better player in the future.

Couldn't agree more
I was thinking the same thing around the draft. I bet Nellie wouldn't have drafted POB.

Haha, but that good old legendary GSoM draft vote.

2 years in a row the Warriors have selected the leading vote getter for our poll.

I completely agree
My broken coffee table can attest for my disdain for the POB over Carney pick.  I was livid!

Also, the lost coinflip to Houston REALLY hurts.  'cause I don't think even Mully would've passed on Rudy Gay.  I really think this will haunt the Warriors for a long time, although we may not realize it.

Top 7 of '07 draft = Warriors only chance of being good over the next 5 years

gambles
the mid first round and beyond is such a crap shoot ... the Dubs are woefully thin inside and needed to take  some shots at bolstering that part of the roster (I know, I know, POB is the epitome of "thin" but ...) and he was the b-b-m-a (best big man available) besides, big men are trade bait at least while they have the "potential" tag still attached

You may very well be right, Nelson would have been tempted to grab (another) talented perimeter player ... and Carney looks like he belongs in the league

I'm more bummed about the COMPLETELY wasted 2nd round pick ...

Im with JB
Regarding the 2nd rounder....what a waste of a pick. This guy will never even sniff the NBA.

Drafting for need, needs unmet.
The Warriors fell victim to one of the classic blunders.  The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia. But only slightly less well known is this:  Never draft a big man for need after the first couple of picks.

Most draft picks don't wind up being worth much and the further down in the draft, the less likely.  The biggest busts seem to be big men drafted for need.  Drafting one for "need" usually ends with a player who doesn't actually fill the need.

Brewer
Forget carney, Brewer is the guy we should have got.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, O'Bryant was the wrong pick at the wrong time.  This team can't afford to waste the roster spot on another project (read useless for at least 3 years).  I'd like to agree that Nellie wouldn't pick POB, but I can't seem to forget his irrational love for Shawn Bradley.

I dunno
With Wagner, we don't really need him. If you're saying we had him and could've signed a big man, name a good FA big man we could've signed. Uh-Huh.
RUN FOYLE, RUN!!!!

Different games
Wagner and Carney would probably play different positions, although they could overlap at SG.  Carney is long athletic and defensively capable of guarding the SF spot.  Wagner is a good player, and Im really rooting for him to make a difference this year, but i dont ever see him guarding SFs.  And Brewer would have been a great pick also, I was just thinking about Carney because I saw a complete game that he played in.  All I have seen of Brewer is summer league highlights, but I think his game is similar, but he has less shooting ability
Theres always next year take 12

I wonder
Nellie plays small ball and we drafted O'Bryant. Hmmm I wonder if Mullin thought he was goin 2 hire nellie. Because U would think he would draft a small athletic player since it fits his scheme.

agreed
draft didn't match coaching change ... Mully had to think back then that he'd be able to change the roster and expected to move either Murphy, Foyle, or both so he drafted some big (er, tall) bodies. Then no deal, so he had to change direction to change the chemistry with coaching move instead ... based on Nelson's history, this year could very well have a revolving door on the last two roster spots ... he is a much better fit than Monty was for this roster despite the drafting of POB, and who knows, maybe POB will shine ...

POB got the mssg
Somehow (?) POB got the word he might end up in the developmental league & is responding:
"That kind of just clicked something within me," O'Bryant said this week. "I needed to go harder and stay out of the D-League."
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/10/14/SPGFILPJN21.DTL

Nelson hinted POB might be contributing meaningfully by midseason.

Admission of a bad draft pick
If a team sends you down to the DLeague that's a pretty big admission that drafting you in the 1st round was a big mistake. Not that POB shouldn't get a chance to develop, but most teams let young fellas develop with the tutoring of their own coaching staffs.

doubly so
in the case of a team as berift of bigs as GS
