Less 3's, More W's

Poor shot selection was something that all Golden State Warrior fans saw last year. Don Nelson is going to change that as we've already seen in a few preseason games. He's going to reduce the number of 3 pointers and bad shots and increase the number of drives to the bucket. I'm sure Monty felt the same way but just couldn't get the guys to listen to him and do what he said. This team respects Nelson and will listen to his instruction to shoot less 3's.

"I saw the film of guys that'd miss five or six in a row and keep shooting, either long jump shots or threes," Nelson said. "Nobody thought about driving or drawing and kicking, or getting fouled. You can't have that kind of an attitude."

Nelson instituted a simple rule: If you miss two three-point attempts in a row, you must drive to the hoop the next time you're in that situation.

We talked about that -- a rule that would help everybody but wouldn't make them reluctant to shoot," Nelson said. "We want to use the three to set up our drives. We want to get into the paint. There's a happy medium there."

From the perspective of point guard Baron Davis -- who took 324 three-point attempts last season but connected only 31.5 percent of the time -- Nelson's movement-based offense is helping alleviate the need for so many three-pointers.

"The offense is allowing us to move, to get mid-range shots and cuts to the baskets, which opens up our three and takes the pressure off of it," Davis said. "It's more of a rhythm shot than so much one guy creating."

Anyone else as excited as I am to see a good shot selection AND improved free throw shooting? If Nellie can do that, he's practically a miracle worker.

Who will have the best 3 point percentage on the team? Baron? JRich? Dunleavy? Murphy? Foyle?

Volume of 3's
I have no problem with the Warriors shooting a large volume of 3's, it's the context that concerns me.  They do fine when the 3-balls come off of drive and dish, inside-out play, but get in trouble when they make two or three passes around the perimeter and someone jacks one up.  I think Nellie is saying as much, take the 3 at the right time, not every time.

The fourth quarter sequence against the Blazers was classic Warriors, stagnant offense followed by long range, contested jumper.  Down the stretch every bucket counts and we need to get easier buckets.  Drive to the lane and create a layup, foul, or inside-out look at an open 3 when the D collapses.

Best percentage on the team goes to the dark horse candidate (and only real shooter on the squad) Anthony Roberson.  Out of the guys who play significant minutes, I'll take J Rich.

dun
b/c he never looks for his own shot, when the flow of the offense swings the ball back to the point forward he'll feel obligated to finish the offensive set, instead of being pressured to make The shot like last year.  sure he was wide open a lot of times last year, but in a good motion offense, unlike last year, he can move and hit the midrange, then build his rythm to hit the 3, esp against low post forwards.

jrich's great fantasy numbers will go down, except for rebounds.  he's still Rehabbing, hasn't played in preseason, needs to practice and build chemistry in nellie's system, and probably doesn't have a solidly defined role b/c of the above.  he's gotta get some run in.  from the preseason games dunleavy and baron have been pretty heady and potent.

yo i'm a gsofm newb!

jrich
he ended his 3pt % at liek waht 38-39%?  It was in the lower 40s sometime during the season too.  Thats a high percentage than a lot of ppl's FG %
