Roberson Making it Hard

The free agent rookie, Anthony Roberson is really making a name for himself so far in the preseason. Nelson's decision on who gets a roster spot and who doesn't is going to be very difficult.

Roberson nevertheless has turned heads with his explosiveness and shooting ability. After contributing 10 points to the Warriors' 112-103 victory Thursday over the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in the first game of the Lakers Shootout at the Staples Center, Roberson is averaging 15.5 points per game and converting 42.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. "I felt coming in here my chances were good, even with what they had. I feel like I could play, and I would benefit from the system he plays," Roberson said. "I think this system is made for me." "The biggest thing for him to understand is defensive schemes, and knowing there's more to it than just guarding your own guy," Riley said. "I think those are the things he probably needs to work on the most. If he's going to be able to stay, it's going to be because his defense stepped up."

With the glut of guards right now, Baron, JRich, Monta, Wagner, and McLeod, is it worth it to keep Roberson?

its sounds like he's someone we need to consider keeping. Someone with a sweet stroke who can come in to help a scoring drought. I will be disappointed if they turn him away. I think his defense will step up, and he will be a steal for us.

I watched him at the open practice...
I had never seen Dajun Wagner play before so I was looking for him... and I saw this guard with really solid play. You could see it in his game, his body language, the guy was hungry and making all the right moves on offense and defense. He knew when to drive and when to pull up for the J. He never really threw up a 3 that wasnt a high percentage shot. And I was like "d@mn" this Dajun Wagner could ball.

So I took the pamphlet thing that they gave us as we came in (it had everyone who was on the roster at the time and their #s) and made sure the number was Wagner's.... and it turned out to be Anthony Robertson I was watching the whole time. Robertson performed better than Wagner and McLeod during the open practice. He was the one player in a Warriors uniform that I was really impressed with that night.

And I guess he's been impressing Nellie too... I hope Mullin gives this guy a contract, he definately can ball.

#'s game
ok, without a doubt, if it was all about talent Roberson would make this team. Problem is guaranteed contracts and roster size limits.
The W's currently have 15 guaranteed contracts (this includes Andre Owens who isn't even in camp), which is the max allowed.
In order for Roberson or even Barnes (who i think has just as good of a shot to make it) to make this team, the W's will have to waive/cut and pay the remaining contract of at least one guy.
I've mentioned a few times that i would like both these guys to make the team and would consider cutting/waiving both Owens and Taft to do it.

contracts
Owens will be released before the season starts.  He's being kept in limbo only in the off-hand chance that there's a trade and his salary somehow helps to make the books right.   This will open up a spot for Barnes or Roberson.

Roberson seems to be more duplication of the small tweeners they've got in Wagner and Ellis.  Barnes seems to fill more of a need at forward.  I suspect that McLeod will soon depart making way for Roberson on the roster.  McLeod seems to 'fill a need' as the only other 'true point guard' after Baron, but if it comes to needing him to play much a) things are bad and b) guards of his caliber are readily available from the CBA more or less any time.

I suspect that Taft will be kept over McLeod if only because the promise of a big man coordinated enough to tie his own shoes trumps a CBA/Devel league caliber point guard.

I'd rather have him than McLeod
But I won't shed tears if he winds up on the cutting room floor.

Still, I always like the idea of "free talent" (guys that you pick up for essentially nothing) who make you look smart. I'd love for us to take a flier on Roberson and wind up with this being the case, as it appears it could be.

Who needs Mcleod?
See all the previous "Jazz Players are a salary dump" talk.  We dont really need him, roberson has looked good, fit in with the system, and plays hard.  Mcleod is... not that great?  I think Roberson is easily worth cutting mcleod.

a few people have been saying who needs mcloud and i couldn't agree more.  i don't think mcloud has done anything yet and this guy roberson sounds pretty good.
