Matt Barnes and Anthony Roberson Make the Warriors!

Congratulations to Matt Barnes and Anthony Roberson who both made the Warriors' final roster! They both had a solid preseason and it's nice to have them on board. Here's what Nellie had to say about them:

"They both earned it,'' Nelson said. "Nothing was given to those guys, and they made us rethink what we had intended to do."

Now that Barnes and Roberson are on board, what type of impact do you think they'll have on the Warriors' 2006-2007 season?

I'm really feeling the Barnes pickup and think he could be a solid option at the 3 spot if Mickael Pietrus or Mike Dunleavy struggle like last season. It's always good to have a scorer on your bench and from the preseason Roberson had, it looks like he could fit that role nicely.

roberson
i really roberson, he left early thinking he was a lottery pick last year so he had to have some skills, i think he will earn a spot and later this year if wagner or ellis goes down and he needs to play minutes, people will be saying "dang that was a nice pick up!"

barnes i have some issues with, he doesnt score that much and i dont know if hes a nellie player, i guess i'm biased being a stanford fan but i still just dont know if hes going to be anything

i was hoping they would cut barnes and pick someone up off waivers like jacobsen or someone like that

or maybe pick up
Luke Jackson!

yeah
thats actually a really good idea, we need a pure shooter, according to some guy on espn he said that jacobsen is a better defender, i think we should cut mcleoud (sp?) and barnes then sign jacobsen and jackson, jacobsen is like barnes but a better shooter and mcloud is useless whereas jackson could help if we cant shoot at all

btw foyle should be on the ir

hellooo
there is no such thing as an injury reserve anymore.  its called an inactive list, and putting foyle on there is not going to happen.  we are going to need his defensive presence and shotblocking ability on some nights.  what a stupid post.

by thewarriorsrule on Oct 30, 2006 1:12 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

by the way
we are not going to cut barnes!  he just made the team for a reason!  what a bad post.

pure shooter???  that was the extra dimension that dunleavy was supposed to fulfill.  i think he can do it this year under nellie.

by thewarriorsrule on Oct 30, 2006 1:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

um
dunleavy couldn't hit open shots in the past why would it be different under nellie?

NBA inactive list
Straight from the horse's mouth, the NBA rule book.

"In the past, a team maintained a 12-player roster, with additional players being put on the injured list, which forced the player to sit a minimum of five games before again being eligible to play. Now, the active and inactive list can be set on a game-by-game basis, one hour before tip-off, with no length of stay required for either list.

If, for example, a star player is injured and forced to sit out one or two games, the coach can now place him on the inactive list and "activate" another player, giving the team a full 12 players available to play. In previous seasons, that player would have had to stay on the injured list five games, so instead the team would frequently just sit the player and make do with the other 11 available players."

So Foyle or anyone else can go on or off for only one game if need be.  Sounds like a great rule.  Nelson will be using it big time me thinks!

Now the new discuaaion piece iiiissss....
Who will be the 3 on the IR?

Guaranteed to make the roster are:

C- Murphy
PF- Dunleavy Biedrins
SF- Pietrus
SG- Richardson Wagner
PG- Davis Ellis

Probobly make the roster, might not:
C- O'Bryant
PF- Cabarkapa Diogu

Pick 3 of 4 to be IRed right here:
C- Foyle
SF- Barnes
SG- Roberson
PG- McLeod

Personally, I'd have to say McLeod is a lock in for IR, he's kind of emergency if Davis/Ellis goes down.

The next three are a mystery. Nelson has shown he really doesn'twant to play Foyle, which makes him a logical choice, but he was a starter last year and is paid a lot, so that keeps him above.

Roberson has shown a lot of talent, but is behind 4 talented guards filling 2 spots.

Barnes has faired out to be fair, but it looks like Caparkapa might be able to do some SF, and I really don't think he's that great. He's also emergency if Pietrus goes down, or maaaybe Caparkapa.

I'd have to go with Roberson for another spot, simply because he's behind a good guard gonganza.

Now between Foyle and Barnes. Foyle is behind a lot of other players, and Barnes is behind few, but I think Foyles contract, former starting position, and potential trade value will serve him well to be put over the top as the 12th man.

Barnes is the 3rd cut.

If Foyle was cut, peopel around the nation would be confused, and his trade value would go down. Nellie should keep him up there if he wants any value out of him, and I think he brings a dynamic to the floor that noone else does...HIS OWASOME SHOT BLOCKING!!!!!!!!! YEAHUHHZ!

So, to conclude this post, I'll rank all the Warriors by postions they will sit on the bench:

  1. Richardson
  2. Davis
  3. Murphy
  4. Dunleavy
  5. Pietrus
  6. Ellis
  7. Wagner
  8. Biedrins
  9. Diogu
  10. Caparkapa
  11. O'Bryant
  12. Foyle
  13. Barnes
  14. Roberson
  15. Mcleod
Now I'll rank them by sheer value:
  1. Richardson
  2. Davis
  3. Murphy
  4. Dunleavy
  5. Ellis
  6. Wagner
  7. Pietrus
  8. Foyle
  9. Diogu
  10. (T) Biedrins
  11. (T) Caparkapa
  12. O'Bryant
  13. Roberson
  14. Barnes
  15. McLeod (Nice trade we made with the Jazz, wasn't it?)
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ ALL OF MY POST LOOK HERE CAUSE IT LOOKS LIEK I'M MAKING MY CLOSING STATEMENT WITH BIG CAPITOL LETTERS:
Barnes, Roberson, McLeod on the IR.

naw...too many bigmen
i doubt we will have a roster with beidrins, carbarkaba, pob, foyle, and ike on the bench.  That would leave us with 2 small gaurds and 5 bigmen on the bench noway!.  I think Zarko may be on ir and maybe Foyle or POB im not sure.  and then probably barnes will be on the 12 man team since they a sf off the bench but maybe roberson if they go with some small lineups with lots of gaurds and have jrich play sf once in a while

basically
so basically i think atleast one probably two of roberson, mcloud, and barnes will be on the 12 man roster.

Season of Injuries
Nellie will run this team into the ground.  With injuries, every guy will see significant minutes this year.

I expect Barnes will play often.  GSW back court is small so MP2 wil lneed to play SG at times and there are only two guys 6'6" and one, Richardson, is still not 100%.

sweet
Nice move, barnes and roberson making the cut. I like barnes' size and activity, and roberson, we he can just plain shoot. A great fix for those scoring droughts. Nice move Warriors! It seems like we keep getting good guys for nothing! Maybe this wasn't such a bad summer for them after all.

Your team

Watch
for them to at first get garbage minutes.

by John Patrick on Oct 29, 2006 9:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

yeah
like monta last year, but if they play well they might get a few chances for minutes during a close game and if they keep playing well they may have a spot in they rotation.

Maggette may be in play
Jim Armstrong of denverpost.com is claiming the Nuggets (who's roster is already swollen) is trying to "pry Corey Maggette away from the Clippers" who GSoM loyalists will remember from numerous posts this summer. Maggette would still be the perfect SF for GS to pick up. Point being, there may be even more player movement early this season than usual, which would suit Nelson's MO. Whether or not Barnes, Roberson, or anyone else is still on this roster at Christmas (much less Feb) is questionable.

by hardcore on Oct 29, 2006 3:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I hate this move.
Barnes and Roberson won't even be part of the rotation.

9-Man:
Baron/Ellis
JRich/Wagner
Pietrus/JRich
Dunleavy/Diogu
Murphy/Biedrins

10th man - McLeod
11th - Foyle
12th - Barnes or Roberson

I would have dumped McLeod or Zarko before Barnes or Roberson BEFORE Taft.  Taft was on a dirt cheap contract anyways with an option next year, we should have held on to him.
Watch him recover and become a force for some other team... and Mully is really gonna look stupid, letting him go in order to keep some other scrub.

by Bob on Oct 29, 2006 8:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nice to hear some difference of opinion, but....
Big men with back problems don't recover. Even small men. Its a fact. Unless in very rare cases.

And did we need another PF taking up roster space?

Those guys worked hard to get on the roster, and had excellent seasons. Great fill-ins for injury.

And we've got 3-4 still in line for PF without Chris Taft.

yes
congrats for barnes and roberson for making the team, but i don't see them getting much playing time (thank goodness).  they make for good injury reserves.  that 9 man rotation is all we need, and it will already be hard enough to find enough minutes for those 9 players.
