America's Next Biggest Warriors Fan: 3rd Place

It?s time for the top 3 essays in the Golden State of Mind essay contest, "America's Next Biggest Golden State Warrior Fan." In total, we received 9 entries and to give every one of our entrants their props and due time in the spotlight, we're going to post their essays in full in their own separate posts. We want to extend a special thank you to all of our entrants. Reading your essays was a blast and we enjoyed each and every one of them.

Here?s our 3rd place winner, Zorgon.

Well, it started when I was a child (about 8) my friend, Abhishek, showed me this totally awesome new game: NBA Live 98!!!!

If only his uniform could have said Warriors on it?

I?d never really had an interest in the NBA before (although I did play basketball), but this game got me hooked. Since we played it on the computer, we couldn?t play each other, so one of us would pass and shoot and one of us would move around. Hey, it was fun at the time. We had to decide on a team to use, so we picked the worst one, The Golden State Warriors. He didn?t like them very much, but I was hooked on their players!

The Warriors that weren?t meant to be?

To me, it was the greatest team ever. Only years later did I find out that this team never played. Anyway, I?d play whole seasons with them, and lead them to NBA Championships. At the time, I only had regular Television, and since the Warriors were never on television, I had to look at each successive NBA live and hope, nay, pray, that they would be good.

My how the years go by?

They never did get to be good, and the games themselves got successively worse. It was a depressing time. But, a glimmer of hope came to me. We finally got NBA League Pass, the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets came to town, and the Warriors were doing well!

So, I started watching all of their games! They were winning! And then when the all star break came, it was depressing. It was just like the years I had suffered earlier!

Then, when it finally came time for the Warriors to come to Oklahoma City, I came to cheer even though the playoffs were naught. I came to that game in my Dunleavy jersey, and was ready to be the loudest fan ever for the Warriors.

Eventually, halfway though the 2nd quarter, some hillbilly idiot who sits next to me tells me to quiet down, because he?s trying to enjoy the game. I shut up for a second, but then just decided to move down a few rows and get better seats, while still cheering. It was an exiting game, even if the Warriors lost in OT.

HIS TRIPLE-DOUBLE WAS PURE EVIL!

After the game, everyone at school laughed at me for cheering for such a terrible team, and that?s when I realized why I stuck with them all of these years. It is to cheer for your team, through and through. Whenever the Warriors win the championship, be it 2007, 2015, 2036, or 2079, I can say that I stuck with them through and through, no matter how bad the situation got. And that, to me, is why I?ve stuck with them, and what being a fan in general is all about. And yes, I will certainly rep the Warriors the next season, when they come to Oklahoma City twice, no matter how bad, or good, they get.

GSoM Comments
  • Very cool. Tying in the video games was funny especially, "We had to decide on a team to use, so we picked the worst one, The Golden State Warriors."
  • If we could control the Warriors ? we?d make the playoffs
  • This is what being a fan is all about, "I can say that I stuck with them through and through, no matter how bad the situation got."
  • Hooked on Damp, Joe Smith, Donyell Marshall, Spree, and Mark Price? That?s life for a true Warriors fan. Zorgon is living proof that the #1 Warriors fan in OKC is a GSoM community member
  • As someone that learned players from NBA Jam, this one stikes a chord with me. Now excuse me while I fire up my PS2.
Zorgon became a Golden State Warriors fan because of a video game. How crazy is that? Zorgon thanks for an entertaining essay and all the comments on the site, we appreciate it. Yo Jessica, let him know what he's won.
