GSoM NBA Preview: Eastern Conference Power Picks

Forget the regular season records, this who will have the POWER in the East by the end of the season:

1 Shaq's not going to try till the playoffs, but Wade's going to have a monster, MVP-level year.

2 It won't be pretty, but they'll win a lot with that defensive mind set.

3 It's between DWade, Kobe, LeBron, and TMac for MVP this season.

4 If these guys could just be more consistent and a little better on the defensive end, they'd be a force in the East.

5 They're fooling themselves if they think they can play uptempo minus Ben Wallace's D and win a lot of games.

6 Kidd and Vinsanity are always a pleasure to watch.

7 There's no way AI and CWebb miss the playoffs again.

8 You're going to think I'm crazy, but they're headed in the right direction.

9 They'll have some drama as usual, but Rick Carlisle will have them fighting for a playoff spot up until the end of the season. 40% chance Jermaine O'Neal is gone at the February trading deadline.

10 They'll be magical next season, but this season just OK.

11 They overachieved last season.

12 $10 says they draft or trade for another swingman before the 2007-2008 season starts.

13 They won't have as many injuries and they'll be better, but still be pretty bad. Maybe Michael Jordan can suit up for them.

14 Chris Bosh should've bolted for the United States.

15 Nice job Danny Ainge- waste away Paul Pierce's prime while surrounding him with some extremely overrated youth.

How do you think the Eastern Conference will play out this year? Post your picks in the comments section and we'll see who did the best Miss Cleo impersonation after the Eastern Conference finals in late May.

Eastern Confrence Rankings
Miami
Detroit
Cleveland
Washington
Chicago
New Jersey
Toronto
Philadelphia
Indiana
Orlando
Milwaukee
Atlanta
Boston
New York
Charlotte

You're right, I think you're crazy with the Knicks headed in the right direction.  Toronto is my sleeper team in the East this year.  Have to agree Orlando is a year away still, but if Howard's improvement from last year to this year is on par with season one to season two - LOOK OUT!

What is T-Mac doing on the list of potential MVPs?  I have him in the top 4 of my most likely to hit the injured list by December, but not on my MVP list.  Sleeper MVP prediction Gilbert Arenas.

Knicks will Suuuuuucccckkkk
The Knicks at 8?!!?

They have serious problems. Larry brown exaggerated them but the knicks are a deeply flawed team.  There are too many egos and not enough shots or minutes at PG/SGs (starbury, franchise, crawford and richardson).

Centers Curry and Jones are out of shape and space out.

SF Jefferies is injured and out for a while and Rose is too old.

May and Frye are the two bright spots so I bet they bpth play as PF/C.

Finally, Thomas is a dead duck at the end of the year so the incentive to listen is minimmal. The first sign of trouble and the team will turn on him and lobby for their own cause.

I'll wage Dolan fires Thomas using the sexual harrassment lawsuit (recent finding of probable cause so it's a real issue) as an excuse to sever his contract, make a scape goat and save money.

Picks
This will win you at Vizzegas.
  1. Chicago- Yes, you've heard it here....Chicago has all of the pieces and the experience/young talent mix to get the #1 seed.
  2. Detroit- Nazi Mohammed, Ben Wallace, whats the diff?
  3. Miami- This team will collapse in a couple years. They should wear hardwood classics every night.
  4. Cleveland- Cleveland lost Flip Murray, and really did nothing to improve. Still a champinship contender.
  5. Orlando- Heres where the records dip down a bit and we get to the muddled middle. Expect comeback player of the year for Grant Hill (he drinks Sprite!), All rookie team for J.J. Redick, All-Star team for Mr. Howard, and to top it all off with a cherry, the 5th seed. I REALLY want to see the Orlando/Cleveland battle.
  6. Washington- Haven;t really improved much, while other teams have.
  7. New Jersey- Can you name the entire Nets starting roster? Can you name a bench player? I sure can't. If RJ, VC, or JK goes down, their season is down. I'm betting on it happening.
  8. Toronto- Might as well rename themselves CSKA Moscow or Benetton Treviso. These guys are Euro.  I think that they really will make a impact on the NBA, and player whos names you've never heard before will shoot up. I might see a first round upset of the Bulls...I see mathcup problems.
  9. Philadephia- Philly didn't want to get into the playoffs last year. This year they won't get to even if they wanted to.
  10. Boston- What the heck? This is where it drops off to the fugly. Bostons roster is stupid. By the time these kids get to lose their baby teeth, Paul Pierce will be in a rocking chair. Paul Pierce- you've got a reason to move. And quick.
  11. Indiana- Inner turmoil. Chemistry zilch.
  12. Milwaukee- This roster has not improved anywhere. They won't have any chemistry anyway. TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK?
  13. New York- You don't have two point guards! Wargh! I'd drop MArbury or Francis and take Jalen Rose anyday. The Knicks are still idiots. They fired freaking LARRY BROWN. 'Nuff said.
  14. Charlotte- Rawk Chawk Bob Cats! Morrison is kinda over rated.
  15. Atlanta- U-G-L-Y.
Golden State got the POWER!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and
we'd all love to see a Michael Jordan Comeback!

I swear he could still start!

What up folks?
Don't know the extent of the order of the East, but will say that Chicago will be up at the top, and the Knicks will do better than people are expecting.
I think Marbury has breakout season (but that's because he's on my fantasy squad).

Anyway, 1st time posting from LBC and plan on getting up to Tha Town to check out some Warrior games...early as Nov. 11th. What!

Holla

Giving a shout out to Mr. Mean, Purvis Short, J.B. Carrol and of course, Mr. Bill King

Movin' em up
I see Orlando a little higher up, definately above Philly and the Knickerbockers. But I pretty much agree with 1-6.

I can understand why you like the Knicks...
Seriously...as Warrior fans - shouldn't we all be able to relate to the Knicks?

Their team was built by Isiah Thomas and for Isiah Thomas.  The personnel on that team is fit to how Isiah feels a team should be run in today's NBA.  The Warriors team was built by Chris Mullin for Chris Mullin...it just so happens that Chris Mullin's ideas on basketball are the same or at least very similar to Nellie's ideas.

See where I'm getting at?

They're a wildcard for me when I look at it from that perspective...

by jms1107 on Oct 30, 2006 10:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

A couple of crucial differences
Mullin is an average NBA GM while Isiah is a total fool with a fetish for lavishing ridiculous sums of money on overpaid, big-name "stars." Moreover, Mullin seems like basically a decent guy, while Isiah is, was, and will always be a smiling, phony scoundrel -- "Pond Scum," to use Michael Jordan's words. I used to like the Knicks, but as long as Pond Scum is in charge, I can only root against them. Didn't Dolan give him an ultimatum this year -- playoffs or else? I can't wait to see the expression on his face when/if he fails miserably. Here's hoping...

Draft pick
If Philly makes the playoffs the Warriors don't get their first round pick right?  I heard that the Warriors only get Philly's first rounder if they miss the playoff's.  So move them to the 9th spot!

I agree...
LETS GO INDY!  Knock off the 76ers and give us a lottery pick this playoff season!

Eastern Conference...
  1.  Chicago (I know it seems like they're overrated, but they gave the Heat more problems than Detroit did in the playoffs last season... and they had a solid mix of offense and defense before Wallace got there with Chandler, and he didn't do anything on the offensive end... Think about their defense now.  The Chicago Bears probably inspired them. Noccioni for 6th man of the year award)
  2.  Miami (The champs are still good, but Shaq will be on cruise control until the playoffs which definately knocks them down to #2 in the East).
  3.  Cleveland (Lebron James for MVP... Nuff said!)
  4.  Washington (Arenas + Jameson = Warriors... oh what could have been)
  5.  New Jersey (Kidd still has enough in to be very good this season, and Vince & Jefferson can only help him get to 10 apg)
  6.  Detroit (The loss of the TRUE MVP of the team will reveal the weaknesses in the overrated Chauncey Billups.  Prince will vie for the most improved player of the year)
  7.  Philadelphia (Iverson can't be out of the playoffs this long...)
  8.  Orlando (Exciting young nucleus with a HEALTHY Grant Hill should be enough in the weak bottom half of the Eastern Conference)
  9.  New York (I agree that they should be improved with clearly defined roles this season.  Frye, Starbury, Curry, and Francis should all have improved numbers across the board this season)
  10.  Indiana (J. O'Neal will get injured AGAIN as it seems almost inevitable for something to go wrong in Indy)
  11.  Boston (This is as good as Paul Pierce is by himself)
  12.  Milwaukee (Villanueva vies for most improved player of the year award... and thats about it)
  13.  Charlotte (Rookie of the year Adam Morrison isn't enough to save this team... YET)
  14.  Toronto (Yes... There IS a team worse than the Raptors this season)
  15.  Atlanta (This team just has no hope... it's not the team, it's the ownership!  A lot of players filled with potential, too bad that they won't be able to get it together)

by mightymadskillz on Oct 31, 2006 12:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I'd throw Gilbert Arenas into your MVP mix
In fact I'd say he's a lot more likely than McGrady, who may not even be the dominant player on his team. Plus the MVP voters seem to like primary ballhandlers, as the two-time defending MVP in Phoenix will attest. My order:
  1. LeBron (it's his time)
  2. Arenas (or maybe his)
  3. Wade
  4. Kobe
  5. Baron Davis (OK, a hugely biased pick, and partially based on that one sick performance in preseason against Portland. But I do think if he stays healthy he could be in the Top 10...)

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 31, 2006 2:11 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Trust me ... I know!
1.) Detroit
2.) Cleveland
3.) Miami (Need some more support for Wade)
4.) Chicago
5.) Washington
6.) New Jersey
7.) Indiana
8.) Orlando
9.) Philadelphia
10.) Milwaukee
11.) Toronto
12.) Boston
13.) New York (Give Spike the ball!)
14.) Charlotte
15.) Atlanta
