Extending Pietrus
Monday night is the deadline for the Warriors to give Mickael Pietrus an extension or he will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. A restricted free agent is basically the same as a free agent in that he can go receive an offer from another team. The one catch is that his current team has 15 days to match the offer, and if they do, the player remains on the same team.
I can't possibly imagine that Mullin would give him an extension after last season, but weirder things have happened. At least it doesn't seem to be affecting Pietrus.
Saturday, he didn't waver in that commitment, even as it became more evident that the No. 11 overall pick in the 2003 draft will become a restricted free agent after this season.
"I still love everybody, no matter what the situation, contract or no contract," Pietrus said. "I just want to enjoy my time here and learn from the best, like Coach (Don) Nelson."
Assuming that Pietrus doesn't get an extension, what kind of year would he need in order to warrant a possible 3-5 year extension?

There are
The Warriors HAVE to eventually cut Barnes or Roberson before their contracts become guranteed in January or else the Warriors will be over the cap by a few thousand. Unless they find some way to dump Foyle, Murphy, or Dunleavy for expiring contracts.

pietrus
if he's going to extend him now, please get him for as cheap as possible!
i think pietrus is going to be a good player, so if mully waits until the end of the year (when pietrus' value is sure to rise up and he demands more $), he could save more money now.

hmmm
Don't make the same mistake for the 3rd time
Look at last year's key restricted FA's- Wilcox and Gooden (forget about Nene- the Nuggets gave him a foolish amout of money)- both of their teams played hardball and gave them short offer sheets at very reasonable rates. Restricted FA's almost always seem to stay with their team. Let the market dictate how much MP2 should make, not Mullin.
Just imagine what type of contract Mike Dunleavy would have gotten this past summer after the terrible season he just had. He'd be lucky to get half of that 44 million. I bet no one would offer him a deal and the Warriors would have signed him to a 1 year deal.
Nellie's back, so I wouldn't expect the Warriors to continue making foolish mistakes.
