The Blazers' Changing Paradigm Bar-right-arrows

Spartan Coverage of the Warriors

San Jose State's finest Kris Anderson (what you thought SJSU's finest was Jeff Garcia? haha) got a chance to check out the Warriors on Media Day. Definitely check out the piece Warriors ready for season that Kris wrote for Spartan Daily. It's filled with great quotes from Warriors players. Tell 'em we sent you!

One of the quotes in the piece that's worth mentioning comes from Mike Dunleavy:

"I don't have any problems playing any position," Dunleavy said. "They haven't used me the right way."

Janny Hu's article today in the San Francisco Chronicle echoed Dunleavy's criticism of how past Warrior coaches used him:

Mike Dunleavy flatly stated Monday that his previous NBA coaches didn't use him correctly.

Even Mike Dunleavy's biggest supporters have to admit that's a pretty bold statement coming from a guy who's never lived up to his #3 overall selection or fat $44 million dollar extension. Dunleavy's never really had to earn those 30 minutes a game either. Given his age and past performance, at this point in his career I don't think anyone believes Dunleavy is a star. He's a role player and role players are supposed to do whatever their coaches ask of them. Role players adapt to their team's needs and fit into the system; the system doesn't revolve around them.

Oh well, I don't mind people talking the talk as long as they walk the walk. Let's see if Dunleavy can live up to his own hype this season.

Do you think Dunleavy's performance thus far as a Warrior is his own doing or the result of Coach Musselman and Coach Montgomery not using him how he thinks was the "right way"?

It must be racism..
That's the only excuse for his preferential treatment.  Flat out, the fact that anyone could even stand to listen to Dunleavy let alone support him playing or identifying as some sort of significant part of the Warriors, MUST be because of some sort of REVERSE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION movement in basketball.  FLAT OUT.  I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT THINK OF ANY OTHER REASON.  Seriously.  This has got to be a joke.

What about J Rich?  The other coaches didn't use him right, but he stil performed! And he actually got better! And what about Murph!  Now that white guy can play!  Remember the Portland/GSW fight after the end of the when Rasheed/Bonzi were on the Blazers still?  Dunleavy ran away and Murphy started swinging.  And Murph, unlike Dun, is still quiet and humble.

Dunleavy seriously needs to check himself because the Bay Area will call him out if he keeps us from the playoffs for the first time in 13 years!

Very upset! Can you tell?!

Big Deal
Mike's biggest supporters don't have to look far. His future hall-of-fame Coach is saying the same damn thing.

Maybe Nellie is wrong about Mike's skills but point is he'll use Mike differently that Monty and Mussleman so.... we'll see real soon if Mike's a talent or not.

BTW, Swinging away is wrong.  The Pacer/Piston fight proved that point. Let the NBA officials use tapes to review and police the game.  If it's trash talk - pfft - why take Wallace or Wells seriously?

by joe sez on Oct 4, 2006 10:18 PM PDT   0 recs

good point
fighting is wrong, swinging was wrong, but in this case, he stepped up to defend a player, wells had taken the first punch at a warriors player after the buzzer, under the basket, and murphy was the only warrior that jumped in defense.  perhaps this is why the warriors never bothered to try for wells?

All Wells Ends Wells
I like Murphy's spirit.  I don't fault Dunleavy for taking a pass.

As I recall, GSW SF Mills tried to fight Bonzi after a home game -- blocked the Blazers bus with his car and called him out.

I agree that GSW avoided Wells - Bonzi Wells is a very bad apple who thought a good end of year push would set him up for a several more high paid years of jerking people around. Now Bonzi has to keep his shit together for a whole season in Houston if he wants another long term deal.

Kermit Washington of the Los Angeles Lakers drew a 60-day (26-game) suspension in 1977 for a punch that broke the jaw of the Houston Rockets' Rudy Tomjanovich during a game, while Dennis Rodman was suspended 11 games for kicking a courtside cameraman in the groin and six games for head-butting a referee.

Spirit
I like spirit, too -- but as you note that's not really the point.  For me, the point is that Dunleavy's the only guy on the team that will give a hard foul when it's needed.  He did do it to Kobe, and quite effectively.  More important, he did it to big, bad KMart in a Denver game last year when KMart was lighting it up on Murph for 20+ points in the first half: on an open KMart drive to the basket, Dun just took him out.  I don't think KMart scored the rest of the game.  THAT's much more important to me than joining a teammate in an extra-curricular fight.  It's also more calculated (less immediately responsive) and shows his awareness.  Would that others on the team would do the same.
Dun's real problems are two-fold: he hasn't been used effectively and he's been the second worst shooter on the team.  As to the former, Nelson should be the perfect coach: if he can't get a good year out of Dun, all the "Dun critics" will be right.  But I'm betting on Nellie and Dun on this one.  As to the latter, I DO have some doubts -- especially after watching Dun miss so many open mid and long range jumpers last year (tho I think he's a very underrated driver, and he -- unlike MP -- finishes, even when he's fouled).  Nellie won't want him to be a scorer, but when left alone, he's gonna have to be able to knock 'em down or his value will decline substantially.
In sum, the system should be perfect for him.  If others embrace it -- and hit their free throws -- the W's should have a real shot at the playoffs.  BUT, to make this work, Dun will have to hit a higher -- say 43-45 -- percentage.  If he does, all this criticism should vanish -- assuming it's not just personal animosity.

To Dun's Credit
I think last year was just an outlier shooting wise. He's always missed wide open shots (his % should be way higher), but he hasn't been a horrible shooter most of his career. He's a below avg shooter, but he's not that bad. Or maybe he is?

We'll find out.

by Atma Brother ONE on Oct 5, 2006 10:17 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

At least he's not the worst. . .
Just as I think Davis will shoot over 40% this year, in Nellie's system, I think Dun will top 43%.  We all cringe when Dun -- or any W (not just BD) -- clanks a wide open shot, but some guys just shoot better when they're covered.  (Perhaps that's counter-intuitive, but it's true.  JRich is a good example: give him too much time or space and you'd do well to bet against him; cover him and he's close to money.)
No, I sense the W's problem this year will not be poor shooting (I know, I know, this is historically a horrible shooting team -- but in a motion offense, with committed, agile and smart players, any team will score); rather, it's going to be defense (we've got small guys who don't defend well -- a key might be to wear the other guys down, which worked pretty well for Run TMC).
There's a lot to learn in a month.  Looks like the boys are off to a good start, and Nellie's pulling off his typical "talk hard to the Press at first, and then coo about how every seems to have gotten on board" entry on the scene.  But the proof, as they say, will be in the eating.  I'm anxious to see how things look on December 1 and, again, at mid-season.  We'll know what's working (and what's not) then.  For now, we might as well sit back and enjoy the possibilities of success, something we could never have done were Monty still coach.

by johnl on Oct 5, 2006 12:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

enough already!
OK OK I'll take it easy on Dun, since it makes no sense to bash him if we're stuck with him and there's still a chance he might slightly improve.  I guess it's better to be optimistic about the future, plus we want to build up his "image" so somoene will actually have an interest in acquiring him someday (ehemClippersehem).

However, on one final note, I will say that there are MOST DEFINITELY other factors outside his ability to play that contribute to some peoples' opinions on this site.  What are those factors?  I have no idea.  But, that's my opinion, and I'm over this.

Let's go Dun, and let's go W's.

Well...
Dunleavy IS right.  Coaches haven't used him the right way at ALL.  They didn't put him on the bench!

AHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

well
he better hope to god he is right. This is make or break time for Dunleavy, he better hope Nelson knows how to use him cause im not sure he knows himself.  At least in Nelson we will get a coach who isnt afriad to dole out minutes based on performance, not paycheck, which seemed to be Monty's strategy several times last season.
Theres always next year take 12

by FoyledAgain on Oct 5, 2006 1:51 AM PDT   0 recs

Hmmm
I seem to remember the biggest chicken S*** in the league. Threw an unwarranted elbow at Dunleavy and tried to throw down with him and Dun stood his ground. Oh that chicken was Kobe.

by boogielew on Oct 5, 2006 1:51 AM PDT   0 recs

Remember that elbow to Bibby in the Conf finals?
Kobe took out Bibby in game 7 of the NBA Conf finals.  He then tried to shake his hand as if it was an accident.

by joe sez on Oct 5, 2006 7:45 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Elbows
Wasn't that the same year that Kobe's teammate, Karl Malone, tried to take out Steve Nash's teeth with an elbow? Nash was bloodied and required several stitches in the mouth. Malone also gave Isaiah Thomas several stitches, knocked David Robinson unconcious, broke Donyell Marshall's ribs, list goes on..

the power of positive thinking
maybe if mike thinks he's raw, he will be raw?
Leon Powe could have been our next Larry Smith. Instead we have a couple more candidates for the next Joe Barry Carroll.

by OaktownWarrior on Oct 5, 2006 4:32 AM PDT   0 recs

hahaha
Dunleavy should avoid talking to media if at all possible.  That is the most ridiculous statement I've seen.  "I've missed so many wide open shots because I wasn't being USED right!"  What does he need, to be a few inches farther to the right when Baron shatters the defense and kicks him the ball with not a defender to be found?

I have always agreed with GSDubz on this, that if Dunleavy was a black player, he probably never would have started a single game.  It's half racism and half hoping he'll live up to his father's game.  Dunleavy's fans use ridiculous logic to describe how he's a good player, talking about his knowledge of the game, etc.

I don't care what anyone says, Dunleavy's chucking of 3's last season bothered me a whole lot more than Baron.  Sure, Baron probably averaged more attempts per game.  Baron also shot a comparable percentage and most of his 3pt attempts were closely guarded.  Dunleavy, after missing wide open 3's ALL SEASON just kept on hoisting them up.

For such an intelligent basketball player, he sure says stupid shit all the time, looks like a complete idiot all the time, and has probably the worst shot selection on the team.  You're a 6'9" forward, get the hell inside the 3 point line every once in awhile, PLEASE.

this season
even if dunleavy does great this season, the fact that dunleavy can only play good for one coach still means he sucks

by travisl212 on Oct 5, 2006 2:43 PM PDT   0 recs

Way harsh. . .
There's really only one coach Dun hasn't played well for -- Monty.  Musselman didn't like him and almost refused to play him -- perhaps because MD called him on his unfortunate petulance -- so he didn't really get a chance there.  And, as I recall, he and his team did pretty well in college, when he was playing a lot of four (Nellie's plan).  If gives me pause when people say things like "I don't care what anyone says" or "even if he plays well, he's still terrible."  Almost as if their prejudices automatically overcome any possible reality.
What's the agenda here?  Why would a fan want so badly for him to fail he'd still consider the Dun a failure even "if he does great this season"?  What are we -- and I'm including Mully, Nellie and others who like a team game -- missing?

by johnl on Oct 5, 2006 4:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

again ... gotta agree with JohnL here ...
Look no doubt many of us Warrior fans do not like Dunleavy for a plethora of reasons. But I say this is his chance to prove all the doubters out there wrong.

I'm not a Dunleavy fan, but a huge Warrior fan so I HOPE TO GOD ... that he has a break out year. it would be nice for him to play well and for our team to gell.

So I say give the guy one more season to prove his worth ... and if not ... then go back to hating LOL

by YaoButtaMing on Oct 5, 2006 8:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed, and ditto for
Barren, er BD - BOTH these guys have a TON to prove to coaches, fans, league, and most especially themselves - as for the race references, both are due criticsm, and praise if they turn it around under Nelson. Either you can play and WIN or not, in many ways sports is the great equalizer in that one must fall or stand on the team's success, and your performance and skills are naked for all to see. The comments above and elsewhere re Dunleavy being given more (or less) credit because of race are certainly food for thought in a society so imbued with strained race relations. But we are all agreed, it's the WARRIORS we want to see succeed, have a winning season, make the playoffs, win in the playoffs, and dare I hope for a repeat of the magical season Wilkes, Barry, and the rest under Attles?

hahaha i was just playin.  yeah your right if he does have a great year i will definately give him his propz.  you've got to understand my frustration tho
