Dunleavy: Put up or Shut Up . . . or Just Shut Up

From today's CC times:

"And at Monday's media day, he didn't exactly spare the feelings of either Montgomery or Eric Musselman, saying of his two previous pro coaches that, 'I never really felt like I was being used the right way, plain and simple.'"

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/sports/basketball/nba/golden_state_warriors/15693673.htm

Don't you think that he should maybe start not to suck first and then start talking trash about coaches not using him right? Like he thinks he's some special weapon that was never correctly unleashed by his idiot coaches.

I just think he needs to prove that he's a good player first before he starts running his mouth. Better yet, play well and don't say anything. It's not like he ever has anything interesting to say. It's usually either bland or surly.

That said, I hope he does do well and give us a reason to root for him because we're stuck with him. Him shutting up, taking responsibility for his play and not being a jerk will make pulling for the guy a lot easier.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Dunleavy bashing seems like a dull hobby
Nelson seems to agree with him that he's been used poorly in the past.

It's cool for Nellie to say it
He's a coaching legend and he has to hype up his players for the trading market- there will be changes this season.

But why is Dunleavy saying it? Wouldn't he at least want to wait a few games, tear it up, and then hype himself up? This talk is pretty premature.

My biggest concern with Dunleavy is that he never seems to take responsibility for his poor play. It's always the system or the coaches, or Baron's "streetball". Pretty prima-dona attitude for a below-average NBA player.

And yes, Dunleavy gets way too much attention. He's arguably one of the worst starters in the league and not even one of the best players on this team. I have no idea why the local media gives him so much airtime.

Not bashing
just pointing out that he doesn't make it any easier on himself, from a fan's perspective, by having a smug, non-apologetic demenor and going out of his way to blame other people for his poor play.

We all want him to play better, and I think he will. I just want to feel good about pulling for the guy.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
If his statements are accurate, and in this case I think they were, they should stand on their own merit.  He also said that he was unhappy with himself for missing wide open shots.  Doesn't sound non-apologetic to me.

I believe at this point, Dunleavy can do no right in the eyes of many fans.  If he's quiet, says nothing, someone will find a reason to criticize him for passively going along with the losing program.  If he speaks out, he's guilty of some other crime.  If he should "not suck first" but part of the problem has been that he has been used sub-optimally, is it better for him to shut up and continue to be used poorly?  What he says is irrelevant.  I doubt that his silence or words in either case will make anything easier on him.  The only thing that will really make fans feel better about pulling for him at this point is his performance on the court.

Good points
I think he needs a change of scenery. A trade would be good for him and the team. Both sides need to move on. The problem is that god awful contract. Or else a Maggette trade might've worked.

Lol
You just take some reason for why people shouldn't hate him and give support to your stupid Corey Maggette trade! Arr!

You know you hate him.

Wait, sorry
Eh, I had bad reasoning. You're probobly right, Dunleavy is going to be hated here forever, bad or good. He's become the Alex Rodriguez of Basketball.

Dun
This is bullcrap what he's saying. One of the biggest reasons he sucked (s) is because of his terrible shooting. The coach does not affect your shooting percentage or anything like that.

by John Patrick on Oct 6, 2006 4:29 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

and he admitted it
His statements included that he was disappointed that he missed many wide open shots.  He didn't blame that on anyone else.  If that's the biggest reason he sucked, he took responsibility for it.

Baron's quote
At least Baron is saying he has faith in Dunleavy.
Said point guard Baron Davis: "Mike Dunleavy, I believe in him, and I think that Coach Nelson is the guy that's going to push him over the top."

I'm not sure what he means by over the top or what he expects that to be but I'm glad our point guard has confidence in Dunleavy's potential to succeed this year.

forget what he says
why is anyone even listening?

how he shoots IS important

AND who is he going to guard?!

by hardcore on Oct 6, 2006 5:08 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well...
Actually, if you think about it, everyone's expectation of him was that he was gonna be a dead-eye shooter in the mold of Chris Mullin.  The fact that he was a Mullin favorite and also the fact that he's white (i'll stand by that statement) swayed people into thinking that that was his game.  But the truth is that MikeD grew up playing the game as a PG.  In this regard i'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt when he says that his previous coaches were not using him correctly.

Looking back on last season, i remember that his best games were when he spent more time handling the ball.  I think he can excel as a point-forward if the offense is structured correctly for it.

Dude
That's mean. All he did was sying that he wasn't being utilized in the right way. And its true! Dunleavy is not a SF spot-shooter.

And what is he supposed to say? "Well, I think I'm just a terrible player and shouldn't be starting, why don't you all just kill me now." No! He's gotta give some reason why he will be better this season after a very disappointing one.

Hating Dunleavy is just too much of a fad.

Just because he gets bagged on alot
doesn't mean it's a fad. It may mean that he keeps making an ass of himself on and off of the court. I'm specifically addressing him talking sh*t when he hasn't played well. Even if it wasn't entirely his fault, he hasn't earned the right to blame other people. Not to conceed that he was made into a spot up shooter before he sucked. He was tried in all sorts of roles, including backup PG.

If he was good in the NBA and a new coach made him a spot up shooter and then he sucked, then he may be able to say something. A guy who has never produced, above a semi-mediocre level, in the NBA has not earned the right to point fingers.

"What is he supposed to say?". How about NOTHING. How about, "I'm really excited about the opportunity to play for coach Nelson, now Warrior fans will finally see what they've been expecting from the #3 pick."?

I just have a problem with a guy blaming people, who are not around to defend themselves, when he doesn't have a track record to back it up. And I hope you're not going to talk about his track record at Duke. We all know what that's worth in the NBA if your name isn't Brand or Hill.

I do appreciate the fact that there is a Dunleavy apologist subculture emerging at GSOM, that will be fun going into the season, especially if Dunn thrives in the new system (which I hope he does).

You do have point
But the rip was very light. I mean, are Musselman and Montgomery good coaches anyway? Well, the jury is still out on Musselman I guess but Dunleavy is just giving reason for why he will be good now. And does he really want to bring up his status as a #3 pick? Thats something best left alone.

Whatever, we should agree to disagree, as this arguing will go nowhere.

Man, that signature makes me hungry....
