OPEN THREAD: Game #1 - Warriors vs Lakers

FSNWarriors

Warriors (W-L): 0-0

Lakers (W-L): 1-0

Time: 7:30PM PST tip off

It begins. After going 5 - 1 in the preseason, the Warriors return to the Arena for their opening game. And who better to test ourselves against than the Los Angeles Lakers, a team who we lost against in every meeting during last year's regular season? Don't be fooled by the lack of Kobe tonight; the Lakers just came off a pretty decent comeback against the Suns. Shutting Odom down will be a big part of this game tonight.
Now is the time of Nellie. Let's see what you got!

Vegas Odds: Golden State favored by 6 ½ points. (Looks like Vegas has faith!)

GSoM Prediction: Warriors by 5.

Make sure to drop your vote for who you think will win in the Comments. If you're watching or listening near a computer, post any comments you have during the game right here.

OPENING NIGHT BABY!!!!

Update: For those unable to watch the game, here's the Live Boxscore

Update 2: Warriors lose 98-110

Recap coming... stay tuned!

when did Brand get traded to the Lakers
shutting down Brand shouldn't be a problem tonight...as a matter of fact I'll bet a million dollars that he won't score 1pt. against the W's tonight.
Just give you a hard time, i think you probably meant to say Odom and yes that will be the entire game plan...stop Lamar. He is all they have right now.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Maybe I'm a Masochist.........
......But my hopes are high, and hot damn, I'm ready for another season! Here's to staying   injury free, and smacking down the Kobe-less Lakers.

from the horse's mouth
It's all about tonight!

Actually, not 100% - it's all about the next 20:

Nelson: "You can pretty well judge a team after 20 games or so," he said. "If we're not good after 20 games, we're gonna struggle. If we're good after 20, we'll have a shot."

Which corresponds exactly to the analysis earlier on GSoM by many contributors who've said that any realistic shot at 2007 playoffs resides in the first couple weeks of this gift of a schedule.

Opening Game....
I paid $200+ for tickets to this game (plain $80 seats) and I'm ready to see the W's pick up a big 110-104 win in Don Nelson season debut....

by mightymadskillz on Nov 1, 2006 2:23 PM PST reply actions

good luck...
I'm as optimistic as the next Warriors fan, but the Lakers will win by at least 10 tonight. Odom will abuse Dunleavy and Bynum will abuse Murphy.

J-Rich
...and if J-Rich doesn't play, then it will be worse than that.

by jrich23 on Nov 1, 2006 2:30 PM PST up reply actions

ehhh
I'll give you Odom over Suckleavy but I can't see Bynum abusing Murphy. This kid just doesnt know how to play that game yet and Murphy's bball IQ will win the battle over Bynum's size. Brains vs brawns, mind over matter....or something like that.

It'll always be the Arena
...just like it will always be Candlestick park!

by Hash on Nov 1, 2006 2:48 PM PST reply actions

Glad "The Arena" name is gone
Candlestick was classic. Jack Murphy (The Murph) in SD was classic. Wrigley Field. Yankee Stadium. Those are names that stick and you shouldn't replace, but "The Arena"? That's like calling a baseball field, The Ballpark or a football stadium, The Stadium. No, generic names do not work. It's hopefully a new era, and the ties to the arena and it's long long playoff drough need to go. I like "The Oracle" even though I don't like the company. And it may not be the greatest name, but it's a step up over The Arena.

by Fantasy Junkie on Nov 1, 2006 3:30 PM PST reply actions

san diego
yeah "the murph" was like a cozy home. and of course that became expanded and became the the "Q"...qualcom....

also dont forget "the sports arena" on sports arena blvd...were the old san diego clips used to play. If you verture those hallowed walls you can see they did have some history there.... jimi hendrix, the beatles....last indoor concert i believe.... just before ending it all with candlestick.

and we now have cox arena as well as petco park

Prediction...
Should be a high scoring affair. I predict the Warriors win in a nail biter on a last second 3 by Anthony Roberson. The final score: 732-731. Nellie likes to run.

Seriously, Warriors win in by 8, 115-107. Go back to LA.

by CoachBarry on Nov 1, 2006 3:44 PM PST reply actions

Lay the Points!!
I'll take 6.5 and put 2 units on the Oakland Warriors, home at the Oracle. I think Odom and Bynum (picked him up because of last night's performance) will get theirs. But the W's will outrun, outwit, outlast, outplay. Even if J-Rich isn't there I'm banking on an easy Warrior win because of Nellie ball and a back to back game for the Lakers should slow them down tonight.

by j richmark on Nov 1, 2006 3:48 PM PST reply actions

Warriors Baby!!
Its a long season but I look forward to the new Nellie era.

Tonight, I say emotion carries the Warriors to victory by 4, 110-106, with Baron and Dunleavy combining for 45.

Lakers, I was impressed with Odom and Bynum last night but I don't think they repeat tonight.

The arena is quiet as hell.
Its eerie. They might of toned it down purposely. But if anyone listening to it can tell me that that's how the crowd sounds in the Oracle, then that's crazy. The Ford Center is 10x louder when announcing the scrubbiest scrub. I sure hope they toned it down.

On a happier sidenote, Adonal is looking very stylish in his suit. Wheres his applause?

Lots of Zone
Nellie's playing a lot of zone, more than the 20% he said he'd play. After getting killed on the inside, I'm glad he switched to the zone.

The last 5 minutes of the half, Ike, Biedrins, and Murphy were all on the floor. I think Nelson sees his team's problems in the post.

CHRIS DUDLEY CAN SHOOT BETTER THAN THIS!!!!!!!!

Another
missed layup. Another missed layup.

Lets go to practice and shoot layups for 7 hours straight.

Bad matchup
Nothing to be incredibly discouraged about in this game.  The Lakers consistantly hand it to us because they don't allow many fast break opportunities/easy buckets.  The 3rd quarter foul trouble was a death blow as it kept the game to a half court laker style game, inside of the wide open full throttle Warrior style.  Better days are ahead.

by bigrobbieb on Nov 1, 2006 9:56 PM PST reply actions

True
But what worries me is that there's no Kwame, no Mihm, and no Kobe. Odom only had to play 21 minutes and the Lakers have pretty much dominated this game in the 2nd half.

Heh
"GSoM does not condone watching the Warriors getting whopped on at the cost of academic performance."

Whatever. The Warriors are kind of important. ;)

I have to see how the Warriors looked this year.

for next game i guess. but hey, imagin the chewing out these guys are gonna get from nelson. hes here to prove this aint last years team, and i think theyll come back with a new look next game. I also really gotta give it to laker d. they really contained the fast break

Make sure the kids are asleep
Cause this game is a bad horror movie for Warriors Nation.

Arr
we're losing to Kobeless Lakers, missing layups, at home, and some Rick Fox look-a-like is having a great performance.

It's the new ball!

by Zorgon on Nov 1, 2006 9:59 PM PST reply actions

u did it!
nice pckon the over/under 150 posts and u pickedover.

Too bad
the three votes for the Lakers to win was predicted correctly.

by O'Bryant. He killed our run.

Back to back posessions to POB ?
When Pietrus was wide open waiting for the pass?

by back2back51s on Nov 1, 2006 10:09 PM PST reply actions

Blow. It. Up.
Playoff team? Yeah, other than the fact that we can't shoot, shoot free throws, pass, or defend to save our lives. Woohoo! Greg Oden, here we come!!!...

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 1, 2006 10:09 PM PST reply actions

He did it again
why didn't nelson put in someone else?

Stupid inexperienced moves by Roberson and O'Bryant killed this game.

by Zorgon on Nov 1, 2006 10:09 PM PST reply actions

81 to go
It's only game 1 and only 1 loss.

by Fantasy Junkie on Nov 1, 2006 10:11 PM PST reply actions

This is
the same team as last year. And no, not the early in the season one, the late in the season one. Without the interior defense. (FOYLE!!!!!!!!!!!)

boo
Maaaaaaan. I wanted to claim UNDEFEATED!

I do to
I hate all lakers, but for some reason i really hate turiaf and vuyasich or however u spell that fruitcakes name. Oh yeah I really really hate Kobe.
I love 2 tell tha truth, but I'm such a Good Liar

I can't hate him
He's got a lot of heart.  This was the first time he's played like this.  Not bad for a guy that had a heart transplant not too long ago.
J.cob -greatest accomplishment: coming up with the Golden State of Mind name.

Coach!
Coach Nelson, show us your Coach of the Year skills!

by Yoyo on Nov 1, 2006 10:14 PM PST reply actions

hmm.... YES!!!!
GREG ODENNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!

=( the only bright spot in tonight's game was Monta. The kid can ball. You KNOW it's sad when the Jack Daniels shot of the game was by Odom... how painful it is to be a warriors fan...

by ZombieWarrior on Nov 1, 2006 10:14 PM PST reply actions

llamalimbo1 I FEEL YA
yea i was watchin turiaf toward the end, he thought he wuz hella good, showboating and stuff. he sucks

by bayareawarriors on Nov 1, 2006 10:15 PM PST reply actions

omg
interior defense from foyle?! are you kidding me biendris and digou didnt play that bad.  I mean yeah they made Turiaf look like Pau Gasol but then if Foyle was playing defense then he would make him look like Oscar Robinson.  That was a sad game.

-make freethrows
-make opened 3 pointers
-stop fouling
-stop losing

This is a Kobeless laker team and we were suppose to win this game?  Im scared to play the Blazers

by djchuckdeez on Nov 1, 2006 10:16 PM PST reply actions

No
Foyle would make them look like someone on a JV high school team.

by Zorgon on Nov 1, 2006 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe
this season can be the reverse of last season.

Do bad in the beginning, then make a comeback. Sounds good.

by Zorgon on Nov 1, 2006 10:16 PM PST reply actions

Or maybe
We can be consistent for once and put together a nice full season of total, unmitigated suckage. Then we could get a Top 3 pick instead of dwelling eternally in #8-11 hell. One can hope...

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 1, 2006 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

rhythm
i think that having played last night gave the lakers some advantage in terms of rhythm. remember guys, the key is 20 games then we can judge them...

by wander7 on Nov 1, 2006 10:17 PM PST reply actions

Yeah,
I guess there is a reason ABC doesn't broadcast until Christmas.

by Zorgon on Nov 1, 2006 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

haha...yeah
by that time i'll be home from cowtown aka Davis so i can watch the damn games without greedy ars NBA blocking the game because the games are not sold out...

by wander7 on Nov 1, 2006 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

Rhythm, my eye
They had to fly here coming off a hard-fought game against the run-and-gun Suns. We were tanned, rested, and ready. They were without their best player. Other than Odom, this was a team of borderline scrubs and benchwarmers. The game shouldn't even have been close.

Oh yeah, it wasn't close.

Blow. It. Up.

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 1, 2006 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

uh
they did look very tired with the amount of time I was able to watch them play...I also noticed the same baron pounding the ball and waiting for the shot clock to go down...same o same o

by wander7 on Nov 1, 2006 11:59 PM PST up reply actions

Another good thing from the game
Besides Montas play, Biedrins D..  i though Pietrus showed great restraint on his shot selection./...clerly Nellie has gotten through to him about jacking up three's and off balance stuff.

by boogielew on Nov 1, 2006 11:35 PM PST reply actions

Definitely
I thought the same thing about MP2's shot selection. It was a big improvement.

by Atma Brother ONE on Nov 1, 2006 11:48 PM PST up reply actions

Lakers D
Maybe I missed something, but it looked like the Lakers got back on D rather quickly and thus stopped the W's running strategy for most of the game.  Did I miss something?
