Around SBN: Holy War Week Brings out the Worst in Fans

Give Nellie Some Time!

Calm down. Calm down.

I understand how everyone feels. Opening night. A new beginning after going 7-1. I was very disappointed also. I went to bed after the 3rd quarter, which I never did last year. The deja vu of last season's worst play was very difficult to watch.

The team reverted to their worst play of last year. Like somebody said, Monty was probably thinking, "Hey! I could have done that!"

Dun and MP were almost invisible, just like last year. There was no running game evident. 3PT misses abounded. 65% FT. I could go on, but why?

However. Big however.

It takes time to turn a team around. I have coached many years myself, and anyone else who has coached knows it takes time to rebuild a program.

One big difference was Nellie's comments after the game. He roasted BD and Dun, along with the entire team play. That never happened the past few years. It is exactly what any winning coach would do.

To turn around a losing program requires confrontations, because it's easier to lose. Winning takes much more commitment and effort.

This game was a wake up call for the players. Nellie and his staff have done about everything they could do in a few months. The fans were great, as always.

It's on the players now.

Don't worry, Nellie won't let up. He will insist on excellence or he will sit them on the bench.

Give it some time. Be prepared for some confrontations with players. It happens on all championship teams.

We have much more talent than we showed. The players just have to adjust to the new system and play up to and above their potential. It will happen.

There were some bright spots. Monta looked awesome, solid, and for real. Troy looked really comfortable inside, especially on offense. Andris looked scary inside and almost unstoppable.

If. I know, big if. But if we had made FT's and a reasonable % of 3PT, we would have won easily. JRich was definately rusty. He'll get back in his groove.

Give it some time. It will mesh one way or another. Every spot is open for whoever wants to take it. The players know it. Nellie could care less about PT and salaries. He makes players earn minutes. I wouldn't want to be in that practice session today!

Let's get ready for Friday!

Good points as always pineriver. I'd also add that it's on Mullin. These players don't fit and just aren't good enough to win in the NBA. We already knew that, but let's hope Mullin is convinced that bringing back a coaching legend isn't the only move that needs to be made.

Then
how did we go 12-6 last year out of the gate Atma? How did we narrowly by the skin of our teeth lose about 20 games? This team is grand.

The start
A lot of weak teams and home games padded that early record.

Talent's a major problem here. They are at best a first round knockout.

But I think
we're in a step. First we need to do well with this roster (first round knockout) and then, say, the Raptors are all "I want a piece of that pie" and get Baron Davis for T.J. Ford.(Just an example.) I mean, if we start to go back and rebuild right now, its going to take EVEN LONGER to get to the playoffs, or even that Oh-so-sweet NBA Championship. Teams dont rebuild by getting a couple of great draft picks and BOOMing to the top. Jordan spent all of the 80s trying to get the champinship. We need to do it gradually. And giving up on the roster now-isn't the answer.

very good points
you make some very good points here pineriver. It was a really disappointing night on many levels for W's fans. But, if they cut down on the 3's and make some free throws they probably would have won that game. I'm expecting a better showing tomorrow night from a couple of these guys.
By the way this free throw thing is getting a bit ridiculous isn't it? MAKE SOME FREE THROWS!

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Put the ball in the basket

They don't need to cut down on the threes, they need to MAKE the threes!  The way LA was defending was a perfect chance to three them to death.
Our guys look like they need to loosen up and enjoy the game? maybe nellie's a pain in the ass to play for and he's destroyed their spirit? I don't see them smiling much out there. And what's up with this freethrow business? Even Murphy who was pretty good last season looks like he's all out of whack now? Do you think the management was playing a huge joke on us and the real team will show up tonight??

Easier said than done
We don't have shooters on our team. Period. Well, maybe Roberson but come on....the only one who gets a pass IMO from opening night is Murphy because i'm sure it's got to be hard to play with that mask on your face when your not used to it. Give him some time and his outside shot should come around, but all in all we are not a shooting team so we need to take way fewer. No more 20+ a night ever.

there's more than one
former/current coach in the crowd, and while it takes time to reconstruct from the f-u-b-a-r moves, some of those (many?) belong to Mullin and it's high time he is held accountable. Nelson can't make chicken salad or soup or whatever out of well, whatever Mullin has given him. My confidence in Nelson's desire to go out on a high note far out weighs my confidence that Mullin will get his act together - Nelson's history with rosters is our hope. Mullin's situation is not all that different than Zeke's in NY - it just isn't public. The only move left after not making any roster moves and changing his first choice of coach is for the GM to go. As for giving it more time, well, after 12 years  it's time NOW.
