GSoM Q&A with Tim Kawakami 11/15/06 (Part 1 of 5)

Golden State of Mind friend Tim Kawakami did another great Q&A with us last week. It's always fun to talk Warriors and Bay Area sports with Tim because he always has a fresh, witty perspective. Make sure to make Tim's blog Talking Points with Tim Kawakami a daily stop. Also, make sure to check out his work in the San Jose Mercury. Tim's always got the latest scoop on the Bay Area sports scene and some great insights. Warriors Nation is lucky to have Tim covering the Warriors.

Here's Part I of our Q&A with the other parts to follow in the next few days...

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Golden State of Mind: Baron Davis is off to a great start this season and was recently in the running for NBA Player of the Week honors. Do you think this is the BD Warriors fans are going to see this year or do you think it's a mirage?

Tim Kawakami: This is the Baron Davis we'll see if he stays healthy, I'm pretty sure. But that healthy part is probably a 50-50 or 40-60 proposition, at best, especially the way Nelson is grinding him through 40-minute plus games once or twice a week. I really do credit Monta Ellis for a lot of this and I know Nelson does, too. If you play Ellis alongside Baron, then Davis doesn't have to defend the tough point guards (how much do you think that saved his legs vs. Chris Paul, do you think?), doesn't have to initiate the offense until the fourth quarter and has another real finisher to feed in the open court.

That's why I don't think we're going to see Jason Richardson at guard for a long time. He's obviously gimpy, still. That's part of it. But Richardson, even healthy, doesn't take any pressure off of Baron. He doesn't bring it up. He sure can't defend the point. Another of 1,000 things we can bang our heads about Montgomery: Playing Monta at the point makes Baron better and keeps him fresher. No brainer!

Golden State of Mind: Monta Ellis is turning some heads in the NBA and quickly becoming a Bay Area favorite. What kind of player do you project Monta to be after 3 or 4 years in this league? Also, do you foresee the Warriors having any trouble extending his contract after this season?

Tim Kawakami: Forget about three or four years from now. He's an impact player right now for exactly the reasons we thought last year--he can defend the point and he can get to the lane and finish. Interesting that I just finished saying how much he's helping Baron. He's also Baron's replacement at point guard, I don't think there's any question. Nelson saw that right away. If you could find a big two (or if Jason gets healthy and starts playing D) to pair with Monta, there's your backcourt for the next five to seven years to match up with Shaun Livingston, Kobe, Barbosa, Devin Harris and the rest of the West.

And I think the Warriors can re-sign him--they're the franchise that got so screwed by the rules involving Gilbert Arenas so they better get the break of the rule-change that allows them to match any offer to the median NBA salary and limits any other team to only offering Ellis, a second-round pick last year, the median salary. See how that works? If the Warriors want him, they keep him. But they will have to pay him.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Stay tuned for the rest of Tim's second Q&A with us...

i wonder
when tim thinks monta would surpass baron.  i definately agree that one day monta ellis might be the guy for the warriors, but a healthy baron is arguebly the best point gaurd in the league especially now.  he is "unstopable" as steve kerr would say.  but then again steve kerr hated baron and the warriors right before the season started and now he jumps on the warrior bandwagon like hes a warrior expert and is was on baron's nuts during that sacramento game and oh yeah he's always liked mike dunleavy except now lol anyway.... haha  ummm yeah cuz im pretty sure we have baron on contract for a while.  i see monta and baron being the backcourt for a while and one day maybe in 3-4 years monta is the man.  unless that is baron continues to be plagued with injuries then idk.  i wonder where j-rich fits in with this.  i definately want to see jrich healthy again it hurts me to see him just shooting jumpers and not being able to attack the rim that often.  anyway... go warriors im having a blast this season ive been so excited.

JRich fits
Remember with Nellie there's always room for 3 guards on the floor at the same time.

True
Monta is a force already. Its true that teams are starting to respect him. Just gotta keep dishing the ball around and keep everybody guessing.

Part 1 of 5?
Stretching this out a little bit, Atma?  How bout more morsels?  I need more breakdown while the going's are good.  I'm feeling great about the team,  but my sf-native friends and family are not believers yet.  Can't you and Tim share more insight  on why we're going to beat the Suns tonight?  I've tasted the KoolAid, and it is blue!

yeah
just post all 5 parts!  Tim already said his piece on here is probably outdated.  it'll just get more outdated as you post each part in 5 parts!

The Reasoning Behind 5 parts
I wanted to try something new. I thought stretching it out to 5 parts would give you all more time and space for some great in-depth discussion. I also thought it would give Tim a chance to elaborate and follow up on anything on his Talking Points Blog.

Let's see how it goes this time. If it looks better with 2 parts, we'll do that next time. You know us- we're always down to try new things and improve this site. We welcome everyone's suggestions especially on our little "experiments".

May be awhile:
From Contra Costa Times
"Notes: Davis was examined by team doctors at the Warriors headquarters on Sunday, and the diagnosis of a strained rib muscle on his right side did not change. Davis, who did not undergo any diagnostic tests, was termed by a team spokesman to be "questionable to doubtful" for tonight's contest against the Phoenix Suns. Although initial reports from teammates and the club said that Davis caught an elbow in his side during Saturday's win over the Seattle SuperSonics, it's now thought that the injury occurred when he twisted his body the wrong way and felt a twinge of pain."

crazy
these injuries are starting to pile up! I guess thats the trade-off for playing hard and getting W's. Well, hopefully Monta can come up big again, and Nash will sit out as well.

it'll be interesting
No Nash...No Baron, that pretty much cancels each other out.
Pietrus will have to stick the Matrix and that should be the key matchup. If he can keep Marion under wraps the W's should be fine.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Sure, but. . . .
Keeping Marion under wraps is a pretty big test for the W's -- who never have been able to keep that guy from going off on 'em.  I agree that MP has the best shot, but don't be surprised to see a bit of Dun on him, too -- unless Nellie needs him to defend the bigger fours and fives.  Could be a tough night for the guys.  At least they're at home.
