Recap: Warriors 102, Blazers 89- The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Golden State Warriors have their first regular season win under coach Nellie for 2006. It came against what Atma Brother calls a "college" team, the Trailblazers. I'll take it, though it wasn't very pretty. The Warriors decided to play a quarter of basketball because the first three were pitiful! Personally, I believe it's a start of things to come, but tonight showed that we still have a long way to go to become an elite team.
The Good: I always like to start with the positives and the biggest one tonight was the W. Not for Warriors, but for win! We needed a win to give us hope after a horrific loss to the Kobe-less Lakers on Wednesday. Pietrus a.k.a Pietri (a fan behind us kept calling him that) was a monSTAR! His 16 points and 10 rebounds were nice, but they didn't fully capture his intensity and freakish athletic ability that we saw in person. Soaring a full head over everyone else, Pietri was able to pull down impressive rebounds and kept pushing the ball forward playing Nellie-Ball. Monta was a crowd favorite zipping by the Portland defense and Baron had a quiet yet effective 19 points and 9 assists. The team really came together in the fourth quarter. Let's hope this carries till tomorrow's game.

This is where we found Pietri hanging out most of the night!
The Bad: So I bought into the whole Dunleavy at point guard idea yesterday, but after today's game I'd scratch that idea as fast as I would scratch an Eva Longoria itch! Trust me. It was FUGLY. I usually don't like to jump on the Dunleavy Hate-Wagon, but I have to say he was not the right fit to bring the ball up the court. We saw Dunleavy walk the ball up the court wasting time and slowing the game down way too many times. It did not seem like there was any rhythm. I'd be surprised if Nellie sticks with Dunleavy at the point again tomorrow, but maybe Dun just needs more time? To his credit he did have a solid 4th quarter ending with 14 points.
The Ugly: Quarter #1 was Ugly. Quarter #2 was Ugly. Quarter #3 was pretty ugly. The Warriors have not found their game yet and it will take a while for them to discover it. JRich is still obviously hurt and not as explosive. He probably won't be in game shape until next month. Nellie was forced to try four or five different lineups tonight. Pietri, Ike and Monta off the bench really helped dig our starting lineup out of a hole.

When are we going to see more of this?
All in all it was a fun game and I am positive about the season. We have a ton of work to do, but we wouldn't be Warriors fans if we weren't a little skeptical.

My Thoughts from Seeing the Game in Person
Quickies
- The Warriors were getting dominated inside by Zack Randolph. Very, very soft
- Brandon Roy looked very solid, but then again he didn't have a 100% JRich pushing him on the defensive end
- JRich looks very rusty scoring-wise, but I like his unselfish attitude and smarts. He knew his usual scoring wasn't there, so he helped out in other ways- 5 dimes and 5 boards.
- BD didn't look so hot in the early going, but really came on strong at the end. Smart aggressive play, fantastic passes, and great energy on defense creating those 2 turnovers
- TMurph honestly looks like he's trying to be very aggressive and take it to the hole more than settling for jumpers. Problem is he couldn't finish. It seemed like he got nervous on the easy lay-ins.
- A Foyle sighting!- and it wasn't me shooting FT's (see preview/ open thread)
- Dunleavy was absolutely awful for the 1st 3 quarters of the game. Several dumb mistakes (3 traveling violations and he fouled a jump shooter- something that will get you benched in middle school). He was getting heckled like no other (haha, and it wasn't me- I thought he was going to have a good game). It was glaringly obvious that Dunleavy was too slow to run the point. He really slowed the team down tonight.
- It was a little weird, but Dunleavy seemed to be complaining at Monta and Baron during 2 seperate occasions in the game. Both Monta and BD seemed to completely ignore him- I don't know what that's all about tho.
- As YaoButtaMing noted MP2 was a pleasure to watch. He was supremely agrressive and brought the energy. If he keeps playing like this he's either going to be a starter or be in serious contention for 6th man of the year. I'm very happy to see him rebounding like that. He's fully capable of being an excellent rebounder.
- If you blink you will miss Monta- he's that fast. He'll miss the easy lay-ins and dunks sometimes, because he's going at hyper-speed 27-7. Monta's gotta work on his jumper too. Also, he's a crowd favorite.
- Biedrins was his usual foul machine self, but actually showed me some new moves and athleticism. Nice to see that he's actually worked on his game. Every time he shot a free throw the PR announcer in the arena told that kids under 13 to close their eyes- it just THAT ugly.
- I like Ike. He's looking better and less lost. Ike was really trying on the defensive side although he got away with a HUGE goaltend that everyone was cracking up about. I was shocked that he only made 2 of 5 FT's tho.
- Barnes needs more playing time. In the first 3 quarters were really could have used his athleticism and toughness.

OK
Example: With just over three minutes to go, W's up 10, but Portland has just scored. Think back to last year, cuz this is precisely when the guys start to fall apart. We'd have BD pounding the ball, time running down and then either a botched pick'n'roll or a wild BD three. Bottom line is we'd lose. And we've all seen that too many times.
But last night we saw something different. BD off the ball. (Yeah!) Pitch it in to Dunleavy at the top of the key. He quickly spots BD under the basket and fires a pass thru two TB's to get it there. No other W makes that pass. BD lays it in. Game effectively over. On to garbage time.
I loved that play for obvious reasons -- since it made the most of TEAM talents. And it's based on motion, motion, motion. They can run this kind of play all night, if need be, with a moving offense geared to quick, sharp passes. BD (indeed, the team) NEEDS someone else who can pass well, and pass back to him a la last night. And while Dun didn't have a great game at point -- tho he hit 50% of his shots -- his play in the crunch (with BD finishing) made a big difference. Recognize it; appreciate it. It's the kind of change this team needs.
Finally, I don't want to say you made it up, but I saw no hint of Dun saying anything to BD or Monta that was being shunned or annoyed. Kind of reminds me of that silly report a while back with some nut complaining Dun looked like he was getting into a club without having to wait in line. Big deal! (Do you think BD would have been any different? Seriously?)
There's enough to criticize here -- about everyone on this team -- without having to resort to cheap shots. (Sort of like those totally unsupported -- though endlessly repeated -- comments that Dun was "calling out" teammates last year when he simply said the guys needed to focus on team play, which is what we all -- including Nelson -- know only too well.) This comment was just pure speculation. I mean, what's the point? Let's focus on the play, please.
Otherwise, good points made in the post-game commentary.

Def in agreement on principle
I'm def with you in that's the kind of offense I like watching, but I don't think Dun's the key to making that happen (hopefully I'm wrong) and I'm still not convinced that BD finishing is his strong point (hopefully I'm wrong on that too).
I like BD at the top of the key with JRich, Monta, or MP2 slashing. We'll see though. I think we gotta give these guys a few more games to adjust.

I like BD at the top of the key
I agree, Baron's more likley to get hurt going hard to the basket than he is playing point. Baron can pass better than Dunleavey so might as well let someone else do the interior work? Baron seems to have a good connection with biedrins, JRich, and monta so those four plus a rotation in the PF spot might be the ideal once Jason is healthy?

You made me realize
You know we never talk about this, but this is a really poor passing team outside of Baron. Haha, you just had to make it worse for us Warriors fans (kidding).

Much Better
Now we need to figure out how to score from the set, breaks are nice but they are not the whole game. Too bad we can't play the lakers every game till we work out an offense that can score against them! I feel sorry for biedrins when he has to shoot a freethrow, he needs to work out something more comfortable and fluid whatever it might be?
Bottom line, I'd like to see more close-ups of the warriors girls! What's wrong with the camera men? or are they camera women??

Definitely
Sorry I didn't mean to imply that everyone wasn't positive. Baron, Ike, and MP2 all looked happy after the Warriors came up big late in the 3rd/ 4th. Biedrins looked really excited too. I think BD and Biedrins have some good chemistry.
Haha, I tried man! I really did try to take some pics, but my point and shoot camera just isn't good enough.
You all know I'm up on the hoops/ hip hop fashion, so I'll give my 2 cents: the Warrriors girls' outfits just weren't that fly yesterday. They must've busted out the same white/ blue (weird colors for the Warriors girls) outfits like 3 times. They were so fitted last season. What happened?!

Tomight is Critical
Derek Fisher averaged 13.3 points for us and played in all 82 games last year. Who will guard him?
Forward Andrei Kirilenko is multi-purpose and wil be hard to stop - will MP2 be assigned to him?
Forward Carlos Boozer has had 2 monster games. Will he own the GSW? Magic-Ball says "Definitely" becasue he'll have
Center Mehmet Okur at his side. Will Foyle, Andris or Ike be guarding him and if so then then who covers Boozer? A: Murphy.

Dunleavy's ball handling

victory
The judges all voted in favor of the GSW. I was a little worried that some judges might not value the points as strongly as others and award the victory to Portland, but my worries were childish.
When I was a child in the backyard of the yard where hoops took place I would watch my brother and his friends play basketball. Sometimes I would run on the court and try to steal the ball, but when I would try and dribble the ball away I'd always travel or double dribble and have to turn the ball back over. My brother would pretend not to know me. Sometimes he would say, "Look kid, I don't know what you're doing here or why you keep cheering for me by saying, `Yah! Brother! Score Another!" but you're going to have to go home if you continue trying to steal the ball.
Just then Dad pulled into the yard and got out of the car.
"Hello Son," said Dad.
"Hello Dad," said my brother.
"Hello Father," I said.
Dad just looked at me as he stood l up out of the car. Dad just stood there looking at me as he held onto the top of the open door. I just kept smiling, waiting for Dad to return my `Hello'. He never did.
"So, how many points have you scored, son?" asked my father of my brother.
"I'm not keeping track really."
"Let's finish up the game," said one of my brother's friends. I think his name was Andy and he had orange hair. He also had a nose. That's all I can really remember about him. I just picture the orange hair and the nose. I can't even envision what his arms look like. His nose wasn't even memorable or big.
"Okay," said my brother. His voice was fading in the distance. I was on my way.
"That little shit stole the ball again," yelled someone.
I had. Now I was running away, dribbling as well as I ever had. I think I'm going to make it. Just me and the ball. Bounce, bounce, bounce. I can't take my eyes of this beautiful new friend. I was going to make it. My first career steal. On the back of my rookie card it'll say, "Mark had his first career steal at age seven when he stole the basketball from a game between his brother and friends." This line will be followed by, "Though we've found no record of Mark having a brother we find it hard to believe that a person would make up such a scenario or a person."
As my brother, or as I'm finding out from reading the back of my rookie card the person who I thought was my brother, chased me down I could see my dreams of the great steal wavering. Wind began to rattle this vision as it hung from the laundry line out back. The more time that slipped away, the stronger the hurricane brewed. The wind picked up violently; I could feel my ex-brother steps behind me. The laundry sheet of my dream was now holding onto the line with the help of only one clothespin. I looked back to see hands reaching. My only hope was to make it to the ditch. I would be able to swim for safety. I leaped. A strong gust knocked off the last clothespin. A hand swiped at my ankle. I flew through the air hoping to land with a splash into the muddy sewage river along the road. Sheer determination held the dream sheet to the line as it flapped with no clothespins.
When I crashed into the trashcans my world changed. My dream of completing the steal blew away in the hurricane and wouldn't be found again until a month later when I was looking in my desk at school for the red crayon and found the sheet stuffed in the very back. It was completely shredded and torn. Most would view this dream as a lost cause. I had hope. I took up knitting.
As I lay in the pile of trash instead of the mucky swash of the ditch I finally saw the light. It was finally apparent why my brother couldn't have been my brother. The crash must have knocked something loose in my head, but now I could see my pale shivering skin for what it was worth. I was white. My ex-brother was black. It was from this point on that I would finally see the world for what it was: two sides opposed. A world of darkness and great feats versus a world of supposed pureness that represented all the ways in which you could swindle a young athletic Blackman into dribbling money straight to your bank account.
Andy wasn't even the redhead that I remember with the nose. He had no hair. His scalp was scalped, but in a willingly way. He wore a red bandana. His nose stood centered between two eyes. This new Andy was more than the old one had ever been. He had eyes.
My new ex-black brother stood above me. I slowly picked myself up. Memories of my rookie card and blurb of seven-year-old thievery faded.
Times were better when I had a black brother. After losing him I struggled through school and often found myself on the wrong side of chants that went something like this, "Mark doesn't have a brother and his mom is a one eyed mother." My mom has two eyes, but the chants still hurt especially when I was trying to add 3 +5 up at the blackboard. This may be a reason why I can't count past seven. Doctors tell me it's a psychological thing.
Anyway, the reason I tell you this story is because Baron Davis reminds me a lot of my black ex-brother. Baron Davis is a Warrior, maybe not literally, but he plays on the GSW. It's nice to meet you Baron. I'm Mark. Please excuse me if I ever try and steal the ball from you in a backyard game of hoops. Oh yeah, next time you see me, we won't be strangers.
