Around SBN: Diego Sanchez and the Dangers of Fame in MMA

Dear J-Rich,

Whatsup brotha, this is a big fan of yours, GSDubZ here.  If you notice below, my signature icon is a picture of you hitting that big 3 last year in Dallas, and under the caption it says "poor in wins, rich in our hearts".  Well now, we are getting those wins, and reaching the point last year where our season tanked.  The only thing is, this season is different, and we know we will not tank (knock on wood).  However, as we finally do become rich in wins, it seems that you, the Rich heart of our team, are having the toughest season of your career.  With your name being mentioned in trades, and your inability to be YOURSELF since Nellie has arrived, I can understand how things have become frustrating.  You had a tough decision to make on your knee surgery, but you did the right thing.  You tried to rush back a little early, but you did it with the best of intentions and on some bad advice.  You broke your hand in a blowout loss, but you were just starting to get your rhythm back and it was just unlucky... don't blame yourself.  I want you to know that your fans, the true Warrior fans, have got your back.  We've repped you for years when we had nothing else to rep about, and we're not about to give up on you.  I have supported you in the past, I support you tonight, and I will support you in the future, especially the next couple of months while you rehab that hand and take this "blessing in disguise" as time to finish healing your knee.  Come March, when playoffs are around the corner, I have faith that you will give us that extra boost to get us where we need to be.  I see the dedication you have put in for your team, especially when no one else believed in us, and I know for damn sure you won't stop bringing that dedication now. So J.R., if you read this, just know, your real fans still got NUTHIN' but love for you.  Waaaaaaaaaaaarrrioooooors 4 life.

1,
GSDubZ

what a loser body he has. He should trade. What does a good body go for these days? Nothing he can't afford.

shame on you zorgon
wat the hell is rong wit you? this dude is the one of best to ever a wear a bolt. i dont care what you say (ahem,...sleepy freud) but jrich is a truly incredible basketball player. imagine if he had had a supporting cast. and now, when it finally looks like hes getting one, his body starts to give way. if his body is just going through some tough luck, then i hope you can be back soon jrich. if its starting to deteriorate its cuz hes been carrying a friggin heavy load, hell hes been carrying a franchise on his back for five damn years. dont ever badmouth jrich cuz without him the dubs got NOTHING!!!! think back to last year, when BD got hurt and every1 was calling for his trade, and now that hes been tearing up the league its "all hail BD!!!"
this is essentially the same thing, only jrich has proven hes a baller and he shouldnt have to earn it all again

Uhhhh
It was a joke. I just think that if his heart (and brain) was put in a more reliable body, it could be much better. I think he's a great player. Just remarking on how it always seems to break somehow.

No offense man, he has shared the load with Adonal for the past 5 years for this franchise, it has been hard.

(That was a joke too. We all know he's carried it himself.)

My ears are burning!
How did my name get dragged into this tawdry debate? I've got nothing but love for JRich. I might not call him "truly incredible," but he's a great player when healthy, and, more than that, just an incredibly easy guy to like. He's easily "one of the best to wear a bolt" -- though since the bolt is only a few years old, that's not much of a superlative. Isn't Ladainian Tomlinson the "best player currently wearing the bolt"?

Anyway, get well soon JRich, and Happy New Year to all at GSoM (here in Japan it's already 2007!)

Aw, c'mon
"Have it in for you" is a little harsh, no? " Sometimes enjoy giving you a little good-natured crap" is more apt. And you always seem to handle it pretty well. Honestly, I always enjoy reading your posts/diaries, even if I often disagree with them. Outside of Baumerworld, you probably have the most distinctive voice on this site.

Resolution for '07: I'll try not to nitpick your posts so much.

Happy New Year.

Back to JR
He is one of the people in the NBA who do not deserve half the crap that he has been put through, right up there with Lamar Odom.  Jason cares about winning for all the right reasons, not because it makes him look good, but because he feels that he has a responsibility to the fans to deliver.  Let me say that more than any single individual in the Golden State Warriors organization, JR has delivered.

Zorgon is the J-Rich of GSoM
When things weren't going good, when we lose games and we were dissappointed, or when you post something cool and no one is showing you any love, or if you make a good argument about a serious issues and no one is there to back you up when you're right, Zorgon will come in to save the day.  I don't care if he's probably a 30 year old white dude out of Oklahoma, but hands down,
ZORGON IS MY FAVORITE GSoM MEMBER AND HELPED ME GET OVER MY FEAR OF FOYLE AND ACTUALLY START APPRECIATING ADONAL FOR HIS STRENGTHS.

I salute you my man.

FEAR OF FOYLE?
Ha Ha,  Fear of foyle!  Never heard that one before, I've heard of fear of Artest  or shaq but never Adonal!!

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jan 1, 2007 9:48 AM PST up reply actions

His fear
of Foyle on the floor at all perhaps?

Alot of people turn sour when he hits the floor, even if we're up, even if he stops a sure chance at a made basket by Yao, even if he dunks on 'Zo, etc. Which is a little bit asinine if you ask me, since he wasn't in charge of how much he was paid- yet he is the consumate pro that comes into the game when called upon- and does his job as asked of him.

Zorgon's presence is probably 50% of why I come here to GSoM! (baumer dropped some points for his disapear-o act)

Excellent blog
I know there are many JRich fans out there, and I'm proud to announce that I am one of them. The man can flat out play and is very underrated. But I certainly wish him a speedy and effective recovery cuz the Warriors do need him down the stretch. Also, ease up on Zorgon. We need people like him to support Foyle.

Zorgs, are you gonna be at the arena tonight? Wait, do you live in OKC or Memphis? I forget...Anyway, could you put up a big sign for me that reads "GSoM, Unstoppable Baby"...???

by MANUTEs BOLs on Jan 2, 2007 1:08 PM PST reply actions

You're All Blind
JRich is DEFINITELY NOT a good player and CERTAINLY NOT A GREAT PLAYER!!!

He makes one winning shot and he can dunk (ooh!!). But can he dribble, can he pass, can he play D, can he shoot (40%+)????

If you answered YES to any of these questions then you haven't been watching Warrior basketball with your eyes - maybe your heart.

He has NEVER done any of those things on a consistent basis in his ENTIRE CAREER.

The worst thing is is that he knows it himself. But, even more pathetic than that is his fake pain. Did everybody notice (in last week's game) before he got that great 'loop pass for a dunk that he could barely make up & down the court. Also, when he shoots free throws, he almost always acts as though there is something in his eyes or faking pain.

LISTEN CAREFULLY PEOPLE: if you are a good shooter, you don't shoot free throws below 80%. It doesn't happen; it just doesn't happen.

BTW, Jordan couldn't do any of these things either, but at least he learned how to compensate for his short comings. WHEN will JRich learn. Even Coach Nellie has lost patience.

Go Warriors

by cfrazie88 on Jan 3, 2007 9:56 AM PST reply actions

Wow frazie
such bold statements from you. Hmmm, I thought he's made a few winning shots but I could be wrong. Not even a good player?!?! OK, I've heard it all now. Lord come and get me!

Funny how how "left out" his rebounding strengths. But of course the world revolves around you so no need to mention that.

RE: his FG%, his career before this year is .4332. But if you include this year's FG%, his career FG percentage is .432. According to my math knowledge, that puts him over the 40% mark.

Oh and also defensively, it appears to me that while he was recovering from his injuries this year, he concentrated more on defense. If you have been watching this year's Warriors games, you should have noticed better defensive efforts from him (i.e. help defense, steals, swats, etc). Oh, don't forget his rebounding.

Lastly, his "faking" of his injury. Are you a stand-up comedian or what?

Anyway, gotta get back to work.

by MANUTEs BOLs on Jan 3, 2007 2:21 PM PST reply actions

Ps BOLs
I didn't mention the rebounding and especially the defense (though I admit slightly better than years past) as everybody knows; they both are not nearly as good (certainly not consistent enough) as they ought to be.

FAKING: You bet! I've coached for 20+ years and I know a faker when I see one!!

He might be a great human being (and that's the most important of all), but the serious lack of basic skills is killing us.

Having a solid base (knowing the fundementals) is tantamount to success - both in life as well as in sports.

Go Warriors

you've coached for 20 years
thanks for sharing that, what a horrible feeling it must be to do something for 20 years and go nowhere with it.   ill be sure to always listen to the opposite of whatever u say.

by gsdubz on Jan 4, 2007 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

Coached for 20+ Years . . .
100% for free to disadvantage students and adults. Other than that I was an extremely successful programmer for 27 years. Oh, yeah. I've gone no where it except Africa, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, Europe. That's right I haven't been to outer space yet!

You made a statement about my success without having a single fact. I thought we were here to give comments not to blindly judge and/or ridicule.

Peace & Go Warriors!!!!

PS, I did not he is faking all of his injuries. I was stating that if you carefully watch JRich you will notice that he can be hobbled on one play then make a miraculous dunk on the next. Everybody that I watch the games with seem to notice this. In fact, we like it when he acts hurt as he usually plays better. This has been a pattern. Sadly though, it usually masks deficiencies.

by cfrazie88 on Jan 4, 2007 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

Frazie
I didn't mention the rebounding and especially the defense (though I admit slightly better than years past)

So you feel these numbers are "slightly" better this year given his health is less than 100%. If he was 100%, chances are these numbers would even be better.

I still can't believe you think he's faking his injuries. I don't mean to disrespect you or anything but your 20+ years of coaching experience means nothing to me. I can also see whenever a player "fakes" his injury. I played years of basketball and football and I do see some guys pretend they're hurt. But when you watch JRich, it pains me to look at him. His numbers tell you the truth...if the man wasn't hurt, he'd be back to playing solid basketball.

but the serious lack of basic skills is killing us.

You're talking as if he's Shawn Bradley, Gheorge Muresan or some guy playing in the pre-1980s. Believe me, it takes more than luck to convert on 3 pointers or 18 foot jumpers. Basic skills = non-athletic players who get eaten up by faster, athletic players. The NBA world has changed from stiffs to lightening quick and ultra-athletic players. Do you see anymore Dave Cowens outside of the Brian Cardinals, et al in today's NBA? They've all become extinct for a good reason!

Nice try though!

Look at Biedrins' (especially on 2 & 3 days rest and vs Seattle; our next victim). Hopefully, the 'rest' factor will prevail: (if not cleary showing, vs Sea (55%) on 2day (74%) on 3day (80%)
