MOCK DRAFTS 2006

Warriors Nation- It's almost time for our playoffs... the 2006 NBA Draft! We'll have our second annual live coverage of the draft at Golden State of Mind (look back through the archives of Golden State Warriors BLOG), but let's get things started with the mock drafts.

As DJ Fuzzy Logic and I were talking about earlier today- Mock Drafts are like horoscopes or US Weekly for hoops fans, especially the fans of the hypeless losers. They're more addictive than gossip about Oprah's diet strategies!

Make sure to post a link to any mock draft you see floating on the web in this diary.

Bookmark this diary! It's going to be the phattest Warriors Mock Draft compilation on the web!

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

9. Warriors--Andrea Bargnani 6-11, 240, power forward, Italy

He's one of the better talents of the draft. Though he's similar to Troy Murphy, he would be a good choice to allow Murphy to go in trade for a needed piece.

Chad Ford- ESPN
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2006/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=MockDraf t-050623

You can tell good ol' Chad doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to the Warriors:

Golden State
Randy Foye- PG
The skinny: The Warriors don't have any glaring needs. With Baron Davis' health always in question, having a big time experienced combo guard like Foye could be a gem. Besides, at this point, he's the best player on the board.

Huh? The Warriors have GLARING holes at Small Forward and Center. They a GLARING hole for a big man who can score and defend down low in the post. A backup point guard who doesn't try to impersonate Kobe Bryant would also be nice.

My Mock Draft and Contest
For the record, Atma invited me to post my mock draft here -- I'm not trolling for hits :-P

Here's my mock draft from May 24th:

And my mock draft contest, the prize being an autographed ticket by Ike Diogu and Adonal Foyle:

Tiago Splitter is not even in the draft, and THIS is considered a good mock draft?  Wow.

Excuse the bad joke...
I thought Tiago split from this year's draft.

Patrick O'Bryant
When O'Bryant went for 28 points against Aaron Gray and Pittsburgh in the NCAA tournament, you knew he would be staying in the draft. He's got some athleticism and has the makings of a solid postup game. The Warriors need some low-post offense to complement their superior perimeter game.

Marcus Williams
I know, they have Baron Davis to play point. They also need a center like Shelden Williams or Patrick O'Bryant. But Baron Davis has been injury prone and Williams looks too valuable to pass.

Hoops Hype

Patrick O'Bryant
Tall and incredibly long mid-major center who saw his stock explode after an excellent NCAA tournament run. Shows intriguing raw skills on both the offensive and defensive ends, but is still a year or two away. Has good mobility, a fantastic frame and a huge upside. Motor and willingness to hustle and do the little things are big question marks.

Their comparison is definitely going to scare 99% of Warriors Nation.

The O'Bryant
and Williams pick predictions are scaring me.

Much'd rather have Carney.

Maybe
As part of a package deal, it's plausible, but just to move up I doubt it. Draft gurus have been forecasting a crapshoot draft.

9. GOLDEN ST.: J.J. Redick, 6'4, 190, Duke

This will be seen as a reach to some, but REDICK is an offensive wunderkind and the Warriors have struggled from beyond the 3-point line for years. This pick could finally address their long-range futility. Redick is underrated despite scoring 26.8 PPG last season against top talent. He could be brought off the bench and will force teams to account for his presence when he is on the floor.

We do not need another guard, so we can forget Foye. We need a SF, but Carney is somewhat erratic. Assuming these players are on the board, I'd take Rudy Gay, Saer Sene, or Thabo.

Real GM Mock 2.0
http://realgm.com/src_feature_article/94/20060519/realgm_mock_draft_version_20/
9. Golden State Warriors

Team needs: C, different personnel, SF

Reasons: Everything went bad for Golden State last year. Baron Davis could not avoid injuries. Troy Murphy could not avoid the 3-point line. Adonal Foyle could not avoid foul trouble. Jason Richardson could not avoid being a great player on a bad team. A fastbreak team has to rebound, but Head Coach Mike Montgomery has not made things any simpler. It can be everyone's fault in one way or another, but all signs point to a complete reshuffle of the organization and it begins in the draft.

They will most likely go after a center because Foyle played poorly all season and Andris Biedrins, as much as I like him, is still a few more years away from being a solid rebounder and pick & roll player, a center they were trying to mold him into. Another option is small forward, which would mean the end of the Mickael Pietrus-era in Golden State. There wasn't ever one, but for a former Lottery pick, things went south fast, as the defensive minded play he showed under Eric Musselman disappeared with Monty. Lucky for him, there are options out there, including the Logo in Memphis that has always coveted him.

They draft: Patrick O'Bryant, C, Bradley, So

Why?: In this situation, the Warriors need a future center to go along with Biedrins and Ike Diogu. O'Bryant has the tools to be an effective starter and showed the fact that, at just 19, he can play against NBA caliber centers. Most centers aren't athletically gifted like O'Bryant and this will only benefit him in the future. He still has a lot of growing to do, but he has the potential to be a solid all-around center in the NBA. Think Chris Mihm but better sooner.

Another option here would be the high-flying Rodney Carney. If Carney were selected here, it would not only mean the end of Pietrus but J-Rich as well. Why J-Rich? He is one of three Warriors that they can get a lot in return. The other two being, and this is just my opinion, Diogu and Monta Ellis, two of their rookies from last season. Richardson should not be expendable, but if they want a complete shakeup, why not start with your cornerstone like so many teams seem to do?

Why not Baron + JRich + Carney? If Baron's in shape, that Run 'n Gun.

9. Golden State Warriors - Tyrus Thomas, PF, LSU. The Matt Leinart Award for "Inexplicable Drop that is Somewhat Explicable at the Time" goes to Tyrus, who just a few weeks ago was considered a safe bet to be the No. 1 overall pick. Jason Richardson has been quoted in Bay Area newspapers with his opinion that the Warriors need a shot blocker/tough guy in the paint, and one thing Thomas can do is send shots into the sixth row.

I don't know about Tyrus Thomas dropping to the Warriors at the 9th spot. Xmas only happens once a year!

Morrison
Morrison reminds me of Chris Mullin in that he can shoot it pretty well, and capable of scoring a bunch of different ways despite below-average athleticism.

Brandon Roy reminds me a bit of Ron Mercer, when people though Mercer might be really good.

This really is a weak draft, and the Warriors would be wise to move the pick to a team that ends up getting starstruck by a player during workouts.

Baron, Murphy, Pietrus, and the #1 pick for Garnett.  Who's with me?!!

Still annoyed that we drafted Tod Fuller

9. Golden State Warriors - Rudy Gay, SF, UConn. Mike Dunleavy isn't really getting it done at the three - perhaps he'd be better off playing a Mike Miller-type role off the bench. Meanwhile, the trio of B-Diddy, J-Rich and Rudy could be a poor man's Kidd/Vince/Jefferson. If the draft were based on athletic ability and potential alone, Gay would likely be the top pick, but has to answer questions about his passion for the game and killer instinct.

If Baron, JRich, and Gay are a poor man's Kidd/ Vince/ RJ, then Mike Dunleavy is welfare poor man's Mike Miller.

we need him ... why you ask?

because we have the lowest fg percentage EVER! he can only help.

JJ Red is (not) the man
Are you kidding? He's just a jump shooter. Very little else to his offensive game.

The Warriors have one of the worst defenses in the league. Let's just say that with this JJ there aren't going to be many Good Times for the Warriors defense.

9. Golden State Warriors
Patrick O'Bryant, C, Bradley
Rationale: The Warriors spent two picks on big men last year (Ike Diogu and Chris Taft), but neither of them have center size. O'Bryant is climbing draft boards after a strong tourney showing and because the pool lacks seven-footers.
Also Considered: Rodney Carney

Golden State Warriors
-Team Needs: SF, PF, C
Pick:
Cedric Simmons-PF/C-North Carolina State

With some great talent at the guard positions, the Warriors will look to a big man here, and Simmons is the guy. He is a shot blocker, much like current Warrior Adonal Foyle, but his athleticism is what will make him a top 10 selection. For a team on the rise like the Warriors, Simmons could finally be the inside presence they have been lacking to compete in the West.

9. Golden State Warriors - Rodney Carney, SF, Memphis. The Warriors have two need areas: center and small forward. The best center available at this spot is Bradley sophomore Patrick O'Bryant, but Golden State (and their suffering fans) don't need another project, which even O'Bryant calls himself. Carney is the best athlete in the draft and ready to play now. If everyone (read: Baron Davis) stays healthy, the Warriors could have a Kidd/Vince/Jefferson-esque trio on their hands with Davis/J-Rich/Carney.

9. Golden State Warriors

Franchise: Patrick O'Bryant - GS needs some help at center (unless you think the re-signing of Adonal Foyle was a great idea) and O'Bryant is a legit 7 footer with an athletic defensive presence that Chris Taft can only dream of.

Howland: Patrick O'Bryant. Sure there's a ton of money invested in Foyle, but they need someone to develop next to Biedrins. Adding O'Bryant will give the Warriors another weapon and a big one at that. Although he is a project GS won't pass on the 7 footer. Foye would be a great "value pick" but with B-Diddy and D-Fish locked in there O'Bryant is the choice.

Chapman: Randy Foye - I thought long and hard about O'Bryant, but I just don't see it. Backcourt help is a must and Foye can play both 1 and 2. He's darn good as well. I'm going to buck Franchise, Howland and Chad Ford here and say that the Warriors take the Nova product here. As an aside, how come whenever I type "Warriors", the awful Lloyd Banks track comes into my head?

9. Golden State-Rodney Carney (9): The City is saying the Warriors should take Patrick O'Bryant. I still think Carney would be a great fit, to be honest. The Warriors could use an upgrade over Mike Dunleavy, and Carney would certainly fit the bill. Ideally, Golden State would trade some of their pieces for a big superstar, but in lieu of that, they should pick Carney.

9. Golden State - J.J. Redick: I know that he's had a horrible week and that there are now quesetions about his back but he's the best pure shooter in this Draft. The one thing the Warriors are lackin is a legit perimeter shooter to keep opposing defenses honest and Redick would provide that.. Last week I wrote that if I were a GM I'd take Redick over Morrison and I'm still sticking by that claim.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jun 18, 2006 9:13 AM PDT   0 recs

Warriors aren't drafting a "big man"
A lot of you guys are trippin on the Warriors draft. Warriors players will look like this if they don't make any trades. Bynum, Fisher, Richardson, Ellis, Davis, Dunleavy, Zarko, Murphy, Diogu, Foyle, Biedrins, Taft and look for PIetrus and Cheaney to be most likely gone. (possibly Bynum). If you look at that list you see a handful of Power Forwards and Centers. Although their not the best of all low-post players they are still on the team and get paid. If you look at the weakets link on the list you will notice that it is the Small Forward position. That would most likely mean that they will draft a Small Forward or trade the big men to draft a "big man." They won't draft a center or power forward period They will draft a small forward and your guys are trippin if you think that they will draft a point guard.

My Pick would be: Rodney Carney

by minw00 on Jun 19, 2006 8:11 AM PDT   0 recs

Me too
I'm sick of big man projects. If Carney is half as good as the scouting reports say, he'll be able to start immediately and contribute at the small forward spot.
