Those Warrior Girls

Your post intrigued me; here at the HBN, we welcome any comments, critiques about the Warriors and their extended family (i.e. The Warriors Girls, thunder, the service workers who sell us overpriced refreshments). The HBN respects its audience (except the dunleavy jr. fans who still think he has `potential'--the dude is freakin 26!) and we look forward to engaging with other Warrior nation fans across the bay, California, the U.S. and around the world (I think there might be 2 fans in Estonia).  In fact, we were more than excited that someone also cares as much as we do about the illustrious Warrior girls.  

I agree with your point that music for the routines are extremely horrible.  Its so bad you probably wouldn't even hear this junk at a middle school dance in the `burbs and stixs of the Midwest.  But are we to blame the victims?  The recent surge in the NBA has been to make the culture as straight-laced, sanitized, and completely un-groovy as possible (I would like to call it the de-`black'ening of basketball).  Am I the only one that has noticed that since nipplegate and Artest vs. Auburn Hills, Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers has become the soundtrack for the playoffs if not for the NBA at large?  Whatever happened to the non-culturally threatening but highly anticipated Destiny's Child half-time performances, which has since been replaced with John Legend (one of my fave. Performers, but not ideal for sporting events)? What's up with that?  Although the playoffs has been super exciting with a new generation of ballers, the recent discourse on ESPN and by the NBA, as I've written about earlier, has been to make sure the NBA is not TOO exciting where it will give kids new/wrong ideas of and for rebellion.  When has light rock for suckas complementary to highlights of tight dunks?  I largely believe the problem of poor music is larger than the problems with the choreographers or the dancers; having cheesy ass music that won't potentially upset middle-brow America seems to be the agenda since they seem to largely be their audience.  Notice how geeky and uncoordinated kids and dads are shown on the jumbotron dancing to Baja Men's "Who let the dogs out?"  I don't think you'll hear those jams anywhere at a SF night clubs for anyone between the ages of 18-40.  I am a firm believing that the music choices and general image changes the NBA has been making (removing the sports hosiery, forcing players to wear suits, etc), are all connected and interrelated; Stern is blatantly forcing/coercing the NBA to conform to it's middle brow American audience's corny `family' values.

I also agree that the gear they wear is borderline HO.  But it seems like there is a thin line between being tastefully sexy and being considered a `slut', as with the whole lawsuit against the Detroit Pistons for their swimsuit calendar.  I think that incident put sports enthusiasts face to face with the inherent sexualizing of women in male sports and the contradictory expectations of these women to be hot but not too ho.  In addition, when your team sucks like the Warriors do, the cheerleaders do a good job of distracting us from what these team needs: wins and cheaper food!  Are Warrior girls are to blame for being asked to wear those outfits?  Maybe the question should be that why are women being asked to wear those outfits at games in the first place.

Your concerns are not blasphemous! But I think they are definitely legitimate concerns that Warriors management needs to take up for it's long time fans like us.  But if you had your choice, what type of dance styles would you prefer the team to do?  Are there any teams that have dancers that do a better job of riling up the fans (in a non sexual way)?

And nekkidness isn't always a bonus.  An outfit can be more appealing and show less skin at the same time.  It all depends on the fit and style, more than sq inches of fabric.

Take for example, one of the girls on the new MAKING THE BAND 3 series was an ex-Blazer cheerleader (for 6 years too) and in some of the clips, they showed her singing AND dancing.  What if the Warriors did something like that?
