Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

REPORT CARD: Zarko Cabarkapa

Zarko Cabarkapa. Funny looking Euro, funny looking bball game. Contends for the best name on the Warriors. How fun is it to say Zarko or Cabarkapa or just Zarko Cabarkapa all at once, and then three times in a row? Anyways, he's eligible for a contract extension, but Mullin would have to be an idiot to give it to him. Interesting to see if he'll be used as trade bait this year as an expiring contract.

Now that's a good lookin' man. (Photo: hoopsvibe.com)

That's the Zarko I know. (Photo: newsday.com)

A Zarko highlight on YouTube?! The title said "Zarko Cabarkapa Dunk" and I just assumed he was getting dunked on. But after watching the clip he actually throws it down emphatically and gets fouled. Richard Jefferson, you just got posterized (I'm ordering my Zarko poster right now).

Overall Grade: D

Atma Brother #1 (Grade: D)
Honestly, Zarko didn't get fair chance to play this past season even though Mike Dunleavy struggled big time and Mickael Pietrus played terrible without Baron. If Claritin can help cure his allergies to defense, Zarko might be able to become a formidable role player in this league. If not, then well you can bet your last Cabarkapa that the Warriors will sign him to a ridiculous long term contract.

DJ Fuzzylogic (Grade: D-)
Expendable.  Zarko places his best when the Warriors are blowing some other team out.  Although his height and athleticism are intriguing, his erratic play and incessant desire to be a point guard make him and Pietrus the worst decision making combo east of the Knicks.

Fantasy Junkie (Grade: D)
I just don't understand the upside people say this guy has saying he's a big man who can dribble and shoot. After watching him, yes he is a big man who can dribble and shoot, he just doesn't do it that well. He's slow, plays no defense and looks lost on the court. At the beginning of the year season ticket holder orientation, Nate Thurmond told me he was going to breakout (along with Dun Dun). The only breaking out he did was on his face. I look forward to Nate's breakout candidates next year.

Hash (Grade: D+)
Zarko didn't really get his fair time in the limelight this season, but from what little I saw, I was not impressed. From what I can tell from what I saw, he does not look as though he has the ability to become a solid contributor. But since he has a dope ass hard to pronounce name, I gave him a D PLUS.

YaoButtaMing (Grade: D)
Who's wearing their Cabarkapa? Hopefully not the warriors next season!

What's your grade for Zarko?

I didn't even know he could jump high enough to dunk.

Zarko is one of those guys that comes in at garbage time, hits like three jumpers in a row and amazes you.  You start to wonder for a second if maybe he really can play.  Then you come to your senses and realize that he does nothing else besides take jumpers and if he isn't hitting all of them he is easily the worst guy on the floor.  I'm not even sure he would contribute on a really good team.

(Hopefully Jim Barnett isn't reading this thread and sobbing uncontrollably.)

Poor zarko....

Well theres always next year x12

Zarko's the MAN!!!
^^^^The lamest bunch of so-called Warriors fans I've ever seen.

Firstly, Zarko is most effective driving to the hoop and he did it very effectively last season, not shoot jumpers.  Second, Zarko has the biggest hands on the team and with his height is a great Vlade Divac-like passer, palming the ball and dropping it to Biedrins or a cutter for easy layups.  Third, Zarko is a great ball-handler for a nearly 7-footer and numerous times would grab a rebound and take it coast-to-coast not to mention his two step drives to the bucket finger rolls a la George Gervin.

Best of all, toward the end of the season his rebounding and toughness improved and while defense won't ever be his strong suit he represents a great change of pace to Diogu at the PF spot.  Don't diss on Zarko "Napolean Dynamite" Cabarkapa!!!

You must be related Zarko
His moves to the hoop are NOTHING to get excited about. He has moderately impressive ball-handeling skills for a near-7-footer, but he does NOT play like a near-7-footer, so it's totally negated. And he does pull up for a lot of medium range jumpers. Vlade Divac comparisons are ridiculous since he can't post-up in the paint to dish the ball off like Vlade. I agree that he did get a little tougher, but that's what all scrappy, bench-warmers do. And the size of his hands?!? Are you serious?

So, yeah... I respectfully disagree.

Please
I respect your opinion but have to disagree. First, I'm not sure how you know that Zarko has the biggest hands on the team, but I'm not sure why that's going to make him a great passer. Passing is about vision and touch, not big hands. I'm not sure Zarko has the vision nor the touch to be a great post passer. He also averaged 0.3 assists to 0.6 turnovers for a horrible 1-2 assist to turnover ratio. Second, he may be a good ball handler for a big man, but he is by no means a great ball handler. He's not like Dirk or CWebb (in his prime) where they initiate the offense off of a break. I'd rather have him outlet the ball to a guard and fill a lane. Third, and most importantly, what has he done? Although he hasn't had a Dunleavy-like chance to shine, in his limited time he did not impress me with the occasional nice play and prolonged stretches of nothing. I think our low grade for him is warranted by his lack of production. Maybe it's Monty, maybe not, but 3.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 8.4 minutes per game does not show me anything.

What grade do you think he should get?

Just wanted to add that my man CWebb can't jump and can't defend anymore, but he can still pass with the best of them. If only Don Nelson knew what he had back in 93/94.

By the way, Dirk doesn't impress me with his passing at 2.5 a game career average. The Mavs just don't like to pass. It's a bunch of isolations and 1-on-1's that Avery plans ahead of time to exploit mismatches. Dirk's passing ability is on par with Antawn Jamison and Mike Dunleavy's.

93 'til Infinity: The Warriors' playoff drought?

Give some love to the ZarkStar!!!
I can't give him a grade based on lack of assignments comlpleted.  But I did like the life-sized paper mache' bust of himself, complete with basketball-palming kung-fu grip!

In all seriousness he was pretty deep on the bench and with Diogu playing so well there just wasn't much time to justify giving him.

I think you have to give him a pass/fail grade and I give him a pass for at least one more season.  If Murphy gets traded we'll see him putting in lots more minutes and he'll really shine.

The Shining?
I don't know if Zarko will ever shine in the NBA, but seriously man- you need a Zarko image signature! If HE ever does blow up, we'll definitely give you the credit for scouting him out.

Here's how to get an image signature: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2006/7/7/211733/9156

It's like a sense of humor for Warrior fans- everyone should have one!
