Warriors Strike Out: Al Harrington Traded to the Indiana Pacers

Looks like the Warriors struck out again. Al Harrington is reportedly headed back to the Indiana Pacers after being rented by the Atlanta Hawks for two seasons. The Pacers' crafty move to obtain a $7.5 million trade exception as part of losing Peja Stojakovic to the Hornets, who wanted to block the Warriors from improving, probably helped seal the deal. It looks like there's a group conspiracy to punk Chris and Rod. The exact details of the trade are supposed to emerge tomorrow morning.

Here's some of the Con's of the Warriors missing out on Al Harrington:

  • The Warriors missed out on a chance to add some much needed athleticism to their forward tandem. Troy Murphy is solid, but pairing him with Mike Dunleavy is a recipe for disaster.
  • Unless Mickael Pietrus comes to training camp with a newfound understanding of the game or Coach Montgomery stops handing out undeserved playing time, Mike Dunleavy is still the starting small forward for the Warriors.
  • Contrary to what Warriors' (mis)management would like you to believe, Troy Murphy and his remaining 5 years at $50 million are not easy to move. They paid over market value for TMurph two seasons ago. Not Adonal Foyle or Mike Dunleavy bad, but Derek Fisher bad.
  • With a starting frontline of Jermaine O'Neal, Al Harrington, and Danny Granger, the Pacers are highly athletic at the 3-4-5 spots and not too far away from making some noise in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. They don't have as big of a reason to trade O'Neal as they did at the beginning of this summer. Look for Jermaine, who's Bad!, to stay with the Pacers this season and not be dealt. They aren't in rebuilding mode anymore.
  • If the only move the Warriors make this offseason is trading Derek Fisher to the Jazz (who by the way has yet to report to Utah), then the Warriors have actually gotten worse this offseason. Maybe they're tanking it for Yi?

Here's some of the Pro's of the Warriors missing out on Al Harrington:
  • A trade for Al would most likely require the Warriors to part with Troy Murphy. Murphy is the team's only legitimate rebounding force. Double-double guys don't grow on trees and the Warriors shouldn't trade Troy for the sake of making a move, especially when they are already such a terrible rebounding team.
  • Al Harrington is not worth the 50-60 million that the Warriors would have to dish out to obtain him. He's a solid player. A slightly above average starter, but not a star.
  • Harrington shot 69% and 67% from the charity stripe the past 2 seasons. The Warriors are already terrible in that area and Harrington would just make them that much worse.
  • Avoiding false hope. Even with Al Harrington the Warriors were still not going to be a Western Conference contender. With him they could maybe, maybe sneak by for the 8th spot.
  • The Warriors don't really seem to have a clue. Why's that a Pro you say? They're remarkably consistent!
  • And finally, more guaranteed Funleavy Foto Fun...

Warrior fans can still see this happen twice a year.

What are the other Pro's and Con's of the Warriors missing out on Al Harrington?

Damn.
Since the Warriors couldn't pull off this Harrington deal... They needa pull off something.. anything. I have a feeling that they're working towards AI and Chris Wilcox now. And I'm not sure if that'll be enough to end this playoff drought.

Getting Ready for Yi Time!
You are correct by referring to Chris & Rod as (mis)management. One of the main reasons they can't make a decent trade this summer is because of their inept and inflated signings last summer.

Just to put things in perspective, compare what Bryan Colangelo has done already in Toronto:

(Quote) The remake of the Raptors roster has been impressive, and very thorough, as new president and general manager Bryan Colangelo tries to turn a perennial Eastern Conference doormat into at least a playoff squad.

When training camp opens in October, the Raptors are likely to have nine new players in uniform, more depth than they've had in years and -- finally -- some legitimate competition for playing time.
The free agency period sent the Raptors looking to every corner of the world. They signed American Anthony Parker, a former first-round pick who has been with Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv for five seasons; Spain's Jorge Garbajosa is expected to sign as a free agent any day, and they've taken John Salmons away from the Philadelphia 76ers in a sign-and-trade deal for a 2007 second-round pick. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Salmons agreed to a five-year, $23 million deal.

Now, no one knows for sure how this will all shake out once the team gets on the court, chemistry being such a key ingredient to NBA success. But along with the addition of first-round draft pick Andrea Bargnani, point guard T.J. Ford and center Rasho Nesterovic, there are very few remnants of the club that went 27-55 a season ago.

The cornerstone, of course, is power forward Chris Bosh, who has signed a three-year contract extension with a player option on a fourth season. It's the new "flavor of the month" deal that allows Bosh to maximize future earning potential, just as the same kind of deal will do for Cleveland's LeBron James and Miami's Dwyane Wade. Having the 21-year-old Bosh locked up anchors the squad for years to come.

Coach Sam Mitchell, entering the final year of his contract, will now have more weapons at his disposal, and it will be interesting to see how he handles a team with more talent than any he's ever coached. (End Quote)

That's what an efficient GM can do, and he did it by himself, compared to the GSW who are carrying both Chris & Rod on the payroll at million plus salaries.

Remember Bryan Colangelo? He's the guy who brought Steve Nash to Phoenix.

I agree that if all Chris and Rod can accomplish this summer is to lose Fish, unquestionably the top bench PG in the NBA, along with letting Troy and MP know that they are considered trade bait, it may already be Yi Time!

Very true
I think the difference is that Colangelo learned the ropes from his dad in Phoenix, while Mullin learned the ropes from Gary St. Jean and Higgins failed miserably with Michael Jordan in Washington.

Most of the time when I write (mis)management I'm referring to Cohan and Rowell. Mullin and Higgins are well intenioned good guys by all acounts. They're just incompetent. Cohan and Rowell are incompetent and money hungry. A very deadly combination.

It's Nothing Personal
I understand your point, and I agree Chris and Rod seem like good ol' boys. However, is that any reason for the GSW to keep paying them millions to get incompetent results?

Chris make a grandiose statement last season that if he didn't produce a playoff team, he would take the blame and he should be fired.

Well, how long are we supposed to wait?

Chris also was quoted as telling Fish that he liked him and that trading him was nothing personal.

Well, I would like a championship-level GM on the GSW team.

Nothing personal.

We agree

Oh no- I'm with you 100%. Monty, Mullin, and Higgins should all be shown the door. None of them should have been hired in the first place.

Warrior fans deserve a championship squad on the floor. I will never tell Warriors Nation to be patient. They should be demanding of high results from the Warriors organization. The Bay Area is the 4th largest sports market and home to the greatest fans!

Keep Mullin 'Cause
Mullin's to blame for the current roster (I think Cohan wanted Monty) but IMHO Chris is learning and getting better so let's not restart the team again.   He's not made any panicked, dumb moves so far and is a decent judge of talent.

The team is young so player improvement is expected - demanded.

Chris' has probably called out Baron and others in private for not working hard enough and caring -- goodness knows Mullin walked the talk as a player.

Let's let him work the players and see how the season progresses -- someone's team is going to underachieve and gonna want to deal before Feb.

If the Warriors defend well in the Fall (or play the consequences for not trying) then Chris has gotten a message across.  If not, and we see 3 point shots jacked up -- I'd let Chris and Monty go before XMAS.

Better not having overpaid for Harrington
"Sometimes doing nothing is the hardest thing to do." Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown

Mullin panicked in the past and made bad decisions like over bidding for Derek Fischer. Not overpaying for Al Harrington is a positive for the GSW.

Two wrong moves don't make a right so I'm glad we didn't amke a bad move.

The trade deadline is Feb so Mullin has time to wait out and see if there's a better deal to be had later in the year.

I'm skeptical of the team chemistry but individual players could come to camp in shape and play well enough to earn their salary.  Dunleavy isn't a bad apple -- just a bad fit on a selfish playing team.

by joe sez on Jul 21, 2006 8:26 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We lucked out.
Not getting Harrington is a blessing. He didn't make the Hawks any better and he actually had a poorer +/- than the team as a whole for them.  Evaluating a player based only on how they did in on a bad team can be misleading, but he was usually in negative +/- space when he got major minutes for Indy as well.

We missed out on a tweener forward who doesn't rebound especially well, who doesn't pass especially well, is an adequate but nothing spectacular scorer who doesn't appear to make his teammates better.

Same ol Same OL'
SAME OL WARRIORS..they like being used and Harrington clearly used the Warriors to go to the Pacers.  NO free agents ever want to come here..horrible management, POOR coaching, bad players, and the cost of living and gas in the bay area is at its highest.  I am not surprised by Harrington's decision.  Year after year its the same shit..bring on the Sonics to San Jose..Warriors need some much needed competition because this franchise acts with no urgency year after year.

i agree
harrington and the hawks used the warriors. they probably never had any intention of trading for murphy, pietrus, or whoever. looks like nothing will get done this offseason. this was their best chance to make a change. i'm crossing my fingers that a major move will happen though.

OH YEA btw
OH yea..look at the Giants and A's in the bay area.    Sure they haven't won a championship for awhile..but each year they COMPETE...something the Warriors no nothing about.

by SAN JOSE Warriors on Jul 21, 2006 8:31 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Which is why we need the SJ Sonics
I swear, if we had another team in the bay area to compete for fans ... the stupid warriors management would suddenly care about producing a good team.
The warriors are probably one of the few teams in the history of sports who constantly profit year after year, but produce a sub par team!

cut everyone
they should just cut or trade everyone except POB, J-rich and baron, bring our second round draft choice over and sign a bunch of worthless free agents, get the number 1 pick and get Yi or Noah

Lipton
I have another Con: Al can't do what he's doing in the picture every day in practice instead of just twice a year. He'd probably make Dun cry.

Sigh
I can't believe i got my hopes up for a while, but i shoulda know it was coming.  Now we can look at the other great players available on the market, like portland's favorite attitude guys, darius miles and zach randolph
Well theres always next year x12

Whos Left?
If the Warriors make no other moves this offseason, maybe they can at least sign former Warrior great David Wood! By my calculations, hes only 42 years young and would add some much needed veteran leadership to this young club. There are obviously some glaring holes at the 3 and I think Wood could be a great pick up.

Any thoughts J.cob?

David Wood played like a man possessed.

Ok --
if the W's dont make a major move im going to be devastated...last year had high expectations and we failed miserably...remember when mully promised big changes this offseason? I'll take any impact player at this point.  AI sounds good..just anyone to change the dynamic of the team id be willing to part with every damn player except J-RICH..j-rich has become my favorite player simply by being a true leader on the court..hes not the most vocal guy but his work on the court proved hes a true savage..He's a superstar in everyway..part with baron but keep j.r.

peace
