Rumor: Warriors Trying to Trade for Wilcox

From Percy Allen of The Seattle Times:

According to an NBA source, Phoenix, Golden State and Sacramento have contacted Seattle to talk about trade scenarios involving Wilcox, a 23-year-old power forward, who averaged 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds in 29 games with the Sonics last season.

Look for the Sonics to ink Wilcox to the reported 3 year $24 million deal that Allen is reporting as being "imminent". It's a reasonable deal that makes sense for both sides. The Sonics aren't over-committing to a player who has only played decently in 29 meaningless games and Wilcox will be a free agent when he's 26 where he can still see a huge pay day. Chris and Rod could learn a few things about negotiating extensions from Sonics GM Rick Sund (see JB's diary Can Sund or Mario provide relief?). It's one thing to resign marginal (at best) players like Mike Dunleavy and Adonal Foyle, but to give them 5 year deals is foolish and completely unnecessary.

Chris Wilcox and Mike Dunleavy seem to have similar rebounding techniques.

Do you think Chris Wilcox is an improvement over current Warrior Power Forwards Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu?

wilcox would be a good pickup
If Wilcox's performance with the Sonics is an indication, he's likely add some wins to this team.  His performance there wasn't out of line with what he'd been doing in LA previously in more limited PT, so it's not a stretch.  He seems to know his shooting range and he seems to be able to get and maintain possessions.  I strongly suspect he can have a much more positive impact than Al Harrington would have.

Wilcox > Harrington for the Warriors
That's a good point. I think the key is not overpaying and realizing that he's not the end all solution to the Warriors' flawed roster. Just a step in the right direction.

wilcox makes sense...
If the Warriors weren't stock piling bigs.  The Warriors got how many guys who seem to desparately need experience to improve and adding Wilcox for Murph straight up doesn't seem to deal with the log jam of unskilled big man (with the exception of Ike who didn't seem to be trusted by M and M and we're not exactly sure we're handing him the reigns just yet either).  I think Wilcox is decent tho and could improve the Ws, but why add him when none of other bigs are getting the chance to play?

Avoid relying on "chance."
I'm a big believer that what someone has done in the past is more often going to predict what they'll do in the future on the court than I am that giving someone the chance to play will make them rise to the occasion.  The guys who in limited chances haven't lit the world on fire aren't going to light it on fire with more of a 'chance.'

The Warriors have a bunch of bodies at several positions who, when given the chance to play, stink.  Foyle doesn't add wins.  He didn't when he was a backup and nothing's changed with increased dependence on him. Zarko doesn't add wins.   I doubt POB will add anything this year.  Able bodies who are more likely to do something good because they have in the past are more welcome than relying on the chance that the guys who haven't done a thing will suddenly morph into real players.

Youth
Watch out for POB. He has a bad habit of getting down on himself -- that behavior can ruin a guy's confidence.  He's got to avoid bad habits-- who is going to mentor him? I am worried about his development.

We need new options by the end of this next season. By year's end, Ike has to show he can start at PF in the NBA.  Monta Ellis has to get better and stronger.  We need to see if Taft can play -- he's a tall, strong and athletic PF -- something GSW lack and, if he's ready, he can get large minutes at PF. Taft is my pick for breakout Warrior of 2006-07.

If the Class of 2005 draft progress, the Warriors will win a few more games and they'll be cost effective players or assets for future trades.

As for Pietrus, Zarko, Andris, Foyle, and Dunleavy, I'm not that hopeful.  For different reasons, none will be significantly better than last season.  Of these, Dunleavy has the most promise if used correctly.

Wilcox isnt better
than Troy Murphy in a pure comparative sense.  That being said Wilcox is a far better fit for the Warriors.  Murph makes me think SF in a PF  body with all his shooting, and trying to drive off the dribble.  Wilcox is exactly what he looks like, an athletic, strong, inside player.  He isnt spectacular, but he sure isnt going to hurt the warriors as long as we dont try something stupid to acquire him ie. trade monta, or let the sonics sign him to a Dunleavy-like deal.
Plus he check out the nickname

Well theres always next year x12

One Trade Doth Not a Playoff Team Make
I just don't have any confidence in Rod and Chris to make a clever trade that benefits the GSW.

Based on their past record, I would expect them to give away too much and sign Wilcox for much more and much longer than his ability deserves.

Finally, I think Chris Wilcox represents desperation by Rod and Chris because they know they are expected to make some trade.

If they can't get it together soon, our best move might be to trade both of them.

Nice line
One Trade Doth Not a Playoff Team Make

Maybe it's just unrealistic to expect a single trade that would single handedly vault the Warriors into the playoffs. It's a pretty big mess.

2AM decisions
GS needs to subtract one or two of the big contract drains in order to make any move, and we can't find anyone to play let's make a bad deal with anyway. And, it's getting kinda late.

The only match we can make now is the kind made at 2AM, when the lonely and the desperate look across the bar at one another and say "what the hell, why not?" Then in the morning it's "what the hell was I thinking?!"

sorry, couldn't think of a better analogy
