Rumor: Sixers Listening to Troy Murphy Package for Allen Iverson

From Jack McCaffery of the DelcoTimes:

So King is listening [to trade offers for Allen Iverson]. He listened to Boston on draft night, and was willing to broker a deal that would have cost the Sixers Iverson, but would have landed them Randy Foye from Villanova. It's been reported that he's listened to Golden State about Troy Murphy. Atlanta was mentioned. Just a hunch, but when Iverson goes, it will be to a team that wasn't even rumored at all, because that's the way those things tend to work. When it happens, though, the story won't really be where Iverson will be playing next, but where he won't be playing any more.

Either way you look at it- to set up the fun trio of AI, BD, and JRich or to set up a future trade- moving Troy Murphy for Allen Iverson is a no-brainer. Iverson is a superstar and Murphy will probably never make an All-Star team.

AI's no scrub!

Would you move Troy Murphy (see recent Report Card), the Warriors' best rebounding big man, in a package for Allen Iverson?

If Philly Wants Murphy They Can Have Him!
I would move Troy Murphy and any player not named Jason Richardson, Ike Diogu, or Monta Ellis for Allen Iverson.  If Philadelphia is willing to take a package of Troy Murphy and anyone else on the Warriors not involving the above three you'd be silly not to make the deal.  If we're able to land AI and retain Baron Davis and the "three headed monster" doesn't work out you can always flip one of them for a true SF or big.  I think after missing the playoffs for 12 years the Bay Area deserves a team that can at least make it to the playoffs and any team that has both AI and J-Rich should make it.  Ideally I'd like to give up a package of Murphy, Pietrus or Dunleavy along with Foyle and a future 1st round pick (although not 2007 because that draft is supposed to be extremely deep).  I've always thought Philadelphia could do better than that in a deal for Iverson so I'm not expecting him to land in Golden State but would be thrilled if he did.

Would I Do It?
Is that question for real? I would move every single player on this team to have a chance to watch Iverson play one season. If there was anyway to make this happen without losing Davis or Richardson, this would be the most exciting squad I've ever seen the Warriors put together, including Run-TMC.

I'm pretty sure the Warriors will never make the playoffs again so let's at least assemble a team thats fun to watch. This would do the trick.

Real question
No joke. I estimate (from comments and online talk) that there's a 60-40 split between Warrior fans who want The Answer and those who don't.

I am in..
BD, AI with J Rich (playing the 3), Ike, and center of month...I am excited about that team.

I am hoping the expiring contracts attained for the artist formally known as D Fish, are part of that package too.

Murphy, Pietrus, 4 MM in expiring, and a couple of protected picks could put us close.

Is it enough is the only question, no if.

The Warriors WILL end up being the end of me someday.

AI
If we can get AI, do it. I've suffered long enough without a true superstar. Even if he doesn't improve us, it'll be more fun winning 34 games with Iverson than winning 34 games without him. Plus if the trio doesn't work out, then just trade off one of them.

Sure he's getting older, his contract is not cap-friendly, but anytime you can get a legit superstar for a non all-star, you do the deal. Think of the excitement when Baron was acquired, now triple or quadruple that if we get AI.

Do I think it's going to happen? No, but if Mullin can pull it off I'll have a new respect for him and his staff.

the answer
I believe Fantasy Junkie summed up the matter in saying that the Warriors might not improve with AI; that his contract is not cap-friendly, i.e., would further tie up the W's already tight finances; but that he would be exciting as hell to watch.

I wouldn't wait for the predictable troubles to develop over who gets too many touches between Baron and AI; I wouldn't wait for Montgomery to lose control of both players; I wouldn't wait for the rest of the league to clue in on why AI could be more trouble than he's worth, given a situation like the W's. If we make this trade--and I think we should, as long as we can take this next step--we should IMMEDIATELY turn around and get what we really need, which is a reliable scorer (preferably with a good jump shot and decent free-throwing) who plays decent D at 3, or a great defender who is a decent shooter (think Bruce Bowen).

Watching the W's lose year after year makes us cynical, which is completely understandable. However, I believe that we have a good chance of not only making the playoffs this year but also of continuing to improve, if we fill the hole at 3.

So is AI a better player than Al Harrington? Of course, by a mile and a half. But Harrington fits our needs better at this time.

Don't Forget
I agree with everyone about AI coming to the Dubs.  It would make them a must see team and most likely a playoff team.  BUT...I want to bring up a few points that could spell disaster.  We are all high on the thoughts of 33ppg.
  1. Iverson has been playing hurt for who knows how many seasons.   It been typical warrior luck to have a superstar like Iverson decide to take a year off to heal.
  2. Although he has gotten better, #3 is notorious for stiring the shit.  Getting sent to a team like our beloved warriors could rub him the wrong way.
  3. Monte.  Iverson is likely to make him weep openly during a game.
So that's my version of devil's advocate.  I'm all for bringing him here, but its a gamble.

AI and BD on the same floor- who's got the ball?
Adding AI would make the team mentally tougher as he would be on top of everyone.  I love BD, but he is a strong personality and he'll do what he wants and will butt heads with AI.  Who's going to lead the break?  Who's going to call the plays?  Will anyone listen to Mike Montgomery?  Think Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury.  It's not always about having the best players, it is about chemistry and role players.  Iverson never wants to practice, plus he's getting older in years.  He did say that him practicing will NOT make his teammates better.  I don't agree with that.  What's Iverson going to do- drive to the basket and kick out to Baron who is shooing 3-15 from the field?

After all these years, Baron still doesn't know how to stretch before games.  I worry everytime he drives to the basket on a fastbreak, don't you?  If we had both players, then when is JRich going to get the ball?  How many minutes will Ellis play?  If we had this team, we'll have to go back to the Don Nelson days of run and gun because we have no inside scoring presence and we'll just have to try and outscore everyone.  The problem with this is now with Fisher gone, we have no real shooters on the team.  Will anyone shoot over 43%?  I can't see Iverson OR Baron in the same backcourt.  And JRich is ok as a part time SF, but not fulltime in the Western Conference.  If we were in the Eastern Conference this might work, but we have to play against bigger frontcourts in the West.

I love the Warriors and I want to see them win, but we need chemistry.  Since when is winning 34 games in a season with both Iverson and Davis considered "exciting?"

The W's Are Starting to Look Like the Knicks
I highly respect AI, but the W's definately don't need him.

He's getting old, and he's frequently injured. If C&R mortgage the W's future, they are doing it just to make more fans come to see the "AI & BD Show" and make some quick money.

Everybody with an ounce of basketball sense knows the W's would never make it to the Finals with AI & BD. It just wouldn't happen. Who would be left on the team to guard Shaq or Dirk?

If you really want to become the laughingstock (again) of the rest of the NBA and delay any real improvement, then dream on. "It's the greatest show on earth, folks! We may not win, but it'll be exciting!"

Realistically, there would be no game plan except to play street ball and run and gun. Monty wouldn't be able to control BD or AI, neither of whom is known for their coachability.

The NBA is no joke. Believe me, teams like the Bulls and the Lakers and Miami and even Toronto are already getting their ducks in a row for next season's title run.

Meanwhile, C&R just traded the only W with championship experience, great leadership ability and dedication (unlike the PG they kept), who was there for us night in and night out while C&R's franchise player sat on the bench for yet another season, for three more "projects".

Do you think it was just a coincidence that JRich had his best games with Fish at PG?

If C&R make a trade like they, they have truly sold out the W's.
