Monty Out, Nelson In

This morning around 8:45am on the Murph and Mac show on KNBR, they reported that Coach Mike Montgomery and the Warriors have reached a buyout agreement, so Monty will no longer be the head coach of the Warriors. Mark Stein is reporting that Don Nelson is the next head coach. Check out the story

Don Nelson will be named as the new coach of the Golden State Warriors this week after the Warriors agreed to terms on a buyout with Mike Montgomery.

First, the old coach. Our report card for Monty (F+) showed our dissatisfaction for what he did the past year. I'm glad they got rid of him because he was not a good NBA head coach. He didn't seem to grasp the game, the substitutions, and seemed overmatched by the opposing coach. But he was a great college coach and nationally respected for that. I wish him the best of luck, in fact, he should go back to Stanford if he wants to coach again. I'd welcome him there.

Second, the new coach. Don Nelson? The last guy to take the Warriors to the promised land returns. Apparently the rift between Cohan and Nelson wasn't big enough to prevent Nelson from returning as coach. He's a big improvement over Monty as he's proven to be successful, but he's a definite short term solution. It's like a "stop the bleeding" solution to the Warriors coaching problems. They couldn't get rid of or acquire any players, so they made the next biggest move possible. The real question is his health. Will have the same burnout problem that he had in Dallas? Let's hope not.

Do you think it was a good move to replace Monty with Nelson?

EDIT1: There's a new poll up on the right, make sure to cast your vote.

Its a start
I'm optimistic that the re-hiring of Nelly is a step in the right direction.  And if it turns out to be true, I'm even a bit surprised because I thought that Nelly and owner Chris Cohan were not on the best of term regarding Nelly's original departure from Golden State.
But anyway, the Warriors probably will improve their win total.  But I still don't think Nelson is the long term answer.  I think I would have rather seen Mario Ellie given his first shot at a NBA coaching career, or even Keith Smart.  Those two seem to have the respect of the current roster, and today's NBA players tend to have respect for their elders who have played in the league.  That being said, you can't argue with Nelson's resume over the years.

Optimistic for now.

WoooHooo!!1
I never had a problem with Monty, he tried hard, never gave up.  The players just did not commit to his way and he was doomed.  For that I fault Mullin because he needs to back up the coach and get him the players to fit the coach.

Nellie, I always enjoyed him, loved his Run TMC teams and wished we had kept him and Webber.  However much I want to see this succeed, historically the second time never ends well, just like you should never go back to an old girlfriend.

Nellie Knows Talent
This is GREAT NEWS!  Look at the situation Nellie left Dallas with.  He left the cupboard stocked with talent and groomed his successor to take over when he was ready to leave.  I wonder if he's bringing his son with him.  I hope Nelson is able to reach players like M. Dunleavy and M. Pietrus.

My I say ... OH HELL YEA!!
Am I the only one who is ecstatic? First, I think the firing of Monte is long over due. Second, apart from Stan Van Gundy I don't see anyone else who can quickly turn this team around. I agree Nelson is not the answer long term, but I don't think he is here for a long term hire. I think the Warriors and Nelly are both thinking this is a situation where they need a fantastic coach to bring these players together and for Nelly to hand this off when the time comes, just like the situation in Dallas.

No, I'm in Ecstacy too
What a smile this puts on my face.  The Montgomery tenure is over.  Cohen may have been a terrible owner, but isn't this a sign he's matured?  To welcome back a guy you ran out of town is not something a prideful, stubborn person does.  His past is dubious, but that doesn't mean he can't change.  He's let Mullin do his thing and paying some huge salaries because of it.  Now, I would have liked to see Larry Brown coach the Warriors instead of Nelson.  But, he would have clashed with Rowell and Mullin too much.  I like the idea of Nelson mentoring Elie as his replacement.  Its a hopeful day for Warriors fans.

This Was The Move That Had To Happen...
...not hiring Nellie, per se, but 86ing Monte....... a good guy for sure, and a great college coach....but as FJ said, the guy was in over his head. Sure, it's not exactly thinking outside the box (I thought  Mario Elie would have been a real inspiring choice), but this is good...they needed this more than Wilcox, Harrington, or any number of over-priced/over-rated tweeners.

The real question is, how long until Nellie has Biedrens chucking 3s!

true, the second time around is never better than the first, but the pleasures are ALWAYS still there

better than Monty
It will be sweet, we have all the personnel to have a run TMC-esque team, with Baron playing Timmy, J Rich as Mitch, and Dunleav....  oh crap.  Nevermind.  At least we'll play a fun style of basketball.

great move
hey folks, great site.
this move makes short term sense. monty was in over his head in the nba. his players were poorly prepared to play every nite.
nellie's coming in to try to stabalize the franchise and get these guys to play well together.
he's stuck with this overpaid roster for awhile, so we'll see if he can fire'em up.
at the same time he'll groom ellie for the head coaching job by giving him more responsibility,
ala avery johnson.
can't wait to see him and b.davis on the sideline...

RE: Mario Elie
I think it was a smart move to not give control of the team to Mario Elie at this point.  Bringing in Don Nelson gives Elie the chance to learn from one of the best in the game and not have immediate pressure put on him.

Great News
As a guy who was raised on Nellie and Run TMC, I think this is fantastic news.  Nellie probably adds 8-10 wins to the current roster simply by benching Democracy and putting a more cohesive five on the floor.  Plus, Nellie has a history of finding hidden gems like Mario Elie, John Starks, Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels.

If Nelson only coaches for three years before passing the baton to Mario, that's fine.

Win totals for the next three years: 41, 47, 49

Still annoyed that we drafted Tod Fuller

Great/Not So Great
Getting Monty out is great.  He had no concept, he didn't know how to substitute, he was a poor clock manager, his players got worse instead of better under him, he had no control (especially vis a vis Davis), and he had no clue about the NBA game.  Worst of all, he didn't seem to care.  Glad he's gone.
But Don Nelson? Maybe he can get BD and Dunleavy going, but I doubt it.  Nellie ran out of gas about a decade ago.  Can't see BD following his lead, anyway.  My guess is he'll just coast -- and likely won't be around at the end of the year.  I like Elie -- though his one-on-one coaching didn't seem to pan out last year -- but the inspired choice, of course, would have been Stan Van Gundy.  Well, we've learned not to expect inspiration from this group.
Still, at least Monty's gone -- and that's a vast improvement regardless of the replacement.

Replacing
monty with an empty chair probably would have been a good move.  Thats a little harsh, but Nelson will be a good thing for the team, at least for a while.  I think he can upgrade the team and the run and gun style of his old dallas will fit the defensively impaired team we have assembled
Well theres always next year x12

"Jeff George" of the Warriors??
Oakland's recycle bin should never surprise people -- first Jeff George, then Nellie...

If this is short term, then the question is: who's next coaching candidate?  Hope Mullin has a plan.  Regardless, I doubt, though, Nellie is taking this team to the playoff...

by cerev on Aug 29, 2006 11:40 AM PDT   0 recs

Kudos to Chris Mullin
A great nostalgic and smart move.  This is obviously a huge fan-pleaser.  Being Warrior fans we have romanticized the hell out of the past, and what better way to turn our doubts into hopes.
Thoughts:
  1. Nellie has been relaxing, soaking up the sun in Hawaii and is ready for a good few years as a head coach.
  2. I'll take a proven coach over a Harrington, Wilcox, or any other non allstar player.
  3. Mullin saw all the free agents pass him by and decided to pull the trigger. I can't see Nelson coming back for any other team right now.
This definitely postpones the protesting plan I was working on.

Get ready for a three headed monster!!!!!!!!!
I bet dollars to donuts that Nelly employs a three guard lineup with Monte in the starting linup or playing way more minutes than the real starter at SF. Holy moly this team is going to be fun to watch. They may play no D, but they wil be fun to watch. As for Baron Davis, as I recall, Nelly had a field day with another field general who was as brash, talented, and ballsy by the name of Hardaway. Nelly is going to make Baron the best he can be.

Great move bringing it all back to where it started. I am excited to be a warriors fan again.

Big Willie Style
Great short term move.  It's only a matter of time before Nelly goes back to Hawaii where he spends his days drinking Jack Daniels with Willie Nelson.

Gotta love this photo I found on google!

Random thought: Do they still sell Everett & Jones Barbeque at the games or am I dating myself?

by mcpherca on Aug 29, 2006 1:07 PM PDT   0 recs

YES!!!!!!!
Ahh.. at first I thought u were playin wit us. I'm so happy right now that montgomery is gone I'm going dumb. Plus Don Nelson is gonna groom tha rest of r coaches. Its so beautiful. Nelson will make richardson a national star. Hopefully though BD dont clash heads with him like Webber did.

WIZZOWZ WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!11
OMG CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!

Not really, but I really think a second round this year. Thats how much confidence I have not only in Don Nelson, but I really think our team is good enough. Short Term blah blah blah blah, but our team isn't getting any younger.

GO GO DON NELSON RANGERS!
(Warriors new name)

LARRY JOHNSON LIKES TO SLAM ARRRR!!!!

AWESOME!
Nellie will make the most of this team.  He is one of the better game coaches out there....making the most of match-ups and controlling momentum.

I can think of 7-10 losses this past year that would have been win's with Nelson's tactics.  PLUS, those victories would have created a winning atmosphere and more victories.

I think this will be a very entertaining year.  This is definitely a playoff team now.  No question.

The Situation
It's funny how Warrior fans are so optimistic. One coaching change and we're thining playoffs. We still got a ways to go...

by John Patrick on Aug 29, 2006 3:32 PM PDT   0 recs

never say die
what's the alternative: giving up on oakland?
Leon Powe could have been our next Larry Smith. Instead we have a couple more candidates for the next Joe Barry Carroll.

by OaktownWarrior on Aug 29, 2006 4:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No
I'm not saying it was a bad move, it was a great move. I'm just saying we need to iron out some other stuff before we're thinking playoffs.

Nellie back on board!
AWESOME!!

Murphy and Ike are just the type of players who tend to flourish under Nellie.

This should be good for Pietrus too.

It's a New Day!
Great to see Nellie back in action. A great coach is something this team has been missing, and it has showed. I think this could be the thing that pushes us into the playoffs. If everyone can get along and wants to win, we'll be playing postseason ball

lightning
rarely strikes twice in the same spot - but Mully can pray otherwise and obviously so do we:
  • maybe Nelson can turn Barren into Timmy
  • maybe BD-JR-MD will evolve into Run TMCII
  • maybe Mario will follow Nelson and have the same success AJ did in Dallas
  • maybe the draft luck during Nelson's tenure will repeat
Mully couldn't change the roster he'd built, needed to change the chemisty - obviously bringing back the same group was out of the question, and GS needs to sell some tix - so resurrect Nelly

I do like the $1m bonus clause. Team-success oriented bonuses used to be used widely in professional sports and deserve a second look.

BD's performance, whether Nelly or Monty coaches, will determine the course of this season.

I'll stand by my earlier prediction: firing the coach he hand picked is probably Mully's second to last major move - the last being his own.

gawd I hope I'm wrong!

by hardcore on Aug 29, 2006 5:44 PM PDT   0 recs

Let's Get Ready to Rumble
I think this is a positive move overall.

Nellie will definately have the credibility and the know-how to control BD and the other players. Everyone knows Nellie will be running the show.

Nellie will bring out the best in the players we currently have. We actually have quite a bit of under-utilized talent. I predict an All-Star year for JRich.

Nellie has to see the same potential. No way would he have come back to a team he felt had no chance of achieving.

Nellie knows the GM level also. He will be a huge help to Mully as long as he is here.

The more I think about it, the more I like it.

Best wishes to a courtside gentleman, Monty. Colleges are probably already lining up to recruit him.

Great move, Mully. You came through this summer, after all.

Welcome back, Nellie. You have a team loaded with young talent and one of the greatest group of fans in the NBA.

Are you ready for some basketball?????

Let's get ready to rumble!!!!!!!

D-J-Mike
A new nickname perhaps? If Dunleavy doesn't pan out (again), then we can hope Pietrus flourishes, then if that doesn't happen, we can always take away the M and leave Ike.

by thebigva on Aug 29, 2006 9:04 PM PDT   0 recs

Finally a move that made sense . . .
Harrington and, god forbid, Wilcox sounded like moves to just make moves. This was an upgrade to the team's weakest position. By far.
