One Million Reasons for Nellie to Take the Warriors to the Playoffs this Season

Janny Hu (check out our recent interview) for the SF Chronicle is reporting the details of Don Nelson's contract. Read this line OUT LOUD:

As part of the deal, Nelson will receive $1 million if the Warriors make the playoffs this season.

Simply marvelous! Absolutely amazing! FAB-YOU-LESS! Maybe Cohan (aka the worst owner in all of sports) is ready to actually give winning a serious try instead of just looting Warriors Nation. I never thought I'd say this, but props to Warriors owner Chris Cohan. This doesn't make up for 12 horrendous years, but it's a start.

Monty out, Nellie In- You heard it HERE on GSoM before any of the local newspapers and before tomorrow's press conference! (If you're a still little doubtful that Nellie is going to be the Warriors' new head coach by tomorrow, one of our friends within the organization basically confirmed it's true.)

I actually think the Warriors are going to start making noise and be a perenial playoff team in 2 seasons. They currently don't have enough talent to compete in the West. Nellie's a smart man too. He's knows when to tank it for a higher pick and the 2007 NBA Draft is loaded. However, he now has 1 million reasons to make the playoffs THIS season. Think Nellie and the Warriors will make the playoffs this season?

I think the Warriors can make the playoffs this season but EVERYONE needs to buy into what Nelson is selling.  The first person he needs to reach is BD because we're not going anywhere if the PG and coach aren't on the same page.  BD also needs to stay healthy.  If Nelson can get the most out of Dunleavy and Pietrus that would also be another huge step in the right direction.  Finally we never know what type of deal will be available during the season.  Who would have predicted the Speedy Claxton for Baron Davis deal a couple seasons ago?  The roster could look dramatically different by the Feb. trade deadline.  It's just nice to have some positive news about the upcoming season.  Are you now excited about the season?  I know I am!

Ric Bucher just said on ESPN...
"There wasn't a single personnel move Mullin could have made this summer that would have helped the Warriors make the playoffs.  This move does exactly that."

I'm excited.  This is gonna be fun!

Nellie's an old man
He'll have the patience to let the Baron Davis situation, and every other situation, come to him.  He's not the hot-head he once was, and he's got a million times more gravitas than respectable but wimpy Montgomery.  Mullin's praiseworthy eulogy notwithstanding, I remember seeing Monty around the Oakland City Center, and he did not look comfortable hanging with the beautiful, diverse folks downtown.  It might have been a bad day when our paths crossed, but I saw him as a deer in the headlights.

In terms of bringing the man Don Nelson to the table, though, I am most excited about his skills as aa team builder and talent scout. I love the types of folks he brought in to Dallas, and here before then - whether it's Dirk Nowitzksi or Sarunas Marciulonis or Latrell Sprewell, Tim Hardaway, Eduardo Najera or Mitch Ritchmond, I always feel like Nellie is finding the diamond in the rough.  I hope he is excited to be here.  If he does big things with us he may really lay claim to being one of the best coaches/executives ever.

There is hope!

Leon Powe could have been our next Larry Smith. Instead we have a couple more candidates for the next Joe Barry Carroll.

Mos Def....
This team has TALENT. This team has a lot mroe talent then the disparaged Warrior fans are willing to notice. This team can go to the semi-finals. This team has so much potential that will be bought out by Don Nelson, and he will have better strategies and hopefully playcalling. Year after next, year after that, if Don Nelson still coaching, CHAMPIONSHIP. Mark it down.

Nellie's the man
How about that time when he came out of the coliseum after a game with the Spurs and saw a kid in a wheelchair crying.  Turned out the kid had had a special appointment with David Robinson and afterwards two thugs had stolen his autographed poster.  It had just happened and Nellie jumped on his Harley, chased the thugs down, berated them, took the poster and brought it back to the kid.  That's what I'm talking about.

Tanking is bad
A franchise that tanks a whole season for a draft pick is creating a culture of losing.  The Bulls tried to rebuild that way and created a "tanking" culture until the new GM played to win and get playoff experience.

Nelson has to play to win and make the team care about each and every loss starting from day one.

Predictions
Don't be surprised if there are still some trades to be made.

Remember that Nellie was Coach/GM for a long time during the renaissance of Dallas. Nellie will surely be able to give Mully great GM advice.

Prediction:

JRich will be an All-Star this season.

Prediction:

The GSW will make the playoffs this season.

It bothers me
What an absolute lack of imagination this organization has. They figure, "hey Nellie was successful before, let's hire him again".

But, of course, anyone's better than Monty.

Winng! It's about timw we all got it
f*k yea! Nelson should make almost every player better! Dunnyboy I'm not sure though.......

Pietrus, Baron, Ellis and JRich running and gunning will be great and Murphy bombing those threes!

Wonder what will happen with Diogu - Great to feed off him in the half court.

TEAM HAS IMPROVED and that's good enough for me!

We'll see
I am starting the season as hopefull, but not overconfident that they can get into the playoff hunt.  I'm actually kind of doubting it after last year.

I think the games will be fun to watch, and the crowds will get into it again.  I think that will spur the team more than anything.

The Warriors have to beat the teams they are supposed to beat.  Even on the road.  Too many scrub teams out hustled them last year.  10 games maybe they should have won, easily.

They countered that by winning against teams they had no right to beat.  But it wasn't a fair trade.  Improve that, and it's a 6-10 game swing.
