At the Press Conference: Write "Sell the Warriors"

A few of us at Golden State of Mind will be at the Warriors' press conference tomorrow for the "Major Announcement". It's at 6:45pm with free admission for all and free parking. We'll be covering it for the site: taking pictures, trying to get interviews, and reporting what goes down. It's no doubt just a ploy from the clowns (Cohan and Rowell) to get more people to sign up for season tickets. They're ticket representative have been calling fans all summer desperately trying to get people to renew or sign up for season tickets. We've actually been in contact with a couple ticket reps who, by the way, do an excellent job and they're great guys. It's not their fault that ticket sales are lagging, it's the organization's. Management couldn't make a deal for a player and despite Mullin's repeated insistence that Monty will be the head coach for next season, they got rid of him. This hire seems like a last resort move after getting burned in the Harrington talks and the inability to shake up the roster. Bringing back a proven coach means the Warriors perform better, most likely resulting with a spike in season ticket sales. This is a business move that just happens to be a good basketball decision too.

So if you're going to the press conference, expect to be bombarded with requests to sign up for season tickets. This is your chance to make a statement. So here's our plan, when someone asks you to sign up and puts a clipboard in front of your face, sign up. But instead of putting your name there and in the tradition of SellTheKnicks.com, write

"Sell the Warriors"

We need to get Cohan and the organization's attention. Just because they're making a good coaching change, doesn't forgive the past 12 years.

If you haven't seen the invitation, here it is:

On Wednesday, August 30, 2006, the Golden State Warriors will hold a press conference to make a major announcement. As a Warriors fan, we would like to cordially invite you to attend this media event being held at the Arena in Oakland beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Parking and admission are free, with the doors opening at 6:45 p.m. Please enter the arena via the Plaza Club entrance adjacent to the box office windows and Warriors Team Store. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase at the event.

We'll be there, will you? Just look for a couple of incredibly, I mean ridiculously, handsome guys and you'll know who we are. But if you have bad taste and can't pick us out, just look for the guys booing Cohan when he gets on stage - OH WAIT THAT'S EVERYONE!

Well
I'm definetly going tonight...never been to a press conference before. Im going to the A's game beforehand for a little Shilling v Zito and I wish I could go straight to the press conference afterwards but I'm gonna have to kill some time now. Anyway I'm rambling now...
Regarding Cohan: I find myself coming around more and more with this guy. He's spending the money, thats for sure, but on the wrong guys alot of the time. So he hired St. Jean (ugh I just threw up in my mouth a little just having to type that...) and we all know what happened durring his watch. But is that St. Jean's fault for sucking or Cohan's fault for not seeing that St. Jean sucks? And the jury is still out on Mullin. Either way, Cohan is lucky he's  got the only NBA team in town, otherwise the "most loyal fans in sports" might have hightailed it long ago.

Ticket Sales
Thanks guys for a great site, but I'm going to have to disagree with you regarding ticket sales.

I'm a STH.  When I attended the Warriors' upgrade day back in July, there were probably no more than 100-150 seats available in the lower level.  To me, that is an indication that most STH did renew their seats for the upcoming season.  On top of that, I heard there were over 800 names on the Priority list which was put together at the end of last season.

I'm certainly not a member of the Cohan fan club, but I have to agree with the previous poster.  Cohan is willing to spend the money.  Believe me, we could be a lot worse off.

Interesting...
Just got back from the press conference. Nellie was funny and seemed healthy (although he couldn't hear anything the reporters were saying with the mic....) but the thing that irked me was how he kept saying he came back because Mullin wanted him to come here. It sounds like he's doing a favor and not coming because this is where his heart is. Maybe I'm reading too much into this...just a thought. Loved the Tolbert arrest joke.

Yup yup
Fantasy Junkie and I just got back. We've got tons coming soon!

To the Warriors credit they did NOT push ticket sales. We talked to one of the sales rep (very classy guy) and it seemed like the organization was making a conscious effort to be cool about it. Props to them. They saved themselves a lot of "Sell The Warriors" memos from the fans.

Too bad we didn't bump into you MoUpInTheO or any other GSoM community folk! Hopefully next time.
