Breakout Warriors

A lot of people in Hoops Nation don't even know who the Warriors are. 12 years of lottery land will do that to a franchise. It's a pleasant surprise to see some hype for some Warrior players for this upcoming season coming from non-Bay Area folk.

From The Sporting News' recent list of candidates for a breakout 2006-2007 season:

Monta Ellis, Warriors. We still might be a year away from Ellis' breakout season, but the guy is going to be good. Drafted out of high school in the second round last year, the only question about Ellis is whether he will put in the work it will take to be an everyday NBA player. A year or two in college probably would have helped him in that area. Still, he showed last year that he does belong in the NBA. He is one of the five quickest guys in the league, and even if he never develops a completely reliable outside shot, he is going to score. With Baron Davis and Jason Richardson in the backcourt, it might be hard for Ellis to get court time, but I suspect that if anyone can find time for him, it's new coach Don Nelson.

From Indy Star's recent list of five NBA players who could break out if given the opportunity:

Andris Biedrins: The 6-11 Latvian forward has averaged 3.7 points over first two seasons. Entered NBA too soon at 18, but at 20 still has plenty of upside. Produced double-double in first start as a rookie. Was 11th pick in 2004 draft.

Monta Ellis: Point guard was member of last class of high school kids able to jump to the NBA. Averaged 6.8 points in 49 games for Golden State, and scored 27 in season finale against Utah. Warriors will trade Derek Fisher to Utah and appear willing to trade Baron Davis to open more playing time for Ellis.

Monta Ellis (if he can stay healthy) should eventually blossom into a tougher Tony Parker with a better shot and defense. Andris Biedrins (FOUL!)... well, that's another story.

Double Double! (In Rebounds/Shotblocking.) Oh, I wish.

Well, seeing as how Ellis has already broken out, I think that Ike Diogu and Zarko Caparkapa will fit well into Nellies offense, and have much better seasons. I also expect to see (GASP!) consistency on Dunleavys part.

As far as un-breakout, I think Jason Richardson and Baron Davis will, not lose talent per se, but have lower stats due to more overall sharing of the ball. Chris Taft will rot on the bench, and so will Foyle. None of the D-Leaguers we got from the Jazz will be any good. O'Bryant won't be available till later, and wil most likely only get trash time, and we will be unable to evaluate his talent. Perovic is better off in Europe this year, but if he does come, he'll just rot on the bench.

Winner:
Ellis hasn't broken out -- he's poised but the league doesn't know about him yet. Kid is fearless. SG/PG He's the top guy to benefit from Nellie's coaching.

Runners up:
Dunleavy -- No more excuses and probably smart enough to know it. Will do anything for the coach. Our new PF.

Baron -- No more excuses and probably too stubborn to change. I see him melting down -- he doesn't respond positively to authority. If he does "get-it" then he can restart his career and kick-a$$.

Murphy -- Smart enough to realize that Mullin couldn't trade him so he'll start playing center. 20-10 a night!!

JRich - All-Star candidate with Ellis and Dunleavy helping to dish him the ball for open Jumpers. A class act. SG/SF. Nellie's new Michael Finley. I'm getting me a jersey.

Finally an answer:
Zarko -- Now or never. What can this guy do? really! Anyone? Will he be the SF alternative to JRich? A Big winner or big loser -- depends on what Nellie sees in him.

Ike -- Maybe. He can rebound and score but he might be to slow and thick for Nellie's style.

Andris -- if he can shoot a jump shot, he'll excel. Summer league was not encouraging. Poor shooting will put him on the bench.

Foyle -- puleeze come to training camp lean and mean.

Taft -- how's thas back?

Kosta -- Stay

POB -- See ya in 2007
