Rumor: Warriors Interested in Sign and Trade for Melvin Ely
|
From Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer: A source familiar with the situation said the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors have some interest in acquiring Ely in a sign-and-trade. The Bobcats are loaded at power forward, with Emeka Okafor and Sean May recovering from injuries. Charlotte can also use Walter Herrmann and Othella Harrington at that position.
Check out Melvin Ely's profile at Yahoo! Sports. Do you think he could contribute to the Warriors? What would you give up in a sign-and-trade?

from espn's john hollinger:
Doesn't seem like the kind of guy Nellie would be interested in.

"Runs the floor well"
"Has above average physical skills, but must improve his attitude... Strong-built body... Solid post defender... Good shot blocker... Runs the floor well." [emphasis mine].

"Above average physical skills"
Who's out there?
A guy that can play 10-20 reserve minutes behind Murphy and improve on what 3rd-squad-Foyle can do will be the difference in winning some close games.
I think modest improvments matter in team oriented BB. If he can run, Nellie can use him.

10-20 minutes??
I just don't think he's something we need. A decent player, just not a good fit. But what do I know?

Need help now
A decent player might be a much better player on a running team. If Ely can run the floor, he'll help Nellie over a better guy who can't run.
First we'd do a sign and trade for Ely so it's possible we'd give up a guy and make room in the trade.
Murphy is the Center, assuming he wants it, but he's going to get banged up and need help.
Nellie says Foyle is 3rd squad - 27 lbs to big but he's not getting traded with his contract.
Ike might play some Center but I have some doubts about his ability to run and play in Nellie's system. Nellie hasn't said much about him.
Who else?
I'm curious about Taft but he's a 2nd round guy who got hurt and didn't play in Summer league. I wouldn't count on him.
I'm not sure if AB is ready for Nellie and the kind of game Nellie plays -- he's only 20. He's not demonstrated himself ready at all.
POB is not going to do squat this year - a broken foot set him too far back. He's a project.
Zarko - I think he's a gonner.

sign and trade?
Why not take a look at Kemp or Kandi man?
I think K Cato can do as much as Ely for cheaper, bring him in for a look
Why not bring in Stacey Augmon to help with the D at the 3?
