Warriors Offer Matt Barnes a Tryout

Matt Barnes: "Man, this guy stank!"

The Warriors have offered local product Matt Barnes a tryout. Check out the small forward's stats over at Yahoo! Sports. Here's what he told Sam Amick of SacBee.com:

Barnes already has been given early directives from "new" Warriors coach Don Nelson, hired last month for his second go-round in Oakland.

"I talked to him (Thursday), and he told me they're looking for a player like me who plays hard and rebounds, so hopefully I can build on that," Barnes said.

Do you think Matt Barnes will make the Warriors? Would he be good addition to the team?

Thanks to loyal GSoM community member JB for spotting this one.

yes
I feel that getting Matt Barnes is a good idea. It might not make a great impact, but at least we'll be grabbing a SF who can grab boards. On the downside though, he's not a great outside shooter, so it'll be tough at that SF position.

Barnes is a good pick up
Barnes is a good hustle player.  He can give some good minutes off the bench and make hustle plays.  But the Warriors need more than this to really make some headway this coming season.  A good start, and bench filler, but they need some big talent too.

jiri welsh
hey, if u remember a while ago the warriors drafted some guy named jiri welsh who was later traded, hes a free agent who plays SG/SF and can really shoot the three, it might be a decent pickup

apparently he plays some defense too and can run to a degree which would fit nelsons style

Welsch
Welsch went back to Europe.  He's no longer in the NBA market.

Good pickup, but
it just makes it harder to see who we will cut.

I propose we cut the Jazz.

Wrong position
I'd rather see them get a guy like Mo Taylor who was just released by the Knicks. Not sure we can afford him, but we could use the extra muscle down low.

Mo better?
thought the same as you, but then tried to imagine whether he'd be fitting into Nelson's system any better than what we've got in Ike, Beedy, etc. Besides, he'd have to come cheap, and our roster is glutted with fill ins now as it is ...

Mo Taylor, Mo' Problems
Taylor has a huge hole in his game.  Power forwards who can't rebound aren't worth that much. It's actually rather impressive how a strong guy as tall as he is can be such a pathetic rebounder. He can score some, but that's it.  He provides essentially nothing to the club, Nelson style or not.  He doesn't move the ball well.  He doesn't extend the defense.  He doesn't get to the line or get anyone in foul trouble (except maybe his teammates who have to cover for him on D).  Mo Taylor?  No thanks.  Only thing he'd do would be to make Dunleavy seem like a rebounding machine at the 4 in comparison.

Barnes?
If Ray Young can't cut it, then why Matt Barnes? What's up with the UCLA products? Please don't tell me Baron's got Chris Mullin's number too...Fine, Barnes is waay better than Ray Young but I think we should focus on big men.
