OPEN THREAD: GAME #39- Warriors vs Clippers

warriors-clippers-mlk.jpeg

Warriors (W-L): 18-20

Clippers (W-L): 17-20

Time: 1:00 PM PST

TV: FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 1050

Happy Martin Luther King Day!! Today we have a matinee special against the Paper Clips. The Warriors struggled big time against the Pacific Division last season and the Clippers were no exception. The Clippers have taken 6 of the last 8 from the Warriors. If the Warriors are going to make the playoffs this season, this is a important time to send a message to the Clips and the rest of the Pacific Division.

On paper the Clips are a much better team than the Dubs (Can you believe they're trying so hard to trade Corey Maggette? He'd be the 3rd best player on the Warriors even if everyone were healthy.) and the Warriors have been blown out in three straight games to the Suns, the Magic, and the Heat. But today my friends is our lucky day. The gods are on our side. Clippers owner Donald Sterling is the kind of loser who won't have any luck on MLK Day (check out the Controversy section of his Wikipedia entry). The Warriors are destined to win this one.

Injuries aren't an excuse, especially with so many other teams in the league fielding the injury bug, so I won't even get into them. Let's just say don't be surprised if the Warriors only throw out the league minimum 8 guys for this game.

The Clips are astonishly one game behind the Dubs and are probably the most disappointing team in the league right now. Let's keep it that way.

Vegas Odds: Warriors by 3 (via Fox Sports 9:54pm PST)

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 5
  • Baron Davis collects 25 points and 11 dimes.
  • Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy finally step up after Nellie's very public call for them to show up. (Boost that trade value!)
  • Kelenna Azubuike and Matt Barnes score a combined 28 points.
  • Elton Brand gets 20-10.
  • Chris Kaman gets 12-12.
  • Corey Maggette goes to the line at least 8 times.
  • Sam Cassell gets E.T. to come to today's game in Oakland.

Don't forget to head on over to SBNation Clippers' blog Clips Nation to tell them how good looking Chris Kaman's new hairdo is!

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

THROW UP A W!!

if we lose this one
i may start to lose hope, i am just going to say they win by 3, dunleavy and murphy are okay, enough to raise trade value, but not enough to make mullin want to hang onto them

go W's

please!
There are so many reasons why we need this game. The biggest are, the Clips are in our division. Taking 1 out of 2 is necessary, taking both would be preferred because that pushes us up and them back. Winning today would give us some momentum and hope, which we have none of right now. I see BD having a huge game, and Monta playing really well today also. Cassell is still coming off his injury, and we should exploit their backcourt, since they will most likely dominate our frontcourt. go dubs!

Statement time ..
It's usually really difficult to say that a game played on January 15th is a "must-win" .. but this one really is for the sake of the Warriors confidence level. The Clippers are horrendous away from home (sound familiar?), having won only won five games on the road. Four of those games have been against some of the most injury depleted squads in the league - they beat Miami without Wade, Shaq, Walker, and Posey, Hornets without Paul, Peja, West, and BJax (although, he might have logged a minute or two with before the Hornets misdiagnosed him again), Houston without Yao (or was it McGrady .. or both?) and Memphis without Pao. Their only real road win was last week against the T-Pups, and they needed a last-second shot by their perpetual trade block dude to get it. Needless to say, that team has really been reeling away from STAPLES Center. Maybe DTS should shell out for a new plane or something. In any case, with a team that really has no reason to be confident in away games, the Dubs need to take a page from the Magic and do to the Clips what the Magic did to the Dubs - go for the jugular and win this one early. Other than Brand, no one has really played with consistency. Kaman is struggling, Thomas has buyout talks already, Livingston is up and down, and Maggette is inevitably distracted. If BDiddy can play aggressive and physical on Cassell, he should be contained and/or put down with another back injury. This is a really win-able game .. Warriors simply need to get the job done. This one can come back to haunt the Dubs in April if they are a game or two out of eighth because the Clips could very well be the team just ahead of them.

Totally agree
This will be very, very embarassing if we don't win. Clippers are horrible on the road.

We'll see
Do you think that Murphy and Dunleavy are going to come out and have a stellar game?  I don't.

As the great Jim Barnett might say, lack of "mental toughness" can ruin a good player.  Perhaps Murph and Dunleavy would both be excellent role players right now if they didn't have those huge contracts to live up to.  The boos probably don't help much, either.  Or the constant trade rumors.

Oh yeah, Murphy is starting.  Since Nelson has indicated that he has given Murph a little more slack than Dunleavy for his injuries, I'm guessing this is one of his last chances to make a future with the Warriors.  Will he melt or step up?

by RonG on Jan 15, 2007 11:32 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baron
I just hope Baron is out of is family troubles and i hope he play's a good game.
I hope Barnes put up big numbers to, he had some off nights in the last couple of games.
But it's like Nelson said, we rely to much on Barnes, but if he can put up big numbers, we probarbly are going to win.

by Jacque on Jan 15, 2007 12:15 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MURPHLEAVY gonna play good today
both of them going to show up and probably step only having 8 players on our team, forget all the chats this past weekend, forget all the trade rumors, just go out there and play, we need them tonight if we still want to be ahead of the clips.  I am not giving up yet on this team
I want this fire to go back for Mike Dunleavy

the kawakami thing..
i just don't get this guy...i really don't. Everytime he brings up "cap klling, huge extensions" he mentions the Jrich deal. Uh what??!!
First of all his deal is a BARGAIN for a player with his skills. he would have EASILY gotten a bigger better offer on the open market that offseason. Sure, talk about the Foyle, Dunleavy, Murphy signings as "huge" and "cap killing", but please be objective about Jrich's deal.
It's like he has something against jason...did Jrich steal his girlfriend or something? Maybe crept into his house early one morning and pee'd on his cornflakes? I just don't get it.
He makes some great other points, but this one...way off base and sadly expected.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on Jan 15, 2007 12:46 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not entirely
i think he feels j-rich is a bit over paid, and i agree, his deal isnt as bad as others, but i think we could ahve gotten him for a little less, its not as bad as others but it isnt great either

not saying i agree with him, just trying to shed some light on what he is saying

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 1:18 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ok..
so you think you can get a scoring gaurd that averages 20+ pts, 6 boards and 3+ assists for less than 10 mill per season?? Good luck.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Maybe crept into his house
"early one morning and pee'd on his cornflakes? "

If Jason didn't he should now, that hack deserves it.

Dunleavy saved us from our "lets give up almost all of our lead in the final 2 minutes of a quarter" syndrome.

At the half Warriors up by 9!
Warriors- 60 Clippers- 51 * Boom Dizzle is moving the ball well and killing the Clips when they double and triple team him-- 11 dimes as the half * Monta's driving and scoring at will- 8 for 10 with 18 points *Biedrins can't find the bucket? * Barnes is working this hustle * Troy came out pretty solid and even backed down Elton Brand for a nice layup * Dunleavy came out absolutely awful and missed open shots. You could hear the boos on TV. But he rebounded very nicely and started hitting his shots. A nice weakside block on Brand too. But please, stop whining at every call to the refs! * Everyone's gonna get a chance to play tonight and play through their mistakes with only 8 players. Let's hope everyone gets theirs.

Look at baron
Beautiful drive on the break for the basket and the foul. Heres to him converting the foul shot.

by SkipT on Jan 15, 2007 2:38 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Entertaining
Only way to describe MDJ's steal and Maggette's block.

by SkipT on Jan 15, 2007 2:53 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Again
Baron's steal and subsequent blocking on the break is incredibly similar.

time out by nelson shows difference from last year
i know everybody remembers last year's back to back with the clips and how we completely imploded.  well, the one thing i couldn't believe is how montgomery never called timeouts to stem the roll of the clips.

so, it's refreshing to see nellie call a quick timeout after just two buckets by the clips into the 4th.

we'll see how it goes.  hopefully, he can get these guys to fight for it.

why
cant dun be like this or at least half this every game

by bayareawarriors on Jan 15, 2007 3:15 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We don't play the clippers every game
Daddy is willing the rebounds into his hands

by SkipT on Jan 15, 2007 3:15 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Look at Cassel hug the ref
Downtrodden by everyone's favorite, the 5% historical win percentage, suddenly the clips need all the help they can get.

by SkipT on Jan 15, 2007 3:15 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Clippers caving
and dunleavy is still unwatchable crying for fouls, missing layups, omg, what do we have to do to unload him - anything! I don't care what the commentators say ...
BDavis feed to Beidrins  ought to be  our stockton to malone call ...
finally, some defense this quarter

by hardcore on Jan 15, 2007 3:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

trade baits played well
murph - 11 pts and 9 rebs
mdj - 18 pts and 13 rebs

it's an age-long question but why can't these two players give us those kinds of production night in and night out...or at least 80% of the time they play???

by MANUTEs BOLs on Jan 15, 2007 3:35 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it was a good game
good execution in the 3rd and especially 4th quarter. no sloppy plays and a few bad shots(instead of a lot). plenty of hustle, especially by Dunleavy. He's trying to get his dad to recruit him ;D

but seriously though, so many hustle plays by Dunleavy today. I couldnt count them with the 10 fingers on my hand! a lot of key plays by Dunleavy today.

in the first... Monta looked like... a SUPERSTAR with all his leet drives to the basket and sublime finishing around the rim. good hustle plays by Murphy in the first half too. he made elton brand work on both ends of the floor. And those 2 assists in the 2nd half... the threaded needle pass to (it was either diogu or barnes... i forget) in the post and the circus pass to Andris for the dunk.

good game! it was very enjoyable to watch

by ZombieWarrior on Jan 15, 2007 4:24 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why hate dunleavy
if you guys look at dunleavys averages he is having one of his best seasons of his career and is only playing about 25 minutes a game and he does a little of everything

by bor887 on Jan 15, 2007 5:16 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

except for one thing
he doesnt play D

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 6:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dunleavy's D
Doesn't play D?  Nellie says he scores best on the team on D.  He's always in the right spot, keeps his hands moving (did ya see what he did to Meggette yesterday, from behind?), blocks out (especially on the weak side -- Hello, MP and Ike), and takes more charges than the rest of the team put together.  And, even tho Dun's still in Nellie's doghouse, does Nellie have Dun in at crunch time every game?  Yes he does, because his savvy and defense (and surprising ability to get the key rebound) are invaluable.

No, surprisingly, the problem's not Mike's D, it's his weak O (altho he hit the shots when they counted against the Clips).  He needs to drill the open shot.  And Nellie and I are still waiting to see him drive on points, so as to use his height advantage, but his relative lack of speed is a problem there.  Still, given his reduced minutes, 18 points and 13 RBs is just about what the doctor ordered.
