Rumor: Warriors in Discussions with at least 2 teams about Trading Mike Dunleavy

The trade rumors reuniting Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Sr. together in La-La land have been plentiful, but here's an additional tidbit of info from Janny Hu of SFGate:

The Warriors have had tentative discussions with at least two other teams about Dunleavy junior, according to sources. Any trade would require some numbers juggling, however, because the forward is in the first year of his $45 million rookie extension. Under league rules, the Warriors can take back only about $5.7 million of his $7.4 million salary for this season.

I have no doubt in my mind, especially after Nellie's frustrations with Dunleavy not stepping up (see Dunleavy + Murphy = Mo' Money, Less Production and The Don Nelson Show on KNBR 1/11/07), that the Warriors are actively trying to trade him. BUT as far as a Dunleavy deal actually happening I'll believe it when I see it. Any GM who trades for him or Adonal Foyle with those contracts is just asking for a pink slip. Can you imagine the reactions of fans from the teams that trade for these guys?

For some more jucier Dunleavy trade rumor speculation head on over to loyal GSoM community member badnamedwarriorfan's diary exploring some trade ideas which details one trade for the Bobcats' Gerald Wallace and another one for the Sonics' Rashard Lewis that was discussed on ESPN's NBA Fastbreak this past Saturday night.

Do you think Mike Dunleavy will be on the Warriors past the February 22nd trading deadline?

holy crap!!!
Nellie practically begged for Dunleavy to go to LA!  Did you see his quotes?!?!?

In evaluating Dunleavy's struggles, the coach practically stated that his forward would be a better fit for the Clippers...

Hmm what do you mean Nell???

"He's more of a blend player that probably would flourish with a really good team, maybe a bigger team, but hasn't flourished here where I need him to be more dominant and be a better player," Nelson said. "It's not that he's not a good player. He's unable to do the things I thought he could do at this point."

Say whaaat??

"It's not understanding, it's doing and flourishing in the system -- making shots and plays, passes, free throws and a whole bunch of stuff on the offensive end," Nelson said. "Defensively, he's where he's supposed to be. (He) accepts charges, does a lot of things, but he is physically what he is. He just gets overpowered."

HAHAHAHAHA.  Just the thought of this brings joy to my heart!  Am I wrong for this?  Anyone?  .... Anyone?????

We'll see, I'll be there and I'll definitely post anything interesting I see/hear.

Well, I mentioned some ubsubstantiated rumors ...
I don't want to give you rumors that I can't substantiate and lose your trust, so I won't give out names that I've heard in Dunleavy rumors. I will say that the Warriors were in preliminary talks, supposedly, looking to get two players in return for Dunleavy, one of whom has been rumored to be on the block for weeks. If you guys absolutely hate me saying this stuff, I will. Just don't want to get your hopes up unfairly - I think I can say the team is trying and you won't hate me!

by pree on Jan 15, 2007 1:24 AM PST   0 recs

Hmmm
I'll miss him.

by Zorgon on Jan 15, 2007 3:09 AM PST   0 recs

Hmm
My initial reaction to your reply was disbelief. Who in their right mind would miss MDJ? Soft, generally clueless and a poor shooter, he's never been much of anything.

Another second or two though and I see what you mean and I find myself agreeing. I believe it was two years ago, I was at a game and Mike got ejected against the Mavs. As he walked toward the tunnel, hes basically screaming and rips his jersey off and throws it into the stands. In short, Mikes problem never was that he didn't care or that wasn't a competitor. If anything, some of his shooting problems were likely compounded by the pressure he put on himself.

Dunleavey can't be blamed for having an contract he can't live up to. Anyone of us would have taken the deal too. If he is traded (and my gut says he won't be) I won't miss his play or his contract, but I'll certainly miss his heart and I'd absolutely wish him the best against every team in the league except for the dubs.

the only thing i would miss
is Funleavy

by travisl212 on Jan 15, 2007 11:49 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

funleavy?
who came up with that nickname?

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 12:21 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

wow
wow, just wow, why would we trade that top notch play away?

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 12:56 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

hahahahaha
they did trade dunleavy... and im already starting to miss funleavy!

by travisl212 on Jan 17, 2007 4:03 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

His
main problem is finding his role. He's subpar at everything, and has no outstanding skills, which would make him wonderful at a lower level (college) cut cubpar at hiager levels (NBA). We should give him a treat and send him down to the D-League so he can Jam with Bakersfield and get triple doubles and raise his trade value tenfold.

And I agree with you in that we really can't blame him, but I think he could've taken a more active role in trying to find a role for himself, insead of continuing to think he could be all-around.

That being said, I miss anybody who leaves the Warriors. Plain and simple. I miss Calbert Cheney, Derek Fisher, and Chris Taft from last season. I miss Roberson from this season. The Warriors are like a family, and Dunleavy is just as much a part of it to me as JRich or Foyle, and a void is left.

smoke?
is this a smoke screen to drum up interest in MDJr before the Feb deadline?

is that smoke coming out of pree's pipe?

or Mullin's?

Hmm, is there any name that's been in the trade rumor mill lately that would make us a better team for this playoff run? Don't get me wrong, losing that albatross of a contract would be splendid, and if the contract we get back is shorter, great, but it's hard to hope we'd bee getting any talent in the deal ... just trying not to get my hopes up (again) on unsubstantiated rumors on GSoM ...

by hardcore on Jan 15, 2007 7:06 AM PST   0 recs

Not going anywhere
Look again at his salary (listed on HoopsHype.com)  The only GM stupid enough to trade for him would by Isiah Thomas.

No.

We are stuck with Dunleavy through, GULP, 2011...

hahahaha
i guess you were wrong and it didnt take much time for it to happen

by travisl212 on Jan 17, 2007 4:06 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

yea
i was at the infamous dunleavy ejection game where he threw his jersey into the crowd as well. I actually got excited and thought that he might actually play with some passion, but alas, he shows all the emotion of a stiff board

by tadams1080 on Jan 15, 2007 8:51 AM PST   0 recs

Game today is very important for him man
The game today against his daddy, is very important, this year he actually had help us in couple of games and been solid in a lot of games but only these past few games where he's actually playing bad and Nellie and Mully makes all this comments over the weekend probably trying to light a fire in Dunleavy. I Just can't wait for tonights game, if he plays bad, i assume he gon be traded, but again if he plays good, Mully will fall in love agaain and have second thoughts on trading him.
I want this fire to go back for Mike Dunleavy

by straightfromthebay on Jan 15, 2007 9:13 AM PST   0 recs

i understanding lighting the fire..
but Nellie's "motivational" comments to the media are looking less and less like "step up" vs. "you're time is up."

Something like he needs to step up on defense or something sounds like its trying to get him going, but now that it's escalated to "he looks like he would flourish in another system" either sounds widely desperate or more like its his time to leave.

by dj fuzzylogic on Jan 15, 2007 9:25 AM PST   0 recs

woo front page
i would go nuts if they got rid of dunleavy, heck i would like a salary dump at this point, we then would have room to resign ellis and biedrins.

maggette would be a nice a fit with the warriors in my view, he would thrive under nellie, he is quick, can penetrate, and is super athletic, whos a better dunker, j-rich or maggette?

my one worry is his defense, however now that i think about dunleavy, any defense is an improvement

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 10:08 AM PST   0 recs

er.. to clarify
how much worse (the comments that is) can it get before Dun finally plays with some consistency or plays the way Nellie wants him to?  What more can Nellie actually say...

To me, Nellie just sounds disgusted with Dun (and maybe the rest of the team sans Baron, Jrich, and Ellis) based on how bad the public comments have gotten.  If these last comments don't work, i really don't know what will.

by dj fuzzylogic on Jan 15, 2007 10:10 AM PST   0 recs

i think nellie has given up on dun
i think nellie tried to get dunleavy to play better, and now thinks that he really cant do jack with him, he might as well try to get something back (hopefully a very good something) for him.  He tried dunleavy at the 4, saw his play and just kinda thought " he isnt going to work" and that was that, and since dunleavy is still terrible, the public rags on him, yeah we could rag on other guys, but they didnt just sign a 7 million dollar a year contract extension, same with murphy

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 10:14 AM PST   0 recs

small problem
According to a league source, Mike Dunleavy, Sr. remains interested in trading for his son Mike Dunleavy, Jr.

The Warriors are interested in dealing him, but the Clippers' head coach hasn't received the support of his front office on such an acquisition.

The Warriors have had tentative discussions with at least two other teams about Dunleavy, according to sources.

well this means its three teams that they are talking to, but if the clip's administation doesnt like it, it wont happen

we'll see what happens i guess, full article here

It's from the same source
RealGM is just paraphrasing the original SFGate/ SF Chronicle article that I linked to above. RealGM just loves to try to pass of rumors as if they're their own.

my bad
sorry about that, it kinda sounded similar, i suppose i should have hit the read more button and see if it was the same

sorry about that

by badnamedwarriorfan on Jan 15, 2007 10:38 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Oh no thang
My bad- I wasn't trying to call you out at all. Thanks for the linking and sharing the info.

I was just trying to point out how RealGM tries to pretend they have all these great rumors when they're just getting them from local papers. They don't do a very good job making it clear that they're just paraphrasing some other person's hard work.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 15, 2007 10:51 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

i hear ya on RealGm
yeah RealGm is just a rumor 'catch all'...kind of like Hoopshype. BUT at least those sites offer their "daily rumor review" for FREE. Unlike ESPN Insider which charges you a monthly fee for the same thing.

I wonder if this works to get rid of MDJ
Every home, and the next home game against the Clippers, let's all boo MDJ (even if he's playing good) each time he touches the ball. This way, Papa Dun will feel sorry for his son and "rescue" him. I'm sure MDS has enough heart for his son to make a non-basketball move to get him.
