The Warriors & Pacers Blockbuster Trade: Throwing Up W's and L's

In case you haven't heard the Golden State Warriors pulled off a blockbuster robbery of- ooops, I mean trade with the Indiana Pacers. Here's the full details of the eight-player trade:

Warriors Get

Al Harrington

Stephen Jackson

Sarunas Jasikevicius

Josh Powell

Pacers Get
(more like Warriors get rid of)

Troy Murphy

Mike Dunleavy

Ike Diogu

mccleod.jpg
Keith McLeod

jrich-bd.jpg
Boom Dizzle and JRich can hardly contain their excitement about the trade!

Just like we did for the Allen Iverson trade, let's throw up some W's for the winners and L's for the losers of this blockbuster deal- GSoM style!

Throwing Up W's

Golden State Warriors
This squad on paper doesn't look bad at all even in the uber-talented Western Conference:

PG: Baron Davis
SG: Jason Richardson
SF: Stephen Jackson
PF: Al Harrington
C: Andris Biedrins

Bench: Monta Ellis, Mickael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Adonal Foyle, Kelenna Azubuike

PLAYOFFS?!! Yeah, we're talking about the playoffs!

nellie-fight-the-power.jpg
With this squad you don't wanna mess with this man!

Warrior Fans
After 12 years of sitting out the playoffs plus some horrible salary cap mismanagement and poor talent evaluations, we're all about change and I'm not talking about the stuff jingling in your pockets. We all wanted to see something new and not just a new bizarre hairstyle from Murphy or Dunleavy. This trade marks a change for the better and introduces a new, exciting brand of hoops in the Bay.

Chris Mullin and Rod Higgins
You two fellas have taken a lot of harsh (although deserved) criticism from the media and fans alike for your countless blunders. But today, you've done us all proud. You corrected two mistakes (Mike Dunleavy's awful 44 million dollar deal and Troy Murphy's excessive 60 million dollar deal) that many of us never thought you'd be able to correct. You also brought back some nice pieces courtesy of the Pacers. I can't say it enough- you guys deserve some major props here. You're both officially out of the doghouse. Now if you can turn Adonal Foyle into Kevin Garnett... well, I guess that's unfair since only Jesus could turn water into fine wine. We'll definitely take this trade with a smile.

dunmully.jpg
Chris to Dun Sr: "Hahaha, I actually managed to find some sucka to take your son!"

Jokes aside- nice work! I'm impressed you cats were able to move Murphy and Dunleavy and their god awful contracts WITHOUT giving up JRich, Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins, or a valuable 2007 draft pick. Mullin- you da man! Higgins- you da man!

Don Nelson
When Nellie came back Warriors Nation was ecstatic. However, it didn't make sense why he'd want to come back to this cleanup project. At this point in his career you would think Nellie would be after a championship, not a first round sweep. This move doesn't make the Warriors championship contenders by any stretch, but it does signify that they're ready and able to make moves to better this squad. Nellie now has some nice pieces to work with. Who knows? Maybe they'll be some bargaining chips for another blockbuster deal that brings the Warriors to contender status. In Nellie we trust.

nelson0131.jpg
This trade sets Nellie free!

Troy Murphy
T-Double has put in some solid seasons for the Warriors. Sure the guy can't play a lick of D and has a strange phobia of the paint on the offensive end, but Murph's still a good player who just didn't fit in Nellie's fast paced style of play. TMurph has been rumored to be on the trading block for over a year and for the first time in a long time he can pick up tomorrow's paper and not see trade rumors about him. He should be a solid complement to Jermaine O'Neal in Indiana.

Stephen Jackson
Lost in all the Free Artest mania last season was the Free Jax movement. The Pacers wanted to get rid of him badly in a PR cover up and I'm sure Jax wanted to leave as well. He'll love playing for Nellie and with the rest of the Warriors. Jackson will be a great fit here with his length and athleticism.

Ike Diogu
Ike will get a fresh start and a real chance, something he never really got under Monty and Nellie. After being deemed untouchable in last year's Ron Artest talks, the Pacers finally got their coveted man. Good luck Ike.

ike2006.jpg
Hash wants the Pacers to play Ike!

Mike Dunleavy
GOOD RIDDANCE! Nellie exposed Dunleavy for what most of us have known for years- a lazy, finger pointing, below average NBA talent who's gotten way too many undeserved opportunities. The next improvement Mike makes on his game will be his first since he joined the NBA. We won't even get into that ridiculous, ill-timed contract that Mullin and company handed him. Haha, actually sorry I lied, here you go: 44 Reasons Why Giving Mike Dunleavy 44 Million Wasn't the Brightest Idea: Part I | Part II | Part III | Part IV.

dunleavy-cohan.jpg
One loser gone, one to go.

Sarunas Jasikevicius
A guy named Sarunas playing for Nellie? Some retro freshness for Warrior fans. That just sounds too good to be true. Also, Warriors Nation has a cool new name to learn.

The BoomRich Backcourt
Finally, Baron Davis and Jason Richardson have some talented, athletic players to roll with. It's not going to be them and [insert NBDL great or NBA journeyman + expensive bench] against the Western Conference beasts anymore.

bd-dun.jpg
BD happily assists Dun to the door.

Andris Biedrins
Andris is having a breakout season and doing some damage on the glass, but the kid's starting to break down and get fatigued. Enter rugged forwards Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson and 'Dris has some very capable players to help him out down low.

Charmin' Soft
Sorry guys, but you're going to lose of a lot of free advertising on the mighty GSoM with the Murphleavy soft forward tandem gone from the Bay. Still, we'll see what we can do for you guys in the near future. Hit us up at goldenstwarriors@gmail.com if you're interested in alternative advertising opportunities on GSoM.

One last time!

Throwing Up L's

Indiana Pacers
You just took on two of the worst contracts in the league with one single trade. Actually, let me phrase that as a question- you just took on two of the worst contracts in the league with one trade?

playoffs_harrington_800.jpg
Yup, thanks guys. Don't you mean "You Gotta Be in the Bay"?

None of us understand your logic, but hey-

THANKS!!

Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird
You just traded for the softest frontcourt in the entire league. Actually, let me phrase that as a question- you just traded for the softest frontcourt in the entire league? Ike better work out for the Pacers or this trade is going to look like highway robbery. Walsh and Bird are going to get a lot of Xmas cards next season from Warriors Nation.

Jermaine O'Neal

Jermaine's bad!

Jermaine O'Neal is one bad man (in a good way) who's probably very, very mad right now. He just lost his good buddy and now he's stranded in Indiana with... Mike Dunleavy? Just the other week Jermaine spoke about how the Pacers were mediocre and wanted some changes. I highly doubt he was asking the Walsh and Bird to make this squad weak for years to come.

t1_harrington.oneal.jpg
Al: "Yo Jermaine- dogg meet me in the Bay on Februaray 22nd!"

Al Harrington
Instead of teaming up with his buddy Jermaine down low, he'll be asked to be a rebounding force and the sole low post threat on this Warriors squad. Still, Al gets to play for Nellie who will maximize his tweener capabilities.

Pacer Fans
Hope you guys like your forwards Charmin' soft in Indiana! Unless Ike blows up out of nowhere, this was a terrible basketball trade. Any guesses on the over/under on how long it will take Pacer fans to boo Mike Dunleavy?

Mickael Pietrus
Say goodbye to that starting spot and decent stats. The Warriors won't have to play MP2 big minutes at the power forward spot anymore either. Less minutes means less stats which means less money in the offseason.

Funleavy Foto Fun
Hey it was fun while it lasted! We're all really going to miss all the jokes- we laughed, but mostly we cried. Actually, come to think of it they were getting older than this 12 year playoff drought. Now, Playoff Photo Phun- that's something really to look forward to.

27990781_f7df9ce930.jpg
We'll miss Mike's great defense on Western Conference "big" men.

Matt Barnes
Barnes has been making big strides this season, leap-frogging 44 million dollar man Mike Dunleavy and 60 million dollar man Troy Murphy for a starting spot under Nellie. With this trade the Warriors will get an infusion of legit NBA talent and Barnes will be sent to the bench. Expect his solid play to continue, but in less minutes. Barnes was on his way to a very nice big money deal this offseason, but this trade will hurt his stats and contract severely.

Western Conference Bubble Teams
Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, LA Clippers- it just got a whole lot tougher to make the playoffs. It's going to be an exciting April at the bottom of the Western Conference. FAN-tastic!

Leastern Conference
The weak just got weaker. The weak just got a whole lot softer too.

Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy, Ike Diogu, Keith McLeod
I really feel for you cats. You just went from living in the Bay Area to living in the middle of nowhere. Do they even having running water in Indiana? Electricity? By the way, I heard the Chinese and Indian food over their sucks. Hope you guys get a chance to stop by Hangen in Mountain View or Pakwan in Hayward before you roll out to Indiana

And finally, the best part about this trade is that this classic picture of Al Harrington doing his thang on offense and Mike Dunleavy doing his uh, "thing" on defense will have an entirely new meaning for us:

dunleavy3.jpg
DUNK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Who are your winners and losers for this blockbuster trade?

Stay tuned to Golden State of Mind for much more coverage of the trade and the usual Warriors hype nonstop!

Brilliant!
First off, you guys at GSoM have outdone yourself with this post.  Really, it's a masterpiece, a powerful blend of words and images that captures perfectly both the emotional and intellectual response of the learned Warriors fans to this big move.

YEEEHAAA!

Yes, there are issues, but this is a really positive move.  Do you think the Pacers owed Mullin something?  Some secret deal during his last season?  It's just bizarre.  Watch any 3 warriors games this season or last and read GSoM and you would know to never take on Dunleavy and his contract.  And Murphy, one of those classic 15-10 guys who do nothing to win.  Good for fantasy second-stringers, but that's it.  Could it be they are trying to make the team whiter?  I know that's crazy talk, but why the hell would Bird and Walsh do this?

I'll stop looking the gift horse in the mouth now.  Thanks for making my month Warriors and GSoM.

by walkerp on Jan 17, 2007 4:47 PM PST reply actions

yep....
the white factor is definitely present in indiana, just read the history on that one.  i also think those guys might get some great stats out there.

like you said, the east is a weaker conference.  jermaine o'neal might get easy shots for dunleavy, easy boards for murph.  on the fantasy tip, i bet mike and murph stock goes up.  does indiana have a point guard?  if so, they are a contender..

big picture, both teams might get significantly better.  jackson will likely play well just to show everyone he still has it.

yet, in the end, will this mean more PT for adonal foyle?  who else will fill in the hole in the middle?...

One thing
I hope it's not Jackson starting for us, since he's already on the downward slope of his career and hasn't been exactly lights out this year either. I think he'll be a fantastic asset off the bench if we let JRich slot at 3 (where's arguably more natural) and Ellis at the 2 or even have Barnes start at the 3.

Damn funny
You always bring the A-game, Atma!  Hilarious and smart, as usual.

Seriously, though, how can we not be giddy at all the needs that were wiped out with this one trade?  Experienced starters.  Cap space.  Outside shooting. A touch of ugliness down low.  Above all, hope!

I do feel bad for the guys shipping out for Indy.  What a terrible place to live.  Look on the bright side, I hear you can get a double-wide trailer on an acre for around 50K.  I'm sure the beef is good.  And corn.  Yeah, corn...

Mickael Pietrus
Say goodbye to that starting spot and decent stats. The Warriors won't have to play MP2 big minuets at the power forward spot anymore either. Less minutes means less stats which means less money in the offseason.

I'd like to add Less minutes means less stepping out of bounds form the corner.

Karma
been thinking about this assualt..er, i mean trade all day long. And the only way it makes sense is...KARMA.
The Pacers shunned the W's in the Artest trade...then proceeded to rape them in that Harrington deal by doing that HIGHLY questionable trade with the Hornets which netted them the trade exception making the Harrington trade with ATL possible. Just seemed that YES, in fact Indy did owe the W's. And they just paid up...IN FULL.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by far the best article ever on GSoM. When you're this happy, everything's great! I think I'm failing school because I'm reading about this trade...WHO CARES! We got Harrington and got rid of Murphleavy!!!

I wonder who will start though, I'm assuming until JRich is back, Ellis, Baron, Biedrins and Harrington are all starting, but it seems that Jackson at the SF is bigger than Nellie wants.....we'll see I guess!

Duh
Winners:

Indiana. They get rid of their totally bad PR and have taken in three solid players who will probobly boost them to the playoffs.

Mike Dunleavy Jr. He won't get booed.

Troy Murphy. He can actually go back to doing stuff instead of getting stuffed on the bench by Don Crapson.

Ike Diogu. *See Troy Murphy

Al Harrington. He can look forward to a fresh start.

Stephen Jackson.  *See Al Harrington

Powell. He'll get to play since a lot of guys are injured.

Sarunas. *See Powell

Warriors Management. They make one good move, and the world is all roses and flowers. They have gone from being hated to being loved.

Losers

Warriors in the Long Run. The fans are happy now, but in a year or two, they'll all realise that this was a "deal with the devil" (so to speak, Indiana is not the devil).

McLeod. Get ready for name mispronounciation and time on the bench.

Pacers Management. Pacers fans are giving mixed reactions to the trade.

Bottom Line: Hopefully everyone will recover from this dreamlike state you're in. Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson are about equal to Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy, maybe better, maybe worse, but both of them are emotional basketcases. Sooner or later, one of them's gonna do something. PJ-Spree Volume II, anyone?

As far as the rest of the trade....

Ike=Sarunas? Heeeeeell no.

McLeod=Powell? I don't think much of Keith, but he's better than this guy.

Warriors=Another bad move.

Win for me one last time tonight!

at first I thought you were being sarcastic about this trade...now i just don't know. You really don't like it? Dude your delusional.
Harrington > Murph
Jax > Dun
Diogu...how the heck would we know. He sure didn't play good here.
Jaskivious at least a wash with Mcleod.
Plus the $$ savings...this is a complete disaster for the Pacers. Unless Ike DOES become the next Elton Brand lol.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on Jan 17, 2007 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

It's all opinion
Harrington may have more points, but he won't get as many rebounds as murphy. It =s out. Defense? .07 steals and .03 blocks last season! Scary.

Jackson, once again, doesn't get as many rebounds as Dunleavy, not counting the fact that his stats are going down, and will probobly be worse than Dunleavys in a years time.

Even if you want to think they ARE better, you have to admit that we lost in the trading of the backups, and that both these guys could go crazy on Nelson, shoot up a nightclub (there's more in the Bay Area) or worse...THAT'S my main beef with it.

Atma, man, you're at your best counting chickens, but let's wait a bit and see how this actually plays out.  I'm always interested when a savior (Jackson, a guy you love) turns out to be a criminal and a thug, who hits people in wheelchairs and fires pistols outside of nightclubs.  Guy's also a clubhouse disaster.  Just what the team needs. Maybe Nellie and BD can straighten him out -- tho no one has before.  Try for a little perspective next time, OK?

i think this trade is gonna help the warriors, but not as much as everyone thinks. Harringtons gonna give us that consistent 3rd scorer that can take the load of the boomrich combo when one isnt healthy and jas... whatever is a much better baup PG than mcleod and will let monta play SG and jackson will be a good sixth man (i think barnes will still start, especially when hes still got competition for his job. i am curious about POB and if he benefits or loses from this trade. I also dont think this is the last trade of the yeaar. we still have another bad contract to unload with foyle (good luck with that) and a surplus of swinmen with
harrington
barnes
peitrus
powell
jackson
jrich
and i expect some will be moved. i am happy though that when dub favorites who have been mentioned in recent trade talks like beads, monta and jrich arent leaving and i think well play better now that everyone stops worrying about being traded. i also thin ike is gonna haunt us.

But i'm REALLY glad we get an opportunity to wait and see with a different set of players that is for sure.

Numbers don't win games
I see a lot of optimistic Indy fans talking about Murphy getting back to being a 20-10 guy.  Whoopy do.  His 20-10 did nothing for the team and it won't do much for the Pacers.  He's not a winner.  He's got some skills and the body, he gets his numbers and got paid.  There's no motivation.  If he didn't get it under Nellie, why will he find it in Carlisle.  Sure, I'd take him halfway through the draft for my fantasy team if he's healthy, but I sure don't want him on my regular team.

by walkerp on Jan 17, 2007 5:58 PM PST reply actions

Nobody seems to have seen that we
found a replacement for Ike,

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/1/17/131416/963#commenttop

Again in the D-league, but Ike was not going to get to play under Don Nelson all that much anyway.

We are taking a risk with Jackson yeah, it was discussed by Fitz on the radio show this afternoon:
-
"Is this guy psychotic crazy?! A locker room cancer?"
-
I find nothing wrong with someone vowing to never forgive him for going into the stands and throwing punches. And in my opinion we should find a way to ship him out of here quickly. He isn't worth any trouble to chemistry, diobeying the coach, and his  in court appearances getting in the way of the games played, and like someone mentioned, is in the downward arc of his career.

Who knows if he was a stipulation on the part of Indiana in order to make the deal for Harrington(whom the Warriors have wanted since the last offseason.) Just like Ike seems to be their stipulation to making the deal by all reports.

by back2back51s on Jan 17, 2007 6:12 PM PST reply actions

Reason to rejoice, but not necessarily celebrate
I know you guys are very excited about this trade, but a) this is no rape and b) there is reason to be weary.
  1. This really was a good move for both teams. Around the NBA, I've been telling you that Dun and Murph are respected for what they can do. Murphy will thrive - yea, I said it - under Carlisle's offense. If Ike plays as well as he is capable of and up to his potential, this may be one of those trades Warrior fans regret.
  2. Stephen Jackson is a notorious cancer to every team he has been a part of. For a young and impressionable team, that is not a good thing at all. However, Nellie should be able to control him, I guess, and next time in the locker room (February 11), I'll see how things are going for the Dubs as far as chemistry goes.
All I am saying is that the deal was good for both teams. Dun and Murph struggled in the system Nellie was running, but will be better in the half court set the Pacers will be running. I kept telling you guys that the league had interest in these guys and there is reason for it. GMs are not as dumb as you think.

This trade right now is slightly in the Warriors favor, but if Ike becomes a player, the long contracts the Pacers took on will be worth it. I spoke with a source in Chicago and he was very clear about one thing - the Pacers will be better after this trade because of addition by subtraction. If Jackson can keep his head on straight, the Warriors will be okay - he just said that it is a big if.

I guess, my main point is to be happy, but curb that with understanding that Harrington and Jackson are traditionally not team players. Te hope for both of these teams is that the change in scenery will spark their games.

In my opinion, this was good for both teams. The Warriors traded fundamentals for athleticism, which suits their style. The Pacers did the opposite, trading athletes for regimental players. Now, both teams can make healthy playoff pushes.

thats David Harrison, not Al Harrington.... The pic is from 12/4/2004 (I was at that game) and Harrington wasnt on the team then. You can tell it isnt Harrington because if you look on Harrison's arm, he had Jermain O'neals armband, because that happend right after the malice at the palace. It needs a thread, or I'm creating one. Don't put this game off just cause it's the last one I'll really like the Warriors in.

We certainly sent off some extra baggage
but I think we got some back in the form of Stephen Jackson who is in the decline of his career and has a severe attitude problem. If he doesn't respond to Nellie, the team could be in some trouble.

Playoffs
Remember that game in November when the Warriors were up 106-102 with 30 seconds to go? Harrington makes a 3, and then with a few seconds left, Baron unintentionally tips the ball to Stephen Jackson who hits a 3 to beat the Warriors 108-106.

How ironic would it be if we miss the playoffs by one game?

There could be no better trade
for the Warriors.  Nelson wants athletic bodies that want to run.  Murph, Dun and Diogu were not going anywhere with this team.  This is undeniable.  Does anyone care that we can sign Ellis and Biedrins long term because of this trade.  Add Sarunus, a proven winner that can defend, nail the 3 and shoots 92% from the charity stripe.  I'll take Jackson and Artest in order to get rid of Dun and Murph.

Amen..
"I'll take Jackson and Artest in order to get rid of Dun and Murph."

Amen brother! Before this trade was there ANYONE out there (well i guess besides pree's sources) that thought a team would take on Dunlittle and his ridiculous contract?? I sure as heck didn't. This alone makes it worth it. The W's were saddled with 5 more years of paying a bench player like a star. Now at least they are paying real NBA starters.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Sarunas Jasikevicius!!! Oh yeah!
I've seen this guy play a bit here in Spain. He played well for Barcelona and then was a leader with the euro-giants Macabi Tel-Aviv. He is the floor genearal of the Lithuanian national teamed (coached by Donnie Jr). He is just the perfect type of Nellie player. A real hard-nosed workman like point guard that can dish and shoot really well. He's a bit slow of foot at times, but will be the much needed insurance against anything happening to Baron. I really am excited to see how he might team up with Monta, allowing Monta to play more SG for the next two seasons and to grow into the role at a more natural pace. Good move, everyone should love the second-coming of Sarunas.
