Recap: Warriors 110, Nets 109 - The Shot Heard 'Round the World.
WOW!!!
I've been waiting all year for a game like that!! I would never say this without Monta's buzzer beater of course but that was the game of the year. No Warriors fan should have missed out on that feeling when Monta drained that last second jumper.
Me? I threw my sandwich into the air and danced around in a rainfall of lettuce, tomato, turkey, cheese, and drizzles of balsamic Italian dressing. And I saw that it was good. How did you respond to the shot heard around the Bay?
Damn... I'm speechless. Speechless.
That being said, let me throw some words down.
"Yea hand that over real quick. Let me show you something..."
I almost don't want to tarnish that feeling that we all have inside right now but tonight's game was pretty worrisome. After losing 6 of our past 7, it was initially refreshing to step into the Arena tonight against a team that we all thought we were going to easily put away.
It didn't quite go down like that, however. The first quarter was abysmal. Letting the Nets go back to their bench with a 16 point lead wasn't exactly my idea of "putting them away". Again, we faced one of the two classic Warrior examples in this game.
Classic Warrior Example #1: Falling viciously behind in the first quarter, then playing the basketball that we should have been playing all along to play catch-up.
Classic Warrior Example #2: Playing nasty basketball in the first half that gets Warrior Nation on their feet, then giving up the game with a mediocre 3rd and a dismal 4th.
It seemed as though we were doomed.
In the second quarter, however, the Dubs started to wake up. Now even though we outscored the Nets in every quarter after that, I was honestly nervous throughout the entire game. Nets take the lead, we catch up and tie. Nets take the lead; we catch up and take the lead by 3. Nets take the lead, we catch up and tie. The entire game we were forced to play at their pace!
But then it happened. Like so many times before, we hung our heads. Like so many times before we asked ourselves how we blew it, AGAIN. Were we doomed? Were we cursed?! Were we... hey... Monta has an open look! HOW MUCH TIME IS LEFT ON THE CLOCK?!!!! IT'S UP!! IT'S...
Gentleman... meet the turning point of the season.
Eat that Probability Tracker.
Warrior Wonder I don't even have to say his name. If you don't know who it is, you just missed a hell of a game.
Update 12:11am 1/25/07 (Atma Brother #1):
In case you missed it...
The Shot...

And The Celebration!

But most importantly- Raphael, Michaelangelo, Leonardo, or Donatello?

Nope- Al Harrington is the kids' favorite TMNT!

I love you man!
Funny FACT: on warriors.com, under the tab for the main news articles, it says "wednesday defeat" instead of "wednesday win" HAHAHA... even warriors.com thought we were gonna lose, and they never changed it after the game ended and they added the headline hahaha
But I agree, turning point of the season, 1 game from 8th place, here we go!!!

Endgame
Tonight, I was literally jumping, clapping and screaming around the same room. Something had compelled me to tune back in with 5 minutes remaining, after turning the game off following a gruesome 1st quarter. There I was, like a child with his hands over his eyes, peaking through the slits between my fingers. Wouldn't you know it, something amazing happened, something that rarely happens to the Warriors that I know.
He's hoping that lady luck stays around for awhile, sure makes the watching alot more rewarding.

Let's not cover up the horrendous play
PG Davis
SG Jackson
SF Barnes/Pietrus (depending on who played better the game before)
PF Harrington
C Biedrins
with Richardson working his way back in to the starting line-up replacing Jax as soon as he recovers from the broken hand. Ellis of course would be the 6th man off the bench and when J-Rich comes back Jax could be the 7th... now that's a deeeeeep team. On a side note... who else wants to see J-Rich shoot a lefty free throw on his first game back? I can't wait!!!

At any rate, I'll agree with you. They were cold from beyond the ark. Any time they can take a game shooting 5-26 deep. Sheeeeeit. Gotta take those wins.

With a grain of salt
Anyways its great to get a W after we dropped 6 of our last 7. We shot terribly from the arc tonight 19 percent... I miss JR!!!
We didnt get killed on the boards so that was a big factor in this game. But let's see if they can consistently come out everynight and crash the boards with some authority.
We totally stole this game from the nets and I'LL TAKE IT!

This win feels better than most
I was at the game, too, and the majority of the crowd was great. There were those that still walked out when we were down with about 4 minutes to go.
I was at the Cleveland game, too. One thing I noticed was how the Cleveland bench was out of their seats and cheering on their team when they went on their final quarter run. Ronaldo Major of all people was the only one on the edge of his seat when we needed something like that. Tonight's game was different. When Sarunas went out due to foul trouble, he remained standing for a good portion of, not only the quarter, but the remainder of the game. He yelled out and encouraged the team. It became infectious towards the end of the game as the rest of the bench got up, too. That's something that we need and I hope we see more of it down the line whether we're winning or losing.

Wow.
When Bostjan Nachbar threw up that 3, I held my breath. Then Baron dribbled it up .. gave it to Monta, and held my breath again. Then when I saw it fall through .. it took me a while to regain my breath.
Its games like these that make me glad I'm a Warriors fan.

BIG GAME
At first I thought we were going to make another trade, but now I don't think so any more. With this many wing guys, Nellie can literally pressure the ball and run freely all day. That pressure defense really makes all the difference and the turnovers we are causing are ridiculous. This team, onces gelled, is going to be unique in its ability to play pressure defense and then run after.

Feeling Euphoric But We Can Still Play Better
Like Hash mentioned in this post, there were some issues that should be of concern for our Dubs. That first quarter was rather disconcerting. The Warriors came out WITHOUT the foot on the gas pedal, mirroring their play from the fourth quarter of the Lakers game by giving up 36 points in the first quarter while scoring 20. The Dubs can ill afford to come out of the gate waiting for something to happen; they have to take charge of the game and set the tone from the start while maintaining that level of play for 48 minutes. Young teams have a hard time doing this, but at some point or another you're going to have put your nose to the grind and just do it.
The first quarter was very illuminating. It showed me that Sarunas Jasikevicius should not be in the starting lineup. He, like Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, and Josh Powell, need to get acclimated to Coach Don Nelson's system. To Nelson's credit, he has simplified the offense for the new players, and you need time to learn the tendencies of your new teammates while knowing where to go on the court; therefore, I can give the new players a pass on offense.
The only offensive criticism I have is that the Warriors need to run at every single opportunity, and part of that entails your ballhandlers pushing and throwing the ball up ahead. It is imperative that Sarunas do this every single time down the court. The other part of running is on the defensive end. For everything Sarunas brings to the Warriors, there are some deficiencies in his game. Those deficiencies include his lack of speed, quickness, and athleticism. Consequently, as an opposing player, you can attack Sarunas. If you are trying to get out and run to force tempo, you have to set the tone on the defensive end first and foremost. I don't think Sarunas' defensive play leads to good offense.
Jason Richardson said on the telecast that the Warriors needed to turn up the defensive intensity, and as soon as Mickael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, and Monta Ellis were inserted into the game, the Warriors were able to turn up the D which brought them back into the game toward the end of the first half. It doesn't take very long for Coach Nelson to see what works and what doesn't work. Hopefully, after the Nets game, he'll see that Sarunas doesn't belong in the starting line up. He's a guy who can come off the bench and give you a different look with his perimeter shooting. You can also use him down the stretch in close games to hit free throws if opposing teams are in a situation where they need to foul. But relying on Sarunas to start, and set the tone is definitely not going to work.
I consider myself to be a basketball purist, meaning I prefer to confront other teams head on, 1 on 1. I prefer playing a man defense over a zone. However, I understand that in certain games you have to use some tact when deciding to play a certain team. So it came to my surpise when Coach Nelson decided to go to a zone against the Nets. Nelson's 2-3 zone is used to prevent from getting pounded in the post. So if you're going against a post oriented team like the Rockets, Spurs, or Pacers who we'll be playing in February, it is certainly warranted to play in a zone. All you have to do is be aware of where the shooters are. Without Kristic in New Jersey's line up for the game, the Nets were without a viable low post option, so it was puzzling to me why Nellie went with the zone at different points of the game.
One of the drawbacks with playing the zone is it leaves so many open perimeter shots and the Nets proved last night that they could knock them down. The Nets shot 44% from 3-point range and 51% overall. With all of that said, this was an amazing win for our Dubs. If you come out with a win over a team that shoots that well and a team that puts up that many points on the scoreboard, that means that you have an incredible amount of intestinal forititude.
The Warriors played with a tremendous amount of heart. They were able to crash the glass, pulling down 11 offensive rebounds to the Nets' 6 offensive rebounds. Our Dubs got to the free throw line 35 times and shot 77% from the charity stripe compared to the Nets getting to the line 25 times and shooting 72%. There was a huge disparity in the points in the paint department. The Warriors scored 58 points to the Nets 32. These stats are an indication of the Warriors' hustle and aggressiveness. This is what won the game for them. If Golden State shot a higher percentage from 3-point range, this game easily could have been won by 8 or 10 points.
I loved the call at the end of the game to not call timeout. First of all, some solid defense got the Nets scrambling and forced them to shoot a contested perimeter shot. And what about that great rebound from Baron Davis? Because Andris Biedrins was so intent on boxing his man out, he couldn't rebound that ball. But by the same token, because of the great box out, Baron had a clear lane to go for the ball, and boy did he come out of nowhere to haul it in. It was a great call to not call timeout. By calling timeout, The Dubs would have allowed the Nets to get their defense set and probably would not have gotten up a good shot. The Warriors are at their best in the open court when the defense is not set, even if it happens to be the last play of the game. Monta was able to get a good look and knock that shot down.
Now, I'm not going to compare anyone to Michael Jordan, the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), but Monta's game winning shot from the left wing could turn out to be similar to Jordan's game winning UNC shot from the left wing not in terms of the importance of the two games, but in terms of using that as a building block. Jordan credits his game winning shot against Georgetown as the defining moment that gave him all the confidence to be the great player that he would eventually become. He knew right then and there that he belonged on the basketball stage. Hopefully, Monta Ellis can view his game winning shot in the same way and gain some confidence that would propel him into being a great player for us down the road.
As far as the team goes, The Warriors needed a shot in the arm to get going. With the Bobcats coming to town, there's no reason why the Warriors should not look to run them out of the building and gain some momentum before their 6 game roadtrip. Hopefully, we can draw from this win and build upon it.

Good game yet...
Fortunately the Warriors got bailed out by Ellis, (whom I hope is going to the sophomore/rookie game.) Games like these are going to happen occasionally, I just pray that it doesn't happen too often (or at least if it does happen, the Warriors win out.)
And I think the trade is working out well for both sides thus so far, but it's still early.

Tim Kawakami on the Game
Also, before I forget- when the game seemed it was over for the Warriors near the end of the 4th and they were down by a bunch, BD started smiling and joking. I was watching on TV thinking- what the?! Why's Baron smiling? This is going to be a terrible loss at home.
But then the Warriors went on a crazy run and you know the rest.
There was a good reason that he was smiling. He saw something that I don't think any of us saw watching the game. Props to him and the rest of the fellas for coming through in the clutch after a frustrating 3 quarters.
Made my day!
