Recap: Warriors 105, Suns 128 - Optimism, meet pessimism!
There was very little out there to convince me to not just write the word "Ugh" for this recap with a link to the Box Score, but I felt that it would be a cop-out recap. So, painful as it may be, let's break this game down and figure out what went wrong.
Again.
Excellent! Haven't had some Funleavy Foto Fun in a while!
Okay, maybe I'm being a little harsh. As wildly optimistic as I am about the Warriors, I am not totally shocked to see an outcome like this playing the Suns on their home court. Truth be told, I've been more surprised at the outcomes of our previous games against the Suns being so close. I mean this as no discredit to the Warriors, but rather as a testament to the powerhouse that is Phoenix this season. They are among the elite, and tonight we suffered their wrath.
Could we have beat Phoenix? Of course! But we would have needed to all of our powers in full force at the same time. That just didn't happen tonight. First off, Baron's minutes were justifiably reduced for this game. He's been shouldering the load for quite some time now and I think it was a wise move on Nellie's behalf to give the man a little rest. Having Monta probably didn't hurt the decision either.
Speaking of Monta, it's great to see him approaching full health again, but did he have to dip his hands in Crisco before the game? Nine turnovers ain't pretty kid. Hold on to that rock!
Next time use a spoon Monta!
Unfortunately, Barnes wasn't having one of his nights. It's been said before that Barnes is a monster out there; he just isn't at a point where he is consistent yet. We could have used his juiced up version tonight, but instead we got docile mode.
There were decent showings tonight from MP2, Beidrins (nice boards!), Diogu, Dunleavy and Kabuki tonight. The supporting cast was somewhat in the game tonight, but most of their stats came during garbage time (3rd and 4th quarter). Wait did I say garbage time? I meant sewage time. It's tough to deny that Kabuki's got game. I'm looking forward to seeing more from him.
We got outplayed tonight. There's no two ways about it. Welcome back to the wonderful world of .500.
Warrior Wonder: Hell let's give it to the new kid! Welcome aboard Kabuki!

Baron
James Jones and Leandro Barbosa blew up the game in the 2nd and 3rd, pushing it out of reach.
But that's what Pheonix has, depth. Options. Consistent shooters. Steve Nash.
Barnett and Fitzgerald mentioned it, that GSW can grow up to be Pheonix one day, as an example of the uptempo style at full bore, but they're not there yet.
Also ditto with the Azubuike nod. 7-7 FT's(Watchout McCleod!) a couple steals, nice moves in the lane with 2 defenders on him.
He's going to make the trade deadline and offseason interesting with Pietrus-AB-Monta-Barnes-etc. and who the Warriors are going to manage to keep around.

Ugly Game, but GREAT Pics

Dunleavy and Murphy should NEVER be on the floor at the same time

No really. They should NEVER be on the floor at the same time.

Dunleavy had a poor night, but you have to give him credit for this stylish layup.
What's funny about this pic? The caption: "Steve Nash #13 of the Phoenix Suns shakes hands with Adonal Foyle #31 of the Golden State Warriors before their NBA game played on January 7, 2007." I know both Foyle and Dunleavy both aren't the best players, but I didn't realize they looked so similar.

The refs were costing tonight and Nellie let them know.
I'll drop some game thoughts tomorrow, but after a frustrating loss this keeps things light.

Now that pic sums up the game nicely
Now here's a stat I didn't know: the last 7 times the W's have played at Phoenix, they've been on a back end of a back to back, while the Suns were on the back end at the same time just once.
Can't expect to win many of those.

Dun has armpit defense?
On the wrong caption, they sorta mess things up a bit over there at NBA.com. They had the Blazers beating the Sonics rather than the Kings. Nice attempt to try to hide our embarrassing loss NBA.com!

really?
Nash just does what it takes to win. If they needed someone to hit some key shots at the end of the game is there any doubt that he would have or found the right guy? The guy is simply amazing. As much as I think Baron is a nice player Nash is simply Hall of Fame type. The diff is so clear

Yes, really
Taking Baron out in the middle of the second quarter was an unfortunate move for momentum as it left Barnes and Ellis to fill in the offense - they didn't do as well as they have recently. Who knew. Still, the Warriors were playing with energy against a top notch team and there is always hope when guys come out to play.

If the game was closer
What was weird with Baron was how they keep trying to post him up on Marion
I know his hand was hurt so that may have contibuted but Baron had a subpar game and was having some trouble out there

If the game was closer
I thought they had a cjance as well watching them until that last few minutes of the first half

Agreed
I know his hand was hurt so that may have contibuted but Baron had a subpar game and was having some trouble out there
Very true. I didn't understand that move. Marion's a stellar defender. The Suns always ask him to do a TON on the defensive end. You'll see him guard JRich, Baron, Tim Duncan, and Lamar Odom.

Crucial stats of the game
KAzu though.. I look forward to seeing what he can continue to bring to the table. It's funny how he already seems more effective than Dunleavy, even if the stats don't show it. For one, he's definitely a better man defender.

Here's a thought.

If you take a look out of your windows, you can now see Dallas, TX. Quite the site, no?

Quickies
- The ball movement last night was nonexistent. 25 turnovers to 10 assists. U-G-L-Y.
- Props to Baron Davis for playing with two injured wrists and continuing to play hard with all these heavy minutes. He played like a slasher and drove to hole very effectively and rarely settled for jumpers. He played off guard most of last night (probably Nellie's idea to maximize his production with the injuries and to avoid fatigue), so the top point guard play wasn't there.
- I've been campaigning to see what Ike and Andris can do together out on the court, but Nellie picked the wrong times in the game to try it out. Ike and Andris couldn't run out and guard 3pt shooters like Jones and Barbosa. Still, I hope he doesn't give up on this look against other teams.
- Monta is NOT a point guard and he'll probably never be. I love watching the kid glide to the bucket and his 22 points were a pleasure to watch, but those points are negated with the awful decision making and lazy passes (use 2 hands please!). It will be interesting to see how long Nellie keeps experimenting with Monta at the PG spot, because he's killing the team with the unforced turnovers. He's did more bad than good last night. 9 turnovers- GOOD LORD!
- Barnes is coming back down to earth with his shooting. Let's hope he can pick it up next time. The Warriors need his scoring and deep shooting.
- It's getting embarrassing every time the opposing team throws out their shortest players and weakest defenders to guard Mike Dunleavy. If this guy was as smart as some people say, don't you think he'd realize this and work on his high/ low post game? He couldn't post up Steve Nash or Barbosa. Have some pride Mike. Other teams don't respect him or his height. They guard him as he's 6 feet tall.
- I'm seeing big thangs in the future from Azubuike. Kabuki!
- Troy needs to go and by all accounts wants to leave town on the first ticket out, but who's going to take him if he keeps playing this poorly?
- Biedrins did an excellent job on the glass, but his lack of low post scoring moves or jumpshot is beginning to show. Two words: Marcus Camby.
- Memo to the Warriors: the Suns can hit 3pt shooters. The Suns got so many great looks because the Warriors' rotations were 2 steps to slow.
- MYTH: The Suns play small ball. The Suns DO NOT play small ball. You'll be hard pressed to find a better, bigger, and more skilled frontline than Marion, Amare, and Diaw. The Warriors will never be "Suns Lite" with their current bigs. Also, the Warriors will never come close to the Suns with their poor shooting and lack of distributors (only Baron) on this squad. I'm still hoping for some trades.

don't expect anything better than that this season
You can't be a warriors fan if you worry about wins, we're here for the drama. The warriors are like a long running soap opera where we watch it just because it's there. Will bukaki stick? What part of Baron will explode next? Will tay move mom to the yay area? (good looking woman by the way). Will barnett be our next coach and teach the player how to win with vocabulary? As the warriors world turns.

hey Urquell
Anyway, Bukake so far has shown he's got what it takes to be a key role player on any NBA team, and perhaps spot-start.
