OPEN THREAD: Preseason Game #4 - Warriors vs Zalgiris Kaunas

Warriors (W-L): 2-1 (preseason)

Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania)

Time: 7:30PM PST (no radio or tv)

No radio or tv for the game tonight?! We're facing a team that has won 14 Lithuanian League titles and is run by none other than Arvydas Sabonis. I always liked Arvydas when he was with the Blazers. He had that big 'ol noggin and could do some things you just don't expect a big man could do.

Since the game is not on tv or radio, I'll be at the game scopin out our squad. This will be the first back to back the Warriors play this year so I'm expecting quite a heavy dose of Pat Burke and Tierre Brown and not so much of the players who might actually be playing on GSoM Night.

Predictions

UPDATE [Atma Brother #1]: Live Box Score from NBA.com

Haha
Hopefully they won't be breaking out the bathrobes on us tonight...

Must be a lithuanian tradition

Awesome
I love the dudes (coaches?) on the left, wearing bathrobes over their suits. Classy stuff right there.

Re: Sabonis: one of my favorite players ever. He looked like an upright cow on the court, and yet he was so skilled and effective in what he did. I would have loved to watch him in his pre-NBA prime.

is that Jasi
second from the bottom? lol. I hope we kill them because of Jasi's off-season comments.

I'll be at the game tonight
My night will be made if I can see Arvydas.  What compacity does he have in regards to the team?  Owner, partner, dish master?  I'd love to know.  He was the man when he was playing...

I completely forgot about Sabonis
Shame on me. I remember Barnett saying something along the lines of "he could have been greater than Jordan if he came to the NBA earlier." Anyway, here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrLxl0NxZGU

Gonna get my first dose of warrior action this year!

Sabonis was the real deal
He was so sweet, even at the end of his career.  His touch in passing by a center was unmatched in the past thirty years (did not see Walton that much).  His shooting touch was also so soft, he had hooks and standstill set shots; just pretty.

Sadly, he was wasted.  He had to play with the worst crowd of teammates imaginable, the forerunners to the Jailblazers, what I called the Knuckleheads.  They were so talented, but also ballhogs; Rasheed, Stoudamire, Bonzi, Rueben Patterson, Zach Randolph.  I felt so sorry watch him play with those clowns and thinking he'd be perfect for the Jazz or Suns or Bulls (triangle offense).

Nothing better than "The City".

win by 12?
more like win by 36

LOL
If this was a real game of Warriors vs Zalgiris, I'd agree. But since a lot of the players will be playing to not get injured, I expect the score differential to be low.

And do you really care about the point prediction in a meaningless game?

Quarterly report
Well, we learned a lot in the 1st:
  • Baron can school Lithuanians (11 pts, 5-6 fg, 3 dimes, 2 stl).
  • The Ws suck at rebounding, even against Lithuanians (20-11).
  • Kosta actually exists.

MEANINGLESS
I think this game is completly meaningless. Other preseason games against NBA teams are not meaningless (just the final score) because you can give PT to the rookies and see how the square off against NBA players, you can see what the new guys can do... but this game is just completly, totally meaningless, and we are still being OWNED on the glass by a Lithuanian team... great!!
F**K REFS!!!

Halftime report
  • The Warriors are terrible at rebounding and shooting.
  • Belinelli and Wright are both terrible, though you can't be as sure with Wright since Nellie only lets him play 47 seconds at a time.
  • We're still pretty good at forcing turnovers.
Americans lead, 53-39.

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 15, 2007 8:47 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

forward
I'm convinced that the limit to our success will be our forward tandem.

If Jackson and Harrington decide to be low FG% scorers, then we are a lottery team.

Belinelli's spectacular shooting is also becoming a smaller and smaller speck in the rear view mirror. It would have been nice to see him at least put up a couple games shooting 40%...from the field, not from 3. 1 of 6 is ugly man.

Questions? Complaints?

at least
their FT shooting continues to be good and Harrington is rebounding.

oy, the 3 rooks played 40 min and produced 5 pts, 2 rebs, & 1 asst.

can't believe we're getting pounded on the boards when there biggest guy is a 34 yr old who at 7'2", 218 lbs. so he's basically skinnier than Jax.

And a blown-out knee
Hooray.

Good thing the Fathead's giving Baron some invaluable game-time experience while letting Brandan Wright rest up for the regular season...

3rd quarter report
  • Marco feeling the range: now 13 points on 5-12 floor
  • Dubs rebounding much better now: Barnes and Harrington with a combined 17
  • Fathead still intent on giving PT to Pat "Fvcking" Burke and lettting Wright play three minutes at the end of every quarter.
87-56 good guys.

I get the feeling
burke's a monster in practice.
THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

by Tim N Chris Burger on Oct 15, 2007 9:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you do realize
wright actually played more minutes than burke. (not saying burke should get ANY playing time, just pointing that out)

by AJC3317 on Oct 15, 2007 11:13 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Uh, yeah
Unfortunately, I didn't have the necessary psychic powers to foresee that Wright would play the whole 4th quarter while Burke sat on the bench. I still think Burke's 12 minutes were 12 minutes too much. Looks like Wright shot bricks (2-11), but overall 7 pts, 7 boards in 19 minutes ain't bad.

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 15, 2007 11:52 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I seen Wright play today... (for the 1st time)
... was at the game Sleepy and I gotta say the guy needs a lotta work... he's got sloppy hands but the 2 dunks he had were monstrous and exciting- I found myself yelling out "OH SH!#!" infront of a bunch of kids... very exciting to see the beast in him... but he does need a lotta work... my 3 cents! Good times at the Roaracle tonight!

What we can use
from this game is the following (in my opinion)
10 rebounds for AL... sounds pretty good. He must have really got into shape this season
Belinelli, even sucking, shooting brick after brick, finished with 3 steals and 19 points
Barnes played well with 3 fouls (all in the first) and had 11 pts and 7 reb in 16 minutes
Stephen jackson had 20 points in 20 minutes
Baron almost had a Triple Double in 20 minutes
Tierre Brown is the only one who have a SLIMMMM chance of making the team (12 ponts and 4 ast)
F**K REFS!!!

by faetati on Oct 15, 2007 10:06 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the GSW
don't need a PG that can score.... just someone who can spell Baron for a little bit... if they really wanted a PG that could score they could have got that kid from the summer league team.  So they already got Troy Hudson, Monta is supposed to be working his way into PG, so I don't get where you think Tierre Brown will fit in except riding the bench where Sarunas used to be.

Besides, as most of commentators point out, they can always run a forward point if it gets really desperate.  Tierre Brown can GTFO right now.  One thing to take away from this game is that the warriors fans are split down the middle between how the team will do.  Them losing to the clippers last night w/o Brand was just sad... this euro team game doesn't mean anything.  If they come out and play well on Thursday against SA, then maybe some of you guys will relax a bit.

ha
my prediction was WAY closer than a "12 points"

by djchuckdeez on Oct 15, 2007 10:13 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes it would be slim
There is no room for Tierre. No room for Burke either, so i don't see the point in playing them so many minutes when we all know what the inevitable outcome will be.

burke and tierre
maybe the whole point to them getting so much PT is so that our backups don't play excess minutes and get injured.  it's preseason, nellie's main concern should be making sure nobody important gets injured

Game Last Night (10-15-07)
It was like going to a Jr. varsity game.  If you need an ego boost, play a Euro squad from a country that has a total population of 1,000,000 people.

BD looked like God. SJax and Al Harrington both looked like they are ready for the season.  Al was especially impressive with his shot and his desire to board like an animal-it showed!

With all the talk of B. Wright going down to the D League, I was shocked at how with it he was.  At first he was like a dear in the headlights, but after he got pushed around a little bit, he woke up and threw a couple down that in person looked great.  He blocked 2 shots and had a few buckets that had touch on them.  His agility is good for a tall guy and he can take the ball up the floor if absolutely needed.  B. Wright seems like a guy that if he gets some floor time, he will develop into a solid PF.  He needs to get adjusted to the banging down low and all the defensive movement in the NBA, but after he realizes that, he will do well.

Pat Burk is gone.  He sucks.  BD made some awesome passes to Burk and he dropped many of them and when he did catch a pass from BD, he would miss the bucket all while being 1 foot away from the hoop?!  He made BD look bad.  With that said, he's gone-no doubt.

Tierre Brown is also outta here.  He is very one dimensional and will have a home somewhere except here.  He is fast, agile and has some good instincts, but he does the same thing every time; slash to the hoop and dish out a pass to someone's feet or he slashes to the hoop and might make a circus shot lay up.  He is NBA ready, just not right here right now.  He's gone-no doubt.

POB looked ok.  He missed a lot of 1 foot shots and also missed a couple of dunks/lay ups that were too easy to miss.  He got pushed around slightly, but kinda like B. Wright, he woke up after getting beat up on a little and changed some shots, grabbed some boards and was very agile for a guy his size.  He and B. Wright played at the same time for a while and those two together made people rethink their shot selection due to their massively long arms.  I see POB staying while B. Wright works a little in the D league to be fully ready for the NBA.

Kosta to Kosta Perovic is really a work in progress.  First thing to come to mind is how slow and gangly he is.  He's very uncoordinated and is very soft.  It looked like he has premature arthritis because he can barely move.  POB and Wright are MUCH better than he is and I don't see Kosta doing anything anytime soon.  D league HAS to be in his very near future.

Belinelli looked okay.  He took a lot of shots and missed many of them.  The thing I liked though is that he never gave up and kept firing away.  Once he gets comfortable with the system and the NBA in general, look out because he has the tools to be a very good player.  He hustles, has extremely quick hands, has good hoops IQ, he and BD have THE best court awareness, his passing is wonderful and he has a nice shot not to mention he will board up too.  Beli will be a great bench player-great I say.

Last we have the surprise of the season-BUIKE!  He is the real deal folks.  He had a series where he blocked a shot, got the outlet pass started, ran the wing, received the pass from Belinelli and drained an 18 foot jumpshot on the baseline.  WOW is all I can say.  He has worked his ass off and it really shows.  It's amazing how polished he looks and he defiantly HAS TO BE our SG thus far.  He boards like a beast, blocks shots, runs the floor and can slam it on someone's head or drain an outside shot.  I love this guy!

12 Man Roster:

BD
Buike
Belinelli
Monta
THUD
SJax
Barnes
MP2
Harrington
Andris
POB
Croshere

15 Man Includes:

Lasme
Perovic
B. Wright

wright and harrington
Anyone remember what sorta shots they were taking?

Was Al missing point blank like last year, or just jumper-happy but not falling?

How on earth did Wright miss so many shots? He's a 60% shooter! Was he away from the bucket or getting his stuff swatted

Questions? Complaints?

Nice Reporting Guys
Feel like I was kind of there.  I'm really looking forward to the 30th!!

I've never even looked at preseason games before; wow.

The rebounding is a killer but they are who they are and they are not going to outrebound anybody.

Nothing better than "The City".

Wright and Harrington
Wright missed I think 3 point blank layins off screens and missed a couple of putbacks.  He did get swatted hard core by some Lithuanian guy, but the next series down he threw one down lefty style that got everyone outta their seats.  All in all, he needs more PT to get a little better touch.

Same exact thing with Big Al.  He kept missing layups off of screens, layups on fast breaks and tip ins.  The only shots he made were from 18 feet and in-they looked great though.  All in all, Al's shots from 1 feet away were too soft.  He needs to put a little more touch and he'll be fine.  He, BD and SJax were the most impressive of the night.
