GSoM Fantasy Hoops is Back!

Last year's prize
We're back for another season in the GSoM Fantasy Hoops League. There are only about 10 days left until the start of the regular season, so you better hurry up and get your team. There are 2 seasons per NBA season. It's broken up into 2 parts, pre and post All-Star break. The league is a salary cap league so everyone has access to the same players. Just pick 6 guys, 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center, and 1 6th man. The total of their salaries has to be below $35 million. Over the course of the season, player salaries will go up and down daily depending on the demand for their services. Players that play a lot of games per week or are underpaid according to their performance are usually players that jump in value. With the change in salaries, your salary cap will also go up and down, hopefully only up. With a salary cap league, any number of people can join and that's why this is fun. Every single member of the GSoM community can take part and compete.
There's one major changes this year from last year. You cannot buy trades, the league just won't let you. I've created a "basic" league which does not allow people to buy trades. You can only use the 2 trades per week that the Sporting News gives you. This will cut down on any cheating that went on last year where people might have bought trades creating an unfair advantage. So this year, all you get is the 2 free trades per week and that's it. The rest of the time, you have to use your fantasy smarts to win.
You must have a Sporting News account to participate. Once you have that, just join the league, enter your team name as your screen name here, fill out your roster, and prepare to get beat down by me.
Sign up, join in on the fun, and let the trash talk begin.

Also, does your 6th man score points for you during the season or does he have to be starting?

To your questions:
- Ah yes, the big "games played v. high value" question. Basically, yes, it helps to pick guys that are playing a bunch of games in the upcoming week, but you have to balance that with other concerns, like (a) the upcoming several weeks; (b) increasing your overall team value; and (c) conserving a few trades in case of emergency (injury, for example).
- Your 6th man scores points for you just like the starters do. Whether you make LeBron James your starting forward and Stephane Lasme your 6th man, or vice-versa, is basically arbitrary.
Now I have a question for the teacher: assuming I decide to play this year -- yeah, I know I said I would boycott, but since you found a way to prevent cheating I may reconsider -- how do I sign up? When I input my old name and the old password ("GSoM," right?) it doesn't remember me. Do I need to open a new TSN account?
P.S. -- FJ, I'm still waiting for my gold trophy. Both of them. ;-)

As far as logging into TSN, I don't know what your old user name and password are. There should be tools on the site to reset your password ("Forgot password" link) or to help you remember your user name. If neither of those help, you'll have to create a new account.
As far as cheating, I can't guarantee that there won't be cheating because we've never done the basic league before, but as far as I can tell, nobody will be able to buy extra trades.
Also, we would love to have you back so we can knock off the master. Hopefully it's not too easy for you.

Thanx
After that, of course, I couldn't resist checking the prices of the various players, and cobbling together a "trial team"... which I guess means I'm now officially participating.
Luckily for you guys, I'm starting a new job in December, so I won't have nearly as much time as last year to hunt for the perfect bargain bin specials every week. That should give you all a sporting chance. Also, I'm going to try as much as possible to pick only guys I like -- so no acquiring of guys like Steve Franchise, Kobe, or Devin Harris, even if the situation warrants it.
Without revealing my exact picks for my opening day starting lineup, I will say that Zorgon would likely approve...

Because
I do like how people are starting up Yahoo fantasy leagues on their own. It's great to see the community taking initiative to start up these leagues.

3 Questions
- Does it matter which guards/forwards you get - Are you allowed to get two SFs or two PGs or do you have to get 1 PG, 1 SG, 1 PF and 1 SF?
- Are there any prizes up for grabs this year?(well done for winning last year's Sleepy)
- Does the league finish in mid-season with another one starting then or is there one through the whole season?

- It doesn't matter. You can start Nash/Baron as your guard tandem, or Kobe/Wade. The TSN point tallying machine doesn't care whether your team would have any real-world chemistry. Personally, I usually tried to field a team that would also be pretty good in the real world, but that's just me.
- Ask FJ
- Two totally separate seasons -- so theoretically you could amass the most overall points over the course of the season and win nothing. :-(

Points only
Having a valuable team in terms of $$$ only helps you inasmuch as it allows you to buy guys who can rack up points. Quite often the league leader in $$$ value isn't the leader in points. That's actually a good thing to keep in mind: RACK UP THE TSN POINTS.
FT% is a small but not insignificant part of a players ability to rack up points. Missed FTs can be a killer, since each one subtracts a full point. If Josh Smith and Dwight Howard were 90% FT shooters, they'd probably be Top 3 Fantasy players.

Prizes?
The prize will just be going to me anyways. Put it this way, if you're doing it for the prize, you're not going to win anyways. I'll speak with Atma about this and see what kind of prize(s) we can get together.
Good luck this season.
