OPEN THREAD: Preseason Game #6 - Warriors vs. Sonics

Warriors (W-L): 3-2 (preseason)

Sonics (W-L): 1-4

Time: 7:00 PM PST (KNBR 1050)

Warriors. Meet Kevin Durant. Durant, meet the Golden State Warriors. Excellent. Now you boys play nicely!

Well after 2 preseason losses in a row to the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Snores, the Dubs are headed to Seattle to face the Kevin Durant. Apparently the rest of the Sonics are showing up as well but no one really cares.

Since the game is totally meaningless (getting sick of that yet?) and I wasted most of my creative juices today writing about getting whooped in Street Fighter II as a child, allow me to take some time to educate you all on some facts about the city of Seattle.

Fact #1: Seattle's official nickname is the "Emerald City," the result of a contest held in the early 1980s to designate a new nickname for the city. Shouldn't nicknames be earned? Holding a contest is like the kid in school who wanted to be cool so bad that he told people to call him "Slash". He usually ended up with any nickname but "Slash". And they weren't ones that he would have chosen.

Fact #2: Contrary to popular belief, the Space Needle is neither the tallest structure in Seattle nor is it in Downtown. This misconception results from the Space Needle often being photographed from Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill, where it is closer to the viewer than are the downtown skyscrapers. (see photo below)

Seattleview

FOOLS! Unfamiliar with Forced Perspective!

Predictions:

* Warriors by 7.
* Durant demands a trade to the Warriors.
* Belinelli drains 4 or more from downtown.

Man you really do learn something new on GSoM everyday. I've never been to Seattle, but with Hash's educational lesson I really don't feel the need anymore. Haha

And man what you talking about getting whipped in Street Fighter II as a child? If you were getting served, then damn I really was garbage at that game.

I went to Seattle
for the first time about a month back. Honestly, I've got to say that I, personally, think it's 10 times better than SF. Less crowded, seemed easier to get around, finding parking (and more importantly paying for parking) was infinitely easier. I also went to a Mariners game which was an awesome experience...although I am an A's fan.

None of this, of course, means the Supersonics are good.

Hang out in Seattle
between October and May and get back to me.  When the Sonics move to Oklahoma City it's going to be hell in the winter.

Seattle is Beautiful
A great looking city (I'm a SF native) in April - October.  Can really be dreary in the winter time with the rain though (and cold.)

I have cousins up there that I've visited over the years and everytime I go I fall in love with the area; its so clean.

Nothing better than "The City".

Same here
There are so many more trees there, not just in Seattle but in Washington in general.

I like sun
I've heard Seattle is amazing for about 6 weeks. Outside of that, don't expect to see anything above you other than gray clouds. Isn't the suicide rate in Seattle among the highest in the country?

by Fantasy Junkie on Oct 23, 2007 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I lived in seattle...
It's nothing like the bay, I thought it was from visiting in past summers.

I originally was going to post a negative rant about this city, but instead the one positive going for it is the bumbershoot festival. The most fun music/comedy/film festival I have ever experienced, totally one of the kind.

by tajbled on Oct 23, 2007 6:40 PM PDT reply actions

For some reason
I really just love a cloudy, cold, windy day. Rain is cool with it to, but I don't mind if its there or not. Maybe its because I live in Oklahoma City and it's sunny all of the time. I don't know, but Seattle sounds like an awesome place "weather-wise" for me....

Spent a couple days in Seattle
It felt like a smaller, fresher version of San Francisco with a lot less homelessness and a lot more cigarettes. Was talking recently to a Seattle native who just moved to Oakland, and she said that people in the Bay are a helluva lot nicer and more congenial than in Seattle.

Anyway, enough of this Seattle talk. Anybody listening to the game? Six boards for Beans in the first 6 minutes.

ok but...
My question remains... how is this guy going to stop TD? Boozer? Garnett? He´s got a lot of high and lows...today he´s scoring well but I still cant see this guy guarding bigger and stronger PFs... my opinion...
F**K REFS!!!

by faetati on Oct 23, 2007 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel you
but who ELSE is going to? Barnes? Harrington? Croshere? I mean, NOBODY can really defend TD, Boozer, or Garnett, but nobody on our roster can even come close. Might as well try to make a mismatch out of it that might also turn to our favor. For the record, I still like Barnes or Al better at the starting 4, though I can see what Nellie's thinking on the Al 6th-man plan.

Also: fouls are killing us tonight, so the points that Pietrus scored were, at the very least, negated by his fouling.

by ivanbe on Oct 23, 2007 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally agree with you
And also, basketball is not only a game of scoring... see the Spurs, they are a great defensive teams and are creating a dynasty... Defense wins games, offense is fun... I think the starting lineup should be:
PG - Baron Davis
SG - Kelenna Azubuike (or Marco Belinelli)
SF - Stephen Jackson (or Matt Barnes during his suspension)
PF - Al Harrington
C - Andris Biedrins
Pietrus should be behind Marco, Buike, Ellis, Barnes on the rotation...
F**K REFS!!!

by faetati on Oct 23, 2007 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Al Harrington
How about 4-6 FG, 8 points and 6 rebounds... the other day he had 14 rebounds (I know he missed 1500 shots...)... Hew said he worked hard during the offseason to make his body a "rebound machine", lost 20 pounds... I think he deserves to start at PF!

Your starting lineup was the one I was hoping for (along with most of us, probably). I trust Nellie though; he'll make adjustments pretty quickly if his idea doesn't work. That might be his strongest suit as a coach.

for you Monta bashers...
Ellis 6/11 with 8 TOs for 15 points in 33 minutes
Davis 4/14 with 6 TOs for 14 points in 31 minutes

Criminy, it was Ellis' first action in preseason! I think he had a pretty good game.

Minute for minute, Wright matched up well with Durant in the box score. Lasme with 2 blocks in 14 minutes. Bellinelli with a nice stat line. Looking forward to the season!

by warriorfaninlakerland on Oct 23, 2007 10:12 PM PDT reply actions

sheesh, don't be so sensitive
outside of scoring, monta had a bad game(which he's allowed, esp. coming off a serious injury). he was obviously rusty, seeing as how luke ridnour rejected him twice at the rim - that said, watson pretty much schooled him tonight - to the point that, outside of a few isolations, belinelli was running the team in the latter stages of the game.

and all ppl are saying is based on what we saw tonight (charges, bad one hand passes, getting picked by earl watson over & over again) it seems like monta's game hasn't improved from last yr. or, in other words, still a good player, just not all that much better than he was last yr.

just b/c ppl think he's the "same old monta" doesn't necessarily mean they think he sucks. just like "same old spurs" doesn't mean they suck.

by the evil monkey on Oct 23, 2007 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Fun game...
I just caught the last few minutes of the 4th and overtime but it had me sitting in my kitchen listening intently to my radio.

It was good to see the young guys getting some extended run together down the stretch. Yeah, there were some critical errors (Monta, Monta, Monta...) but that's what preseason is for. The kid is not going to learn how to play the point by reading books, he is going to learn by kicking himself in the a$$ all night after making mistakes in crunchtime. I don't know if he will ever be an NBA PG, but I'm glad to see that Nellie is going to push him into that role and see how he responds.

BWright sounded pretty good and Lasme had an important block when we needed a stop. Overall it was pretty fun for a radio only preseason game. lol.

.

by olympicmike on Oct 23, 2007 11:05 PM PDT reply actions

well, what do expect?
The kid knocks down the only 2 open mid range jumpers he saw.  If he can knock those down with any consistency, lightweight or not, that sounds like the perfect compliment to beidrins down low.  In this system, that is.

er...
actually it sounds more like nellie's talking about his work on the glass,
"He's got something special because he's so long and quick. He got to balls no one else on the team could have gotten."
that's what they ask wright about as well,
"When a shot goes up, you have to go to the boards. It's instincts and being able to use your athletic ability and quickness to get to the glass."

by the evil monkey on Oct 24, 2007 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

POB Back to Bakersfield?
After tonight's game, I wonder if our overhype of POB led to this eventual flounder of a performance. I'll be interested to see if POB gets sent back to D-League instead of our other rookies.

by crazyray on Oct 24, 2007 12:00 AM PDT reply actions

yeah
Kurt Thomas, Nick Collison, Chris Wilcox...it wasn't like the Sonics were trotting all-star bigs out there.

Would have been nice to see him use his fouls and actually get some boards, blocks, or steals...instead, fouling without doing anything else is just wasteful.

Problem is that we don't have another backup C on the roster.

Questions? Complaints?

no way he goes
It's one thing for a rookie top-10 pick to be sent to the D-League, its another for a second year player.  Especially when he plays your thinnest position.

POB needs time against NBA talent so he can learn the limits of fouling.  When he stays in games, we know he can block shots, score, and even make nice passes.  At this point sending him to the D-league won't help his progress.  Hopefully he can get to the point where it takes 5 minutes to get his first foul, and slowly build up from there.

5 minutes. sometimes, its a lot to ask for...

8 TOs is Troubling
Yes its his first game but its not like he's an established PG; he was shaky last year with the ball and made turnovers.  I really wish he had worked on this during the summer.  You can be rusty and not make 8 TOs in a week.

Wright is a player.  He can help but only in spurts.

POB will help this year.  He's learned and let's give him some time.

Nothing better than "The City".

Catfish after the game
Did anyone read the new training camp entry at the Dubs site? After the Sonics game, Jack had the post game meal for everyone be catered by Catfish Corner, a local catfish restaurant owned by Jack's relatives. Once again, this is a great example that shows why Jack is a good captain and an even better teammate. Although he didn't play tonight, he still mentored from the sidelines and provided food to boot! MMM Catfish and fried chicken ::drools::

Seattle's

One more reason
to love Azubuike:  in a quiet game, only ten points in 25 minutes, he nonetheless had zero fouls, zero turnovers, and zero missed free throws.
